The third salvo is only 69 missiles. Missile count: 838 + 100 + 69 = 1007

Our AMM-PD took out about 30 of them, and the Gauss PD shot all the rest down.

All of them.

A 100% kill rate.

So... is it time to send in the Gunships?

Or should we probe a bit more first?

As a fun exercise, remember AMM is a size 1 missile. These ASM missiles are size 12. Trading 300 missiles to take down 40 doesn't sound like a good deal until you realize that they could have build 40 x 12 size one missiles from basically the same resources. And our AMM is lower tech than theirs.

A more immediate way of looking at it is in terms of missile magazine storage space.

In a missile fight, each side only brings a certain number of re-loads immediately available in their magazines.

After those rounds are expended they must cease fire and (if possible) disengage.

Those 300 size-1 AMM anti-missiles represent 300 MSP worth of ready-ammunition magazine storage space.

The 40 enemy size-12 ASM missiles that they intercepted represent 480 MSP worth of ready-ammunition magazine storage space.

... and since we brought many more ships to the battle, we started with a lot more magazine storage space anyway.

So against the three salvos, our PD force scored:

Salvo #1 - 91% against 100 missiles.
Salvo #2 - 90% against 100 missiles.
Salvo #3 - 100% against 69 missiles.

Pretty effective PD.

The single penetration was both bad news (a direct hit on one of the ship's AMM missile magazines!) and good news (no magazine explosion).
How can there be a hit on the magazines without magazine Explosion?

The magazine itself didn't detonate.

Missile magazines, Engines and Power Plants can all explode when hit, causing extra damage. Sometimes hundreds of points.

Maybe. Or maybe not. There's a tech line that reduces the chance.

Yeah, but we had a nuclear explosion happen in the magazine containing high explosives...

Our magazines are made out of Unexplodium.

Salvo #4, of 14 missiles.

Missile count: 1021

Didn't see THAT coming.

This would either be the Deux-Sevres, or one of the Lot-et-Garonne.

All shot down by AMMs or Gauss PD.

Make sure the Phalanxes rejoin them but otherwise, sounds like time to pay them back to me.

If anything this episode shows why sheer volume of fire matters when it comes to penetrating missile defenses.
