Would that improve their opinion of us, or just make them stronger opponents later, thanks to our trade?

Hmmm, that seems a very Trumpian viewpoint.

Treaties give diplomatic points to both sides. More treaties more so.

It speeds up the path to more treaties (research sharing being the ultimate one) and it gives the other race money. Plus, of course, research once you hit the research sharing level.

As far as I know it gives them nothing else. No minerals, no trade in equipment, infrastructure, that sort of thing.. none of that.

Though when you're allies they can mine in our territory. That would count towards making them stronger.

So the first treaty would not really make them stronger. Their freighters would access our territory of course but so would ours.

OK... I didn't expect the SECOND one... but THIS one really surprised me.

Jerx showing up in three systems at once. Those guys are pests. I already lost count at 8 raids not kong before this point so even on page 202 we've been raided almost a dozen times..

I'm not sure which direction the trade has to flow in order to influence their opinion.

I would expect the most pessimistic outcome... that only THEIR trade with US will influence THEIR opinion.

That would be the most useless outcome (because they would already need to have had a high opinion of us in order to send trade in the first place)... so that's probably how it works.

EDIT: Well, I stand corrected on that point.

The Borks have given us a very bad deal with their trade. They won't accept our beautiful emu meatballs, because their meatballs are weak and lathered in a sauce that cannot stand up to our beautiful barbecue. They built all of those IKEAs to take advantage of us with their shoddy furniture. They are not sending the best furniture when they send us furniture. I would know, my uncle is a furniture salesman. And you know, I don't think our baby girls, our eleven year olds, need 30 Bork robot baby dolls.

On a more serious note, perhaps once our diplo relationship with them gets closer to the threshold, we should offer them a treaty and see their response. It might help us determine their feelings toward us. Also, do NPRs go from polite suggestions straight to war ever or will they always change to demands before doing it? Once a demand is made, do we need to be ready to pull everything out or will they be sated if they see us begin to slowly withdraw or is there any way to promise that we'll clear the system in a certain timeframe?

We're going to build a jump-point fortress, and it will be a BEAUTIFUL fortress, and we'll make the Bork pay for it!

Do they just spawn or is there a nest?

A correction:

Trade access means that the aliens can ship infrastructure to our colonies. So we can get some free infra out of that.
Of course infra already is basically free though.

Secondly, how big are our mining colonies in the ZNZ again? Can we ship those out?

NPRs will deduct points for any alien ships they detect on active sensors in systems in which they have a population. The deduction is equal to 10% of contact size. So a 5000-ton ship (size 100) would cause an instant 10 point deduction. For the purposes of this rule, they will ignore freighters if a trade treaty is in effect and they will ignore ships from Empires they class as Friendly or Allied.

I presume this also goes for the mining colonies in The ZNZ..

Do they just spawn or is there a nest?

They spawn. It's pretty random.

Their system can't be accessed by anybody else. So in that sense they just spawn.

We trade shots back and forth at nearly point-blank range, with the Jerx getting very much the worst of the exchange.

He's immobilized and we're hulling him witrh every hit.

Our civilian deaths are now up to 28,000 (out of a population of just under 4 million) but our defenses are still completely untouched.

One of those three raids, the most successful one to date I believe, was on Sirius

So the Battle of Sirius Business was a pretty serious business.

As it should be.

Sixteen wrecked Pirate ships, and a planet saved only by hanging on with our fingernails.

Epic.

Iconic for much of the gameplay up to that point, too.

I thought the Modrons were paying for the fortress?
There will be many YUGE, beautiful fortresses and all of the other races in the game will get their chance to pay for one or more :D

To the best of my knowledge, the Bork have no population in Ze Nootrahl Zoon-a. At all.

Which (if true) should mean no penalty.

I could send in a scout to check every object in the system. -[EDIT: an Intel vessel is heading there to check]

We have a Naval Base with 20,000 tons of military hardware, about a million tons of commercial hardware, and 600,000 pops plus a squadron of Sabres. There are eleven Grinders deployed in total, for about 1.2 million tons of mining gear.

If push came to shove we could simply hand it all over to the Bork. It sounds like a lot but it doesn't represent even a tenth of a percent of our strength.

Or we could send in a big fleet of Tugs to haul it all out.

More troops built. A new type of Sabre with a smaller gun but a jump drive has been laid down, with a few to be built for troop trials.

There are NO Bork pops in Ze Nootrahl Zoon-a.

I sent a Spy class Intel ship to inspect every body in the star system, a total of ten comets and one Mercury-like planet.

There are no Bork anywhere.

... so we shouldn't be harming relations much with our presence.
