Stats: 700mhz AMD processor
200something MB RAM
Ensonique sound card

Problem: Whenever I load up the game, it will play each sound JUST ONCE and then never again until I restart (music plays fine). I have DirectX 8 (let it install that for me), and plenty of all the specs. What could be the problem?

did you try the latest driver for your sound card? It could be the problem... If there is a mention of your sound card drivers in Add/Remove Programs in the control panel, use this function to uninstall it and re-install the newest version you download from the web.

also, try to disable the music to see if you get the same problem.

there's a new version of Direct X available, you might want to try it.

Sound prob.

I have the same problem, the music plays just for a small time and then just stops. All you hear then is... nothing. Well, if you do increase the volyme VERY much you hear some music, but with a low volyme. I HATE IT!

And I've got the newest drivers to all hardware stuff, plus for DirectX.

The music is in MP3 format, so let's try something that might work.

1- Disable the music in EU Settings
2- Load Winamp
3- Create a new list and then add the entire music directory (\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis 2\Music)
4- Play the music and start EU.
5- come back and tell me if it worked :)

I tried the latest drivers, but the sound still does not work (like I said, music WILL play all the time, but sfx is messed up).

I'm running Ensoniq AudioPCI, btw.

did you try do disable the music to see if the sounds would work?

Yes I did. It was the first thing I tried.

I'll check something and I'll come back later. Other people are experiencing problems with the sound, similar to yours.

Hmm...I also am running Ensoniq Audio PCI and have updated drivers to no avail. Still get each sound once and never again, with or without the music on.

The rest of the particulars:
400Mhz Pentium II
96 Mb RAM

Try the latest patch and tell me if it has changed anything. Thanks.

Also, could you all post what OS (Win9x, Win2k, WinXP, etc.) you are using?

in your case I would suggest adding more RAM. It is cheap right now, so you might consider upgrading to 256mb RAM. It should cost you around 25$.

Installed the patch. No change.

Yeah, but a new pc would be even better! :D

Yes, a new PC would be even better ;)

I've search Creative Labs site, but did not find anything really relevant so far.

Their site mentions that there could be problems with their drivers or the MS drivers with XP. I will investigate further and post on the matter as soon as I can (probably tomorrow night, I've tried searching the Knowledge base on MS site but could never access it)

I think I might have found your problems in the MSKB (Microsoft Knowledge Base).

Article #Q229174:
SYMPTOMS
When you are using an Ensoniq Audio PCI sound card, wave (.wav) files may not be played audibly, even though MIDI files can be heard.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the preferred audio playback device is set to "Use any device."

RESOLUTION
To hear wave file playback using the Ensoniq Audio PCI sound card:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Multimedia.
Click the Audio tab.
In the Playback section, click Ensoniq in the Preferred Device box.
Click OK.

There is also another bug reported in article #Q187796:
BUG: Ensoniq Vortex Driver Fails After Call to midiOutSetVolume

This particular bug concerns General Protection Fault (a crasch+the blue screen of death), so I won't post it here since it doesn't seem relevant, but you might want to check it out anyway.

Viper, hoping for positive feedback :)

I found this in Creative Labs knowledge base:

It doesn't look exactly like your problem, but it might be worth checking it out.

I will continue to search in the meantime.

Weak/Low sound from speakers with a Ensoniq based card

If you are recieving low or weak volume from you speakers and using a Ensoniq based card, some models have a jumper to toggle between Line level out and Speaker Out. Line level out is used when you are using amplified speakers and Speaker out when you are using headphones or non-amplified speakers.

To check to see if your card has the jumper, first shut down the computer and unplug it from the outlet. Next you will need to open your computer case. If you have not done this before please refer to your manual for your case. Once the case it open look for your soundcard. On the sound card there will be a jumper block of 6 pins labeled JP1 . Move the jumpers to the correct pins according to your speaker configuration. After the jumpers are correctly placed, reassemble your computer, plug the power cord back in and reboot your computer.

Mode Jumpers

Line_Out 3-5, 4-6

Speaker_Out 1-3, 2-4

Im afraid to try the last one until absolutely necessary, but the other two changed nothing...

I am at loss here... Try the last one please, there's not much else I can do for now... We, beta testers, don't have the final sound effects, just the old one and since nobody reported problems, either they weren't using Ensoniq sound cards or either they never had problems.

If it still doesn't work, I will post something in the beta forum. It could still be some old/new drivers conflict.
