I'm going to ask in the beta forum if anybody had an Ensoniq sound card.

It might take a couple of days before we get an answer, if we get any.

For now, I am at loss and I don't have anything to suggest.

Try Creative Labs tech support, tell them your problem, copy the "Running problems" thread, and tell them you did all that, on top of what I told you (provide them the article number in both KB), maybe they have a solution for it. If they fix your problem, please post the solution here.

If it's still not working, maybe you should look prices for another sound card... some are not that expensive. And with luck, maybe a small store can agree to take back your old sound card for a few bucks.

Try reverting to an older version of your sound drivers, if they are available.

We will try that, and if it still doesn't work, I'm going to report it as a bug in the new bug forum.

It really seems to be a bug. :(

I have reported it in the beta forum, and I will post it either in the new bug forum, or in bugzilla (our bug reporting software).

If I find an older version of your drivers, I will post the link here.

I'm sorry I couldn't solve your problem. There has been other users experiencing the same thing, but I haven't received any feedback, except yours. Hopefully, Paradox will be able to look into it for a future patch.

Still, there might be a few things you can try, however, I do not think they are relevant in your current issue:
- Upgrade your MB bios
- Your MB manufacturer probably has updated drivers for the chipset and other features, install them.

I have a solution

I had the same problem with my Sound Blaster PCI 128 card (CT 4700). I tried a newer card, SB AudioPCI CT 5820, but the sound still stopped working.
Since I use W98SE, i have forced the installation of the WDM drivers (Windows ME & 2000) instead of VxD drivers. The operation is a bit difficult, but resolves the problem.
The bug is in the Vxd Drivers.:)

thanks for the suggestion! I will recommend it to everyone with the same problem!

I'm experiencing the same problem, using a SoundBlaster PCI128 sound card with win98, 500mhz, 128RAM.

I haven't had any luck installing winME/2000 drivers, or even the latest win98 driver, for that matter. the only driver that I've ever been able to use is the oldest win98 driver.

This is what happens when I try to install a driver: I download the file and unzip. Run the setup prgram and it does it's thing, when it comes to a window saying something about initializing the web autoupdate (or something along those lines... I don't remember)at that point, the windows driver installation wizard comes up and asks me to search for the latest drivers with only "microsoft windows update" toggled it searches and finds nothing, exit that and the window from the original setup program which says initialzing autoupdate is still there, and it doesn't do anything past that. (waited a few minutes with nothing noticeble happening) I had to shut the computer down to reboot - windows wouldn't shut down manually, it'd keep coming back to the desktop.

If you have it, insert your SB PCI128 driver CD. Go into Control Panel -> System properties, double click on your Sound Blaster Card, select the "Driver" folder, select "new driver" or so (i don't know how it's named in english Windows versions) and then select "have disk..."
Choose the directory on your CD with the Win ME/2000 drivers, or WDM drivers. Select the audio card displayed.
I think that's not working with Win 95 and 98 first edition. Only 98SE supports WDM drivers.:(
If you have only drivers with automatic "setup", it's quite impossible to force the installation of the WDM drivers, because the Setup utility recognizes your OS.

It's a rather old CD and only has the 9x drivers. :(

Go to Creative Labs web site and download the ZIP file containing your drivers.

Then, you need to extract them in a directory, and from there, follow the instructions given by Salvor Hardin.

I've downloaded the file and I've tried running it and uncompressing the CAB files generated, but it doesn't seem to work.

I think then there would be no particular solution for your problem :( , unless someone finds other drivers somewhere else on the web.

Sound Issues

I have a Soundblaster Audio PCI 64D, and am having the same problem of special effect sounds just stopping after being heard once. I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Creative Labs. I'm on a Windows 98 Operating Systems, with a Gateway system Pentium II. Can anyone help?

if you still have your original CD, try to install the Windows ME or Windows 2000 drivers. If you don't have the CD, I think there is no way out of this bug for now...

I'm having the same problem, i have a gateway P3 500 with a PCI 64 running windows 98, i downloaded the new drivers still have the problem. I tried to download the ME drivers and it would not let me force install them. I still have the disk but the gateway setup will not let me touch any other drivers, it says i have the newest drivers availible.

What worked for me was starting dxdiag.exe (somewhere in program files/directX/setup), choose the tab sound and putting the slider for hardware sound/full acceleration to the left.

:D Jos Theelen, YOU ROCK!! thanks man that worked!!!!

For everyone else with this problem try going into the control panel then go to multimedia then select the advanced properties for the playback button. then under the performance tab move the hardware acceleration all the way to the left to "none" and then problem solved!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again Jos Theelen!!!!
