I'm finally up-to-date again, and ready for the finale!

Marisol is doing a great job damaging the Sarcophagus, considering that she took the brunt of an explosion and that the Reality Perforator probably weighs into the hundreds of pounds.

When was Aisling given plot armor, and by whom? And why Aisling, and not any other Creation?

  • Gur-Mon Madron's Sarcophagus: Location unknown. Madron died at Tethys Seamount during the Battle for Earth and his personal fortress was never found. His Sarcophagus is presumed permanently lost.
Can we assume this is the Sarcophagus used by Malum, seeing as the two others have been destroyed?

By the way, where was Madron's personal fortress?

Saint-Domingue (Authoritarian state dependent on slave labor to function)
I had noticed that the states in Unsung Paragons are based on real-world examples (the Guardian Council is a dead giveaway), but the feature cited above could easily be inspired by Qatar as well. Only about 11% of Qatar's inhabitants have the Qatarese nationality, the rest being migrant workers. And as the world learned two years ago, most of those workers are not particularly well-treated.

The Sarcophagus was starting to glow. Someone had killed Malum!
I never thought this would ever be bad news xD

Jericho turning up is interesting. What's her one condition though?
Her condition is the reason there's only one viable way to defeat Malum.

Welcome back! Had a hunch you were catching up when I spotted an unusual influx of YouTube comments. :)

Marisol is doing a great job damaging the Sarcophagus, considering that she took the brunt of an explosion and that the Reality Perforator probably weighs into the hundreds of pounds.
We can allow Marisol to think the Reality Perforator is that heavy. ;) In my worldbuilding notes for Year of Hell, I explicitly wrote that the Reality Perforator weighs about 60 pounds (around 27.2 kilograms) despite being no bigger than a baseball. Thankfully for us, Marisol went through the infamously difficult training program for professional flight attendants, so lifting heavy loads is nothing new to her. She could open the emergency escape doors on an Airbus through sheer force if she needed to.

When was Aisling given plot armor, and by whom? And why Aisling, and not any other Creation?
While Aisling is only the deuteragonist here in The Broken Gates, she was (however briefly) a fully-fledged main protagonist of a Macavity116 story. So she's had some degree of plot armor the whole time. No one has drawn attention to this detail yet because I'm saving it for one of the final chapters, but have you noticed that this story has the lowest bodycount in the history of my homebrewed universe? Normally, the climactic final battles in my tales are... well... a straight-up bloodbath.

Only one person has died in The Broken Gates so far, a Creation. A second Creation (Erin Bowie, the server at the bAAR) is currently doomed by the plot, which means this story could end with a grand total of two deaths, the fewest I've ever written by a longshot. Hell, I killed a few background characters in Grand Theft Stellaris, which is an unintentional comedy that somehow has a higher death count than this story. The Broken Gates has become an anomaly.

Aisling is not the only Creation with plot armor. ;)

Can we assume this [The Chosen Hunter's Sarcophagus] is the Sarcophagus used by Malum, seeing as the two others have been destroyed?

By the way, where was Madron's personal fortress?
I think that's a safe bet. And I do like the idea of Malum jumping into the world of The Stormbreakers to try and find the Chosen Hunter's fortress... mostly because it's located in the Australian Outback and I love the mental picture of Malum fighting his way past Australian wildlife to reach it. :D

I never thought [Malum's sudden battlefield demise] would ever be bad news xD
Now you see why I never revisited the concept of the Psionic Sarcophagus after The Stormbreakers. These things are insanely unbalanced.

That doesn't tell us all that much. :)

It is amusing that the OP Unreal Tournament-like Psionic Sarcophagus is being smashed in by a just as OP ball of story-warping. But... I can't help but feel like we did miss out on a scene of Rikvah playing with it like a cat with a tennis ball.

The low casualty rate is definitely odd now you point it out... I never thought we'd get to the point where Life2.0 has more named viewpoint character deaths than any Macavity116 narrative, but here we are.

I bet Rivkah could have gotten the normally serious Sebakhira to join in. At the end of the day, a Lioness is still a cat.

Back in the days of the Stormbreaker Universe, I also made frequent use and abuse of nuclear weapons in my space battle scenes. To this day, I still unconditionally love the sequence where Erin Hyatt and Blake Robinson are blinded by a nuclear flash. (Erin gets better, Blake permanently looses an eye) I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who loves to explore the subject.

But have no fear. At this point, I've pretty much committed to my next Stellaris story Unsung Paragons opening with a bloodbath in an early chapter. Killing off the command crew of the starship Marathon is pretty central to the whole "Ino must make her way as Acting Captain" story idea.

Make it three - with assassins generating every century it seems in my AAR and the vibe I'm thinking of for a 5-part series being '8 POVs per novel and only 3 survive the series' I clearly also have a thing for killing off important characters.

Far, far behind in my reading. Just caught up with this one (have had to leave the previews to a later time).

I will also say thank you for your service on many levels. A lot going on right now and I'm sure you are contributing in a positive way. How you are doing what you do and still have time to play games and write stories, well, I'll never know.

I have also left my voluntary editing duties behind for the moment. Didn't want to break up the flow here with call backs to items from two chapters back.

Aisling is not the only Creation with plot armor. ;)
I realize we haven't seen or heard from the Blake character lately. So where is he? Could he be in a different reality, spinning the story?

This question is crucial because who is granting the "plot armor?" Someone is affecting the reality in this story to grant that. Who? And how?

And now that the Creations understand that, can't Malum learn that from his powers just to read their minds?

Definitely a lot of plot to explain with these latest twists, especially if the tale is to be truly multi-dimensional.

George RR Martin would be proud of us.

I love how the character from Liechtenstein is called... Elodie Liechtenstein :D
I'm still flirting with the idea of Elodie having a sub-plot involving the Liechtenstein royal family.

I see that you still haven't lost your love for the numbers 116 and 15! xP
Nope!

Just caught up with this one
Welcome back! I see I'm not the only one trapped in a hyper-busy schedule.

How you are doing what you do and still have time to play games and write stories, well, I'll never know.
Oh, that's simple. I don't sleep. o_O

I realize we haven't seen or heard from the Blake character lately. So where is he?
Blake the Creator is safely sequestered in the PDX lobby, dealing with the wounded members of Cali's team. At least for the moment, he doesn't know Mira, Toa Mami, and Jericho have taken the field.

This question is crucial because who is granting the "plot armor?"
Considering how heavy a role Marisol played in creating Aisling... there's a chance that Marisol unwittingly gave Aisling plot armor. Marisol really wants Aisling to live through her own story so she can have an... interesting love life. That might explain why Aisling was shielded from an attack that would have left her covered in scars.

So what you are saying here is Marisol's granting of powers carried over into the real world and she was unaware of her own intents?

I suppose that follows from the making of Creations that emerge into this world. However, I think you are treading close to the edge of negating the "suspension of disbelief" and you might have to provide some further explanation in a chapter to pull some readers back from that dangerous spot.

Rivkah and Sebakhira playing with the reality perforator like that is such a fun idea.

That... Must be a pretty disappointing way to go really. Join the navy in a war, you kind of expect to go out in a blaze of glory... Not in a big car crash.

I think this is the perfect setting to have plot armour; the fates of nearly every character are constrained by the plot as the applicable characters all have their own stories to return to that they have to be around for necessarily. The only major exception is Malum, naturally; it's quite elegant.

I can see how that works in an outline.

However, all of these characters have been altered by their experiences in this universe. If they go back to their stories they will change how those stories work. Besides do they really go back? Those stories have evolved without this version of these characters as subsequent chapters have already been written. The characters don't disappear from the original story. It is as if they have been cloned at a certain point to appear in this story. This is why these types of multiverse stories sometimes can make your head hurt.

The plot armor concept here needs bolstering.

This being the first AAR of yours I've caught "live", I had no idea its low body count was unique. Interesting.

Did Jericho purposely ignore Marisol's call with the Reality Perferator because she was waiting for Emily?

It would be exceptionally difficult for their friends and family to accept at home. A small amount of real-world war stories went into generating this scenario. I also borrowed a few elements from the story of how PFC Jessica Lynch became a POW during the 2003 Iraq Invasion.

The only major exception is Malum, naturally; it's quite elegant.
Unexpected elegance. That makes my Thursday. :)

This being the first AAR of yours I've caught "live", I had no idea its low body count was unique. Interesting.
Oh, yeah. High lethality and intense war violence is a well-known trope in my stories. Faith in Chaos had a whole planet getting blown up Star Wars style. After Everything saw an army of tanks and infantry attacking a military base that was bombarded by nuclear weapons. Year of Hell had the nuclear tunnel bomb. And that's all without mentioning the absolute carnage of the War in Heaven and the Rescue at Cape Canaveral. (The Stormbreakers and The Last Heroes respectively)

Did Jericho purposely ignore Marisol's call with the Reality Perforator because she was waiting for Emily?
It's a blink-and-you'll miss it line of narration: "About five minutes ago... at almost the exact moment Marisol used the Reality Perforator to summon Mira and Toa Mami, Emily materialized inside one of Blake’s older stories... and came face to face with another Creation..."

Marisol attempted to pull Jericho into the real world at roughly the same moment Jericho entered the real world on her own. They just missed each other.

If they go back to their stories they will change how those stories work.
This is a fun thought experiment that might get some pagetime in the final chapters after Malum's defeat. (This is why the story has a "falling action/resolution" section in the table of contents. There's just too many loose ends to tie up.

This is why these types of multiverse stories sometimes can make your head hurt.
Yes. Yes exactly.

Glad you both see what I'm getting at here. It's like writing as three dimensional chess (or four dimensional chess if that is possible). Because plot armor is a very conscious authorial choice my understanding is that someone has to be directing this story and thus the armor. I'm hoping we will get some further explanation of those concepts (along with all the action) as this ties itself up). (Or will it tie up? Will it be left for the inevitable sequel?)

I love how Aisling got literal plot armor. How will Blake react to that?

Jericho's here. At least she isn't going to be tempted by Malum. Is her one condition something along the lines that the Creations must be allowed to choose if they want to return to their realities or stay in the real world? She seemed annoyed at the lack of free will thing back in The Great Lie.

Did Aising notice that Uisce's name literally means "water" in Irish Gaelic (was that deliberate? Because it's a hilarious coincidence if not)?

The Reality Perforator can be used to enter any story at any time, right? Could that be used to drop Akira off in, like, the First Cycle and prevent all of the atrocities she causes, for example?

It had better tie up, owing to the fact that The Broken Gates isn't getting a sequel.

I imagine Blake would want to know who else has been secretly shielded.

Jericho is more annoyed with the way Blake treats his characters than anything else. And I think Paradox Interactive might try to take full control over the methods by which Creations are able to return to their own stories.

Did Aising notice that Uisce's name literally means "water" in Irish Gaelic (was that deliberate? Because it's a hilarious coincidence if not)?
It was deliberate. All six of the characters in my poorly-made Guess the Author entry were named after the six elements of the Bionicle Universe, a story-driven LEGO toyline that was a massive influence on my own stories.

So far, we don't know if this is possible. Based on Jericho's explanation in The Great Lie, the only thing we know for certain is that any Creation returning to their story would be dropped into a moment of time after the point they were pulled from.

Unsung Paragons Preview #3
Dear readers, I have good news:

Both of my jobs are starting to ease up on me! The upshot of the lighter workload is that I can write more than one page per day. So, with one hand over what I think might be my heart, I promise you that there will be two chapters of The Broken Gates next week! :D

To make up for the profound schedule slip that has been happening ever since the tornado outbreak in Michigan/US Presidential Debate/Assassination Attempt on the Former President/My party hot-swapping presidential candidates/a bunch my fellow soldiers getting deployed overseas/ literally a year's worth of stuff happened in just 5 weeks, I would like to offer you another peek behind the curtain.

Please allow me to share two more pages of the Technical and Historical Bible for my next story. I hope it holds you over until The Broken Gates resumes next week.

UNSUNG PARAGONS
Introduction to Sota and Elodie

Deuteragonist: Sota Beninato

embed

Species and Species type: Human/Mammalian
Age: 27
Homeworld: Earth
Hometown/Country: Yishun, Singapore
Military service/rank: Coalition Engineer Corps/Lieutenant

Background: Sota was an orphan raised on the streets of Singapore by members of a street gang that claimed (without proof) to be associated with the long-extinct Chinese Triads. Sota engaged in criminal activity alongside his adoptive family from a young age, quickly showing an aptitude for technically sophisticated crimes, such as hijacking electronic vehicles, commandeering ATM machines, and tampering with androids. As he grew older, Sota began to resent his life on the streets and wanted to escape Singapore by any means possible. At the age of 17, Sota found a recruiter for the Coalition Navy and bribed the man into allowing Sota to enlist.

Normally, the Coalition will only take people who are already serving in the military forces of whatever government they were born under, although exceptions are occasionally made. Sota bribed his way into the exceptions with all of the money he had in savings. After taking the Coalition Aptitude Test, Sota was assigned a role in the Engineer Corps, starting his career as a Boatswain’s Mate aboard the Heroine-class Frigate Defiance. Sota transferred off the vessel before the GALEX Incident occurred, but he did hear about it through INN. (Interstellar News Network, the internal news network of the Coalition) Sota was deeply impressed by Ino Esperanta’s unconventional tactics and confessed to a friend that he had a “fanboy crush” on Ino.

After the Forgotten War began, Sota was transferred to the Saturn-class Cruiser Narvi as an assistant roboticist, doing maintenance work on military grade android. He participated in the Liberation of Cevasia and subsequent “Hyperlane of Death” in which the Coalition fleet inflicted serious casualties on Fellowship forces as they attempted to retreat. During the fighting, Sota commanded a mechanized squad (mixed force of organic and android fighters) in a combat spacewalk operation against a Fellowship-controlled Hyper Relay. The operation was both a tactical and strategic success for the Coalition, causing Sota to be decorated with an Interstellar Service Cross. He was also rewarded with a promotion to Lieutenant and transfer to the Azrael Improved-class Battleship Marathon.

During the final days of the Forgotten War, Sota was elevated to the position of Chief Engineering Officer for the Marathon. Since his specialty is with Androids and computer technology, Sota chose to build a team of engineers to cover all of the tasks and duties not within his own expertise. By the time the story begins, Sota has built his crew into a well-drilled team, and he also enjoys a strong working relationship with the MiG-95 pilots and flight crews.

Sota’s Story: At the very moment when the story begins, Sota Beninato has gotten his life exactly where he wants it to be. He has escaped from his old life, found a job he is good at, and is being rewarded for his job performance. Sota thinks he has reached a moment of perfection and does not want any aspect of his life to change right now.

Unfortunately, an enemy ambush will completely upend Sota’s perfect life, force him out of his comfort zone, and send Sota heading in the one direction he does not want to go… back toward Earth.

Tritagonist: Princess Elodie of Liechtenstein
embed

Species and Species type: Human/Mammalian

Age: 23
Homeworld: Earth
Birthplace: Zürich, Swiss Confederation
Home Town/Country: Vaduz, Principality of Liechtenstein
Military service/rank: UN Space Marine Corps/Staff Sergeant

Background: Elodie is an Earthborn member of the UN Space Marines, serving as part of the Coalition. She is the granddaughter of Prince Franz Joseph VI, the current monarch of Liechtenstein, a European microstate. Under the laws of Liechtenstein, Elodie is ineligible to inherit the throne due to being female. Elodie was educated in Switzerland, a mountainous European country that has assumed the role of Liechtenstein’s protector and advocate on both the global and interstellar stage. Before her eighteenth birthday, Princess Elodie told her family about her desire to enter a life of public service, and that she wanted to gain worldly experience through military service before starting said life. With the Prince’s consent, Elodie was enlisted in the Swiss Armed Forces at the rank of Gefreiter.

After one year of service, Elodie allowed her wanderlust to get the best of her. She requested permission from her commander to take the Coalition Aptitude Test, a prerequisite to joining the armed forces of the multispecies interplanetary alliance. After receiving a middling score, Elodie requested a transfer to the Coalition-affiliated branch of the UN Space Marine Corps.

Elodie conducted Space Marine training at Stickney Crater Training Facility, a UNSMC base located on one of the Maritan moons. She demonstrated an aptitude for boarding actions, and repeatedly outpaced her comrades on the live-fire course, dispatching her simulated foes with minimal collateral damage and no instances of friendly fire, accidental or otherwise. Elodie was promoted to the rank of Wachtmeister (Sergeant in the UNSMC) and transferred to the Rwanda-class Cruiser Autonoe.

During her service aboard the Autonoe, Elodie saw action in the Border War, a short military conflict between the Empire of Axpentl and the Coalition, of which Earth is a member. All of the Coalition’s interstellar borders are poorly demarcated, due to its neighbors being hostile and unwilling to cede territory they view as their own. Elodie conducted one combat boarding action, forcefully seizing control of an Axpentl warship that refused to surrender after being disabled in battle. Elodie also performed five non-combat boardings against disabled/derelict Coalition warships. She also received cross-training to perform the role of Weapon Systems Officer (Wizzo) in the MiG-95 starfighter.

When the Desstican Astral Fellowship launched its invasion of the Augmented Cevanti Administration, Elodie was re-deployed to the Weeping Ghost Nebula as part of the Coalition’s effort to save its new ally. She was transferred to the Azrael Improved-class Battleship Marathon, promoted to Staff Sergeant, and then made second-in-command of the Marathon’s Marine detachment under Irish Marine Jason O’Kirwan.

Elodie’s Story: Elodie is an adventurous soul who wants to see as much of the universe as she can and have a few good adventures before she must return home to do the duties expected of her by the House of Liechtenstein.

At the beginning of the story, Elodie is itching for action. She was not present for the Liberation of Cevasia (the Allied Homeworld) and has been obsessively studying the disastrous First Landing, in which a Coalition transport fleet attempted to deploy Assault Armies on the surface of Cevasia, only to be ambushed and destroyed by cloaked warships under the command of Araj Zilfallon, causing tens of thousands of Coalition fatalities.

Elodie has been putting her squad through additional training, hoping she will get a chance to fight the Fellowship forces before the war ends. Unfortunately, Elodie’s first combat action of the Forgotten War will find her on the receiving end of an ambush…
