There is something wrong with this picture, but I'm not quite sure what...

Is this a bug? It looks like a bug.

Not a bug, it's one of the faiths that permeated your homeworld before religion was abolished. You can get it as any non-gestalt ethos.

But if he finishes the events, then takes the ethics-shift towards Spiritualist...what happens?

It *shouldn't* replace his non-Materialist ethic, because you're not supposed to have Spiritualism and Materialism as governing ethics at the same time.
It also *shouldn't* simply downgrade his Materialism from Fanatic to regular, because that would leave him with only two Ethic points.

This requires further study.

Well you'll have to figure that one out yourself because I suppressed the findings. After all it IS just superstitious nonsense, and I can't have my borg-shrooms be distracted away from their research!
Though now I'm curious what would happen if you embraced the divinity AFTER synthetically ascending every member of your empire into a robot...

Now I want to try this out and see what happens when my synth empire has the fanatic spiritual empire and their "no ai rights" policy.

The same thing that happens if he normally switched to those Ethics and Civics, just quicker. As Materialist and Spiritualist are on the same Axis, any gain for one is a automatic loss for the other.

As you said, the event gives him the choice. It does not force him to. I do not see a issue with the player having a choice, including going to the exactly opposite Ethics.

Hey look, the Great Khan's throne, thats a cool relic...

But wait a second... I don't have the Ancient Relics DLC.

You still have the shared code in game's modules. Anyway, you can't activate the Throne, as it seems.

Actually I already activated it to see if I could, it says I can't because it's currently active.

So influence was spent and the modifier was added?

Yep. Now, time to clean up the mess that the Khan left behind. While sitting on her throne.

It's not a bug. A number of things that where in the game before the relics dlc where reworked and given their own relics.
Relics you can get and use if you own the dlc that those things came from even if you didn't buy the relics dlc.

WAD. The Relics system is, AFAIK, fully modable and designed so that people can make use of it without having the DLC. A few relics are introduced by prior DLC content, too.

Think of it as how you could always find Sanctuary and the Materialist Ringworlds even without owning Utopia to build your own, or how some of the FEs have Ecumenopolis worlds even if you don't own Megacorp.

Cybrex Warforge is serious business. Building my third and fourth ringworlds (I have all the other wonders except Art Installation which is in progress). 16.8 robot growth on planets with the 80 pop capital building. It's insane, between early Megaengineering and super-charged robot growth you just explode. The only conquering I've done was of my Fanatic Purifier Life Seeded (lol) neighbour. That's the north part of my empire. I have a bit over 1.5 million fleet power.

The game mechanics and game systems related to relics were patch content. Many of the actual relics themselves (and I think all of the digsites and relic worlds) are DLC content. This way they can expand on relics and digsites in future releases. Similar to how the three ascension paths themselves are DLC content, but ascension perks as a game mechanic are part of the base game - so if they wanted they could add more ascension paths in a future release, and they have added new perks as well.

Stuff like this is why I think Stellaris has perfected the PDS DLC model. Putting game systems into DLC never works well long term. See Estates in EU4 - they had to make them baseline eventually but then they made the same mistake again and made the government reforms system DLC content when they should have put the system in the patch, and the unique reforms in the DLC.

Relics and Archeology as Systems are free features. A lot of the content for them is not.

Note that I also only said most:
The basegame feature of the Endgame Crisis and other DLC things like Leviathans and the Horde were given Relics.

While there currently is no basegame Archeology, modders can use this. And it is planned (they simply lacked the time) to retrofit all precursors (and propably the odd other chain) to use this system.

This is different from the original Ascension Perks, wich were a pure DLC feature. Until they basegamed as well :)
