The Andorians seem determined to stir up trouble. Reports from our agents say that they have declared the Nausiccan Tribes as their rivals! After all the effort we put in to sorting out their troubles with the Vulcans, they want to pick another fight!

0220

Our diplomats at least have been able to preserve the sometimes shaky links between the other members of the Federation of United Planets. With the slogan “Unity is in Earth’s Interest”, the organisation has a new structure. It is agreed that Earth will assume the title “United Federation of Planets” and the other three entities will be members of that group. There will be a Civic Drive for Self-Improvement, and adoption of the Prime Directive in relationships with other species.

0323

Our fleet has arrived in the Ross 164 system and has found that the USS Brown has been ambushed by an unidentified Patrol Frigate not far from the third planet, Aldus. It is racing to assist, but while we have no communications with Atharv Namboodiri, our sensors indicate that the Science Ship is about to make an emergency jump to save itself from destruction.

Brown.jpg

Rescue mission in Ross 164 system

To slightly offset that alarming news, there have been multiple contacts from individual Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites asking whether they could migrate to United Earth colonies. They have told that all colonies, and the homeworld itself, would welcome migrants of any species.

Envoy Miroslava Vasiliev has been assigned to learn more about the just discovered and temporarily named “Beth Aliens”. Sigismund Richter will perform the same task for the Altarian Confederacy which has made itself known to us.

A new faction has sprung up on Earth. Calling themselves the “Academy of Technologists” they seek scientific leadership and decry politics. Not surprisingly, they are weak on Earth, the centre of politics, and strong in the colonies.

0323

Disaster! Erika Hernandez sent a brief message before the USS Crazy Horse made an emergency jump to who knows where. The unidentified enemy space-craft destroyed three of our frigates with ease and Commander Hernandez and the “Crazy Horse” survived through luck alone. Three ship and their crews lost, one missing for months at least. As well as the missing Science Ship USS Brown and its leader Atharv Nambooridi.

To deal with the matter, it has been agreed that a combined space fleet command structure will be created, to be known as “Starfleet” and made up of ships, crews and commanders of all members of the Federation. It will control all exploration, migration and defence activities in space in our region.

The 1st United Fleet will comprise the cruiser “Pralim”, IGS Kumari and VSS Seleya, with Earth’s light cruiser Aragom NCC-93 preparing to join the others. In addition, three Science Ships will be deployed to Starfleet: TSC Gann, IGS Shalakai and VSS Sh’Kyr.

New ships.jpg
The beginningof the 1st United Fleet

To command these ships, several transfers of proven officers have been approved. The Vulcan Saval, already an experienced diplomat and intellectual, will benefit from more diplomatic experience. From the Denobulan Unity, Phlox is recognised as a medical expert, but will also now be key for recycling all materials. The Andorian Thy’lek Shran is a military officer, renowned for his aggressiveness and his refusal to yield.

Science.jpg

Our allies have also contributed research vessels

While Starfleet ponder the response to the Ross 164 attack, the three new science ships will not sit idle. Phlox and the “Gann” will survey Lolande 25372, the Aenar scientist Jhamel will have her first command taking the “Shalakai” to 70 Ophiuchi and the Tellarite Skalaar will also be promoted, in charge of Sh’Kyr as it heads to Struve 2398. All a safe distance from Ross 164.

With all these momentous events, less excitement was generated than might normally have been expected by First Contact with two new species. The first, nicknamed the “Beth Aliens” are in the Kreuger system. The second, who call themselves the Altairian Confederacy, are, not surprisingly, in the Altair system. Miroslava Vasiliev and Sigismund Richter have been appointed as envoys to discover more about them.

0423

With Wolf 424A fully mapped, USS Franklin makes the short trip to Wolf 329.

In what for the moment is primarily a publicity move, Earth Spacedock is to be renamed “Starbase 1”. I am not sure what is planned, but there are no budget adjustments, so any changes are likely to be cosmetic.

0426

As our allies (subjects?) have contributed enough ships to more than cover our losses at Ross 164, preparations for the colonisation of both Vega IV and New Montana continue. The latter will be made with Vulcan settlers, as the torrid conditions suit that species perfectly.

New montana marked.jpg

Yet another colony in the Alpha Centauri system

0504

One potential problem is put to rest, with a non-aggression treaty with the Denobulans signed and sealed. “Volga”, having completed the Capella Aa Starbase, has begun to construct an observation post over the planet Capella. There is much we can learn by watching a late Medieval culture develop.

0603

Miroslava Vasiliev’s first report on the “Beth Aliens” is a little disturbing. She describes them as some sort of automated mechanical mining drones, and warns that they should be treated with caution: we have no idea of their intentions.

Tulgana Prime is out 6th colony, and work is already underway on its hospital. This has prompted a review of our administration. There are now two sectors. Earth Sector contains the homeworld, Luna, Mars, Alpha Centauri Primus and Secundus and Sirius Prime. Its governor is the Minister of Defence, Mario Galvani. The Tulgana Sector has just two colonies for now: Tulgana Priome and T’Jem, the Vulcan holy world. It is governed by the Vulcan diplomat Saval.

Saval large.jpg

Governor Saval in his official regalia

0608

Captain Archer has identified an anomaly in the Capella system, some sort of unusual subspace readings, and requests permission to investigate. Starfleet has granted permission. I must admit to getting nervous whenever Captain Archer does anything out of the ordinary. Perhaps this time all will go smoothly.

0703

The military wing of Starfleet Command is ecstatic: with our new knowledge of Advanced Thermonuclear Warfare we can equip our ships with fusion torpedoes. Now they insist that we give our combat vessels speed as well, by looking for a Breakthrough in Propulsion Design.

The Phi Aliens are alien no longer. They are members of the Rigellian Confederacy. While discussions are not exactly friendly, we have agreed that we can learn from each other.

0810

I knew it! Captain Archer attracts danger like a magnet. He reports that when he approached the source of the unusual readings an alien ship appeared. When attempts were made to hail it, the ship warped away. He asks whether he should follow it or wait for it to possibly return. Starfleet is quick to respond: leave the area and avoid all confrontation!

0813

The alien vessel has reappeared and the “Enterprise” has detected what appears to be signs of weapons being activated. Captain Archer, mindful of his orders to avoid confrontation, is trying to hail the other ship.

0814

There was been no response from the aliens and the ship took off at warp speed as it had before. This time however, it seems to have beamed a boarding party onto the “Enterprise”. Swift action by the Security Officer forced the aliens to retreat to a cargo bay. Only five remained alive, and as the crew of the “Enterprise” considered what to do next, those five blew the doors of the cargo bay and were ejected into space.

hold.jpg

Security teams found no alien survivors in the damaged cargo hold

A considerable amount of knowledge in all fields was gained, but we still know nothing really about these aliens nor why they showed such hostility.

0818

Now it is the turn of Captain T’pol to report an anomaly. Hopefully this will be less alarming. She informs us that the surface of Tau Ceti IV has some sort of markings – her Science Officer thinks that these may be some sort of writing. The survey of the Tau Ceti system is not urgent, and she has been granted leave to investigate before returning USS Clark to its set task.

0902

Our colonies are the ones to rejoice with the announcement of our latest scientific advance. Being able to produce a Barystatic Atmosphere Filter will make all our colonies more habitable, and offers to prospect of less costly supplies through recycling.

Other than the fact that it won’t take too long, I am not sure why we are dedicating time and effort to study Javonite Jewellery. Some people have suggested that workshops making jewellery might provide a source of income for the new colonies. I doubt it, but anything to speed up their growth would be good: Treasury is complaining constantly about the drain on resources. Not that it has any effect on the Council: our policy is expansion into the galaxy.

Some colonies are starting to make their own way. Tulgana Prime is constructing a Fusion Reactor and the Vulcans on P’Jem, despite its role as a centre of spirituality, are building a Civilian Industry Centre.

reactor.jpg

The Tulgana Fusion Reactor: small but able to provide more than enough energy for the colony

0920

Our observation post at Capella is in operation and “Volga” is off to build a mining station over Capella Ab.

In her final report on the Beth Aliens, Miroslave Vasiliev confirms her earlier supposition. They are non-sentient mining drones and must be treated with extreme caution as we have no idea what their programming might lead them to do.

More factions have been created. What is going on with people? What on earth are the “Vanguard of the Chosen”? They appear very aggressive to me, with all this talk of domination. The other group are their polar opposite. The “SolarCorp News Service” advocate a more caring, sharing relationship with other species. I suppose all these political lobby groups are OK as long as they don’t create trouble.

1103

Time for another major announcement by the Council. They have decided that mankind has another Tradition: Discovery! Amidst all the fanfare it is hard to discern any real benefit from this, at least for now, but I am assured that by making a big fuss about it that our scientists in space will apply extra effort in researching anomalies.

They may also get some benefit from our study of Gravimetric Field Displacement. Our engineers say it will allow our ships to be equipped with Gravimetric Manifold Warp Engines. One of the last of the “short term” projects has been selected for the next study area: Renewable Energy. Given the demand for energy as we expand, this is likely to be popular with Treasury. We barely produce enough for our needs, and it would be good to have some sort of buffer in case of shortages.

Sigismund Richter reports that the Altairian Confederacy, while happy to maintain contact, wish to remain in their own system.

11.11

Unlike her erstwhile commander, Captain Archer, Captain T’Pol has completed her study of an anomaly with no excitement and no loss of life. The markings on Tau Ceti IV are indeed writing. It would appear as if a bored alien mercenary with a powerful laser weapon amused itself by etching a short story of its exploits onto the rocky surface of the planet. It may amuse tourists, but not really of any further interest.

l-intro-1692386869.jpg

Captain T’Pol reports her findings from Tau Ceti IV

The year ended with no further activity from the hostile aliens in the Ross 164 system. They are still foremost in Starfleet Command’s thoughts however. We cannot ignore a threat so close to our main communication line not only to our colonies, but also to our allies. But what can we do when the single vessel is able to destroy three frigates so easily? What is clear that it will take more than the current fleet and current technology to find out.

We have been approached by the Denobulan Unity with an interesting offer. They want to set up an “Interspecies Medical Exchange” to benefit all species that wish to join. The initial cost is fairly high, but the long-term gain should more than cover that. The Council has agreed and 100 Energy Credits paid to the start up fund. Dr Phlox has been appointed to represent the United Federation of Planets.

Phlox_(Star_Trek).jpg

Though taken aback at first, Dr Phlox is keen to join the Interspecies Medical Exchange

There was a far more important decision to be made by the Council the same day. Should our engineers go down the path of high energy or low temperature thrusters? There are strong arguments for both, but in the end those arguing for the low temperature alternative were successful. There is no going back: we are committed.

The decision made, there was an immediate breakthrough in Propulsion Design, The Low Temperature Thruster design will allow us to install Stealth Thrusters in our ships. Engineering effort is now turned to attack: Tallonite Crystal Mining will increase the power of our Beam Weapons.

A final decision made on 0102 concerned “Society” research, a broad umbrella which, as far as I can see, covers everything not grabbed by the physicists and the engineers. The minor study into Javonite Jewellery complete, the sociologists are now looking into devising a system of Planetary Unification. Well intentioned I am sure, but how will that help deal with the threat lurking at Ross 164.

There is another potential problem in that direction of space. The Andorians tell us that they have detected a large Klingon fleet in the Leta Zeporis system. This is the closest system to Andorian territory controlled by the Klingons, and given the Klingon reputation for violence, the Andorians are justifiably concerned. Our diplomats think they may be over-anxious. I suppose it could be some sort of fleet exercises but I am the over-anxious type as well.

1 Threats.jpg

Threats are some distance away, and I seem to be the only worried, but still ….

0122

With the Capellan observation post in operation, all seems well. The Capellans are said to have a low awareness of our presence.

Next for “Volga” is to claim Wolf 424A for the Federation.

0130

A series of diplomatic negotiations all took place on this date. The Rigellian Consortium established an embassy on Earth while the Council declared that the United Federation of Planets would expand its diplomatic outreach. There has been an immediate response as we have improved our relationship with the Xyrillian Democratic Alliance. It is still classed as “Low Intensity”, but that’s a start.

With Dr Phlox away, ISC Gann is to be under the command of Ellen Haygarth. Barely 28 and inexperienced, she is apparently known for her careful approach. Starfleet sees her as an explorer rather than a combat commander.

0302

The colonies are happy that with the Renewable Energy research we have done Geothermal Power Stations are a reality. Al the potential projects proposed are going to be difficult, but they are all necessary. The first undertaken will be Inertial Electrostatic Confinement, whatever that is. It is supposed to deliver more energy from our power stations, so I suppose I am for it. Not that anyone cares what a librarian thinks, no matter how senior.

square-1477069357-frett1.jpg

The first step to a geothermal power plant: drilling many kilometres to the magna layer of the planet

Just as I was about to leave work, thinking another peaceful day had passed, an alert rang out. Luna has been attacked! Not much is known about who carried out the attack, but 15% of the colony has been destroyed, and housing, amenities, trade and population growth have been reduced to nil for at least 2 months.

Sensor sweeps cannot locate an enemy for the fleet to attack, but the USS Brown with Atharv Nambooridiri is on its way to provide assistance.

0424

The p-Eridani Research Station functioning as intended, “Sahara” will make use of our relatively new knowledge of Topaline mining to construct a Mining Station over P’Jem.

0602

As if the Luna attack were not enough, there are now rumours that there will be a similar attack on Cajitar IV! There is a small Vulcan colony on the planet, and the First Unified Fleet has left already to try to get there before the enemy.

It did not take long for the engineers to solve the problems associated with Tallonite Crystal Mining. A far more complex, but ultimately rewarding, task is ahead of them. Trellium-D distiallation. We have ample reserves of Trellium-D, but it is one of the rarer minerals in the galaxy and of great value, so we are keen to increase our production of it.

Trellium_d_formula.jpg

The chemical structure of Trellium-D is complex, making refining exceedingly difficult

In other scientific news, a study into the mechanical drones has begun and a Starfleet Science Division is being established on Vulcan.

It seems the wrong time to be starting a colony with so many dangers appearing, but the settlers left long ago, and cannot remain in the ship forever. Alpha Centauri Tertius is in the process of being colonised. It is very close to Earth so maybe I am being too worried.

0905

Captain Archer is on his best behaviour, obeying his orders to survey the Aldicarb system and moving on to Cavazos.

It is Captain Sota Suzuki who is giving Starfleet concern. The “Franklin” has detected unusual subspace activity near Wolf 359. He asked permission to investigate and, with some hesitation, it was given.

1027

The “Sahara” having finished the Topaline Mine at P’Jem heads to build a Starbase at Aldicarb to incorporate it into Federation territory.

1121

I felt that Starfleet Command should have thought a bit more about allowing Captain Suzuki to look into that anomaly. The strange readings the “Franklin” detected came from a mysterious and enormous ship that appeared nearby. It did not respond to hails and suddenly opened massive hatch doors and engulfed our ship!

Wisps_ship_maw.jpg

The alien ship open its doors and draws the “Franklin” into itself

The alien ship appeared lifeless, its atmosphere almost 100% helium. Captain Suzuki had little option to investigate further. All of a sudden the atmosphere turned into a very breathable nitrogen-oxygen mixture. What the crew described as “blue wisps” appeared and one of them disappeared into the captain, who became unconscious, although otherwise unharmed.

Nobody knows what to do. In any case, another far more pressing issue is occupying not only Starfleet Command but the entire Council of the United Federation of Planets.

The Klingon Empire has declared war on us! Early indications are that the Klingon’s objective is complete vassalisation.

The Council held an emergency session at which it was decided that our only response could be to seek the demilitarisation of the Klingon Empire. The construction of a light cruiser was approved, but lack of alloys prevents any further expansion of the fleet. In any case, the threat is still a huge distance away from the Federation’s main population and industry centres. Perhaps we can persuade the Klingons to enter peace discussions before things get too nasty.

1125

One problem has solved itself. Captain Suzuki has regained consciousness and said that the “wisps” just want their ship repaired so they can proceed. He agreed to do this and they left. Suzuki gained experience from the encounter, and his report will aid our sociologists in their research.

2169

0130

Maxwell Forrest has become Governor of Cajitar IV. His first announcement was that Frontier Hospital would be built – even with the Klingon War the anonymous threat to the colony is being taken seriously.

0215

Planetary Unification will boost unity considerably, but that is less important now. The sociologists have little to offer in the way of military projects though, and are now working on Astrometrics, which they promise will aid all scientific research.

0226

Our studies of the mining drones has paid off. As expected, mining efficiency has been improved, but a welcome by-product is that our weapons will do far more damage. If the Klingon war heats up we will be better prepared, even if our intelligence is that they have an overwhelming force.

The physicists are more help for the war effort than the sociologists. As expected, the Inertial Electrostatic Containment studies will increase power production but they can offer the military Phase Modulated Particle Weaponry – in a year or so. We may have that long before the Klingon threat becomes a reality. Whatever the case, another light cruiser is to be built: this one at Alpha Centauri A Spacedock.

0415

Andor.jpg

The Andorian colonies and Starbases are threatened

The cold war is heating up. Two Klingon fleets are approaching Beta Leonis in Romulan territory. The Romulans have a colony on Beta Prime, but it appears to be unharmed, at least for now. There is little we can do: the First United Fleet is committed already and even if it were available it would be overpowered by the combined fire-power of the Klingons.

0602

Tulgana Prime is back in the news. It had been found that the pollen of plants on the planet contain complex chemical structures that are affecting the colony. A study has been set up to sort it out.

Another public announcement with all the normal faux excitement: a new Tradition has been established. It doesn’t sound all that inspiring, but Standards Measurement Bureau will speed up surveying and help our Science Ships escape threats a little easier, so it is a good thing I suppose.

0727

The USS Brown has completed its mission to Luna and has left for the unsurveyed YZ cell system. Its work on repairing the damage is greatly appreciated by all members of the United Federation of Planets.

The Romulans on Beta Prime have sent out a distress call: the Klingon fleets are in orbit of their planet. No invasion has begun, but it may be that the Klingons are waiting for the arrival of transports carrying assault troops.

USS Clarke reports a strange mountain range on Tau Ceti II. A preliminary review by Captain T’pol finds it is actually an enormous skeleton. She is to investigate further.

11.21

c719ia7c25hz.jpg

Mapping reveals the “mountains” to be a colossal animal skeleton

Captain Tucker has reported that the First Unified Fleet is engaging Klingon warships in the Procyon system! He has identified the enemy as the 3rd Klingon fleet, commanded by Admiral K’Neva.

As humanity held its breath, Starfleet Command thought it wise to provide some background to space warfare, to avoid the disappointment that might be generated by false expectations. An anonymous spokesperson with AI generated voice spoke on the official media channels.

“Forget everything you have seen on holo-vids. Space warfare is not fought in interstellar space by ships that vaporise the enemy with one shot. Nobody can fight in-between systems as all ships enter warp space in order to cross the vast distances. Battles are fought in systems where fleets drop out of warp and prepare to warp again.

And a single shot or even a salvo would never destroy a ship, nor even damage it much. Space ships are designed to endure the vicissitudes of space: bursts of cosmic rays, meteors travelling at almost incomprehensible speeds. They have shields, armour and thick hulls to protect them from natural dangers. War ships are even better defended. And our weapons, powerful as they are, have nothing like the power of nature. In addition, all ships have inbuilt repair systems.

So a space battle is not a clash that is over in seconds or even minutes. It is a long drawn-out affair that can often take days, sometime months, as the opposing fleets grind each other down.

That is why it was a huge shock when the alien vessel at Ross 164 destroyed three frigates in virtually no time. We cannot even begin to understand the weapons capable of such destruction.

The battle with the Klingons will not be over today. Although we do not know the capabilities of their ships, we are confident that they are comparable to ours.

Starfleet Command will keep you posted on developments.”

All my beliefs, based admittedly on the “Star Wars” myths of the last century, have been dispelled. Why is reality always so much more boring?

1205

All exploration ships have been instructed to keep a sharp eye out for Trellium D deposits. We have mastered the Trellium D Distillation process and Treasury is eager to increase our stockpiles of this precious resource. Engineering has selected one of the last of the “low hanging fruit” to be researched: Inertia Manipulation.

Captain Haygarth has made her first non-routine communications. While surveying the Eta Cassiopiae system she has located “Terra Nova”, one of the first non-solar system colonies established. No communications have ever been received from the colony, and no reply has been made to hails from TSC Gann. An inspection from space shows the colony to be intact and an away team has been sent to the surface.

Battle.jpg

A last image of the Battle of Procyon before our fleet made an emergency jump

Bad news from Starfleet Command, thought it could have been worse. Admiral Tucker has ordered a retreat as the strength of the enemy fleet is far beyond that of our own. One Klingon gunboat was destroyed, and all of our ships are safe. But when they will return from their blind jump into warp is not known for sure. It will be far more than a solar year however.

1226

Captain Haygarth reports that Terra Nova appears abandoned. No clue as to what has happened to the colonists. The away team has returned to the “Gann” but the captain and the security officer have remained for a final search.

0101

Part of my duties as Chief Historian is to maintain security of all records, especially of those deemed to be sensitive. I have notified the Council of a particularly concerning breach of that security. The sealed documentation relating to the Eugenics Wars has been accessed by unknown parties. My technical analysts cannot determine exactly what was taken, but the details of the attempt by genetically altered humans to take control of Earth is considered dangerous, and theft of such information is a major worry. As if the war with the Klingon Empire is not enough!

Starfleet has ordered another frigate, but nobody thinks that even a dozen frigates will be enough to halt the Klingon fleets.

0113

As the daily morale boosting broadcasts remind us, life must go on. That includes all work that builds the economy – the only way the United Federation of Planets can defeat the Klingon Empire is to build a much larger fleet, and that will take energy credits. The “Volga”, having claimed Wolf 424a for the Federation, is now constructing a mining station to tap into the energy from the star.

Starfleet Command has received a distress message from the colony on Cajitar IV. The inhabitants are calling for an urgent rescue mission. From what I can gather, this has caused a split in the Command. Some wish to send whatever ships are available, others point out that this colony is the closest we have to Klingon space and any fleet sent would be overwhelmed. No decision has been made, but personally I think the colonists should be looking for any seat available on a ship leaving the area.

0117

The galaxy is full of intelligent life. Another “First Contact”, this time in the Sigma Boötis system. Code named the “Mem Aliens”, a diplomat has been assigned to develop a relationship. Let us hope they are friendly.

0125

Captain Haygarth’s thoroughness has paid off, at least in the sense we can draw a line under the failed colony on Nova Terra. She found a damaged communication log which, when repaired, revealed that an asteroid hit the colony destroying everything needed to sustain life. She gained a lot of experience from her time on Nova Terra, and her story of the “lost colony” has led to a surge in unity across Earth and the colonies.

imagebig .jpg

Recovered from the damaged log: satellite record of the asteroid impact on Nova Terra

0127

I was wrong about Starfleet Command’s response to the Cajitar IV distress call. Or half wrong. No fleet is to be sent, but as the “Enterprise” has fully surveyed the Cavazos system, it is free to take on the mission. It is not a warship, but Captain Archer has shown he possesses heroic qualities of the highest level, so he should be able to soothe the worries of the colonists.

0405

There is such a thing as being too careful. Captain Haygarth and TSC Gann are still in the Eta Cassiopiae system, and inspecting the moon over Terra Nova have found nothing unusual. But the Captain insists she thinks there is something not normal and wants to spend more time on Luna Nova. Starfleet Command has given in to her, but I would have told her to get on with the job.

There are more important things to worry about than vague feelings. Sensors indicate that three Klingon transport fleets are approaching Beta Leonis. It would appear a planetary invasion is planned, and the closest target would be the colony on Cajitar IV.

Screenshot 2024-08-05 195852.jpg

Three Klingon Iup class transports approach Beta Leonis

Our mastery of Astrometric Studies won’t help the colony, nor will the proposed Streamlined Planet Bureaucracy. The sociologists insist both will improve our economy, but that is a long term solution to what is a short term problem.

0411

Captain Archer’s mission is too late. The colony on Cajitar IV has repeated its call for help. It claims it has been abandoned, and this has had a negative effect not only on the feeling of unity across the Federation, but also the amount of influence we have in our region of space. Who can respect a Federation that cannot protect its own citizens?

But while that was bad news, it was not the worst for the day. The Mendes Research station has gone silent. No communications have been logged either in or out. What has caused alarm is that the Mendes station holds all the embryos of the genetically modified humans captured at the end of the Eugenics Wars. Not only that, but it holds a large amount of material about the study of eugenics, some of it ancient texts that have never been digitised.

books2.jpg

Centuries old texts on Eugenics held securely on Mendes Research Station
This is an emergency of the first order, and Commander Erika Hernandez is on her way with the only two ships available: the light cruiser USS Nelson and the frigate USS Crazy Horse. We cannot allow a repeat of the Eugenics Wars!

0424

Things are going from bad to worse! As we struggled to meet the invasion by the Klingons, the Romulan Star Empire has declared war on the Federation. Not as powerful as the Klingons, but still capable doing us immense harm. Their allies, the Garidian Republic, have joined them. Together they have a much more powerful fleet than us.

I have no idea what we will do. The lights are burning all night at Starfleet Command, and at the buildings housing the Council as well. Can their efforts save the Federation from annihilation?

Already the strain on the economy is great. We cannot keep up with the demand for energy, even though “Volga” has finished the new mining station at Wolf 424A. It is to build another at Wolf 424 III, but is it too little too late?

0604

A month of no significant news is probably a good thing: we can increase our stockpiles and our scientific knowledge. But then another worry. The pollen problem on Tulgana Prime is getting worse. Botanists on the planet report that when in the atmosphere, the pollen from the Marin Kharen plant has aphrodisiac properties, with, as one might imagine, devastating effects on productivity. There has been talk of a total ban on the plants, but this might cause even more disruption. The locals want a Science Ship sent to investigate, but it may have to wait. There are many demands on our ships and the war makes surveying more of a priority.

0629

The Andorians are alarmed. A powerful Klingon fleet has entered the Procyon system, location of Anodoria, the Andorian homeworld . Already bombardment of the planet has begun. Starfleet Command has sent a message of support, but nothing practical can be done. We understand some ships retained by the Andorians intend to meet the Klingons, but everyone knows it is a suicide mission.

Screenshot 2024-08-05 200310.jpg

Andoria under attack: civilian casualties must be enormous

0703

One piece of good news among all the gloom. The new colony, Alpha Centauri Tertius, has been established and is building a Frontier Hospital.

It is probably also good news that the Andorian commander Thy’lek Shran has been appointed to lead the 2nd Star Fleet: he has an illustrious record. He is also very aggressive and stubborn in defence, but has only three ships at the moment. Nowhere near enough to challenge the Klingons or even the Romulans. Another frigate is being constructed, but lack of alloys is crippling our fleet expansion.

0721

I will admit I was wrong about Captain Haygarth. Her carefulness and attention to detail has paid off again. Deep in crevices on Luna Nova she discovered some sort of morphogenetic fluid which seems to have independent movement. Not earth-shattering, but it has led to an increase in our knowledge of life forms.

The Mem Aliens, as we still call them, are also assisting us in gaining knowledge, helping us decode their communications.

0920

We have successfully claimed the Aldicarb system, and “Sahara” has orders to exploit the various sources of energy in the system. That may take some time.

0927

Having completed the survey of the Tau Ceti system, Captain T’Pol has been granted permission to research the giant skeleton on Tau Ceti II.

Inertia Manipulation does not sound exciting, but our engineering departments claim it will open doorways to a wide range of new developments. Of the several projects vying for funding however, the relatively boring Magnesite Mining got approval. I have been told that this was because of a push by Treasury. It wants to start selling our various stockpiles on the open market to get funds to buy allows, and sees Magnesite as a potential sales opportunity.

Crystalline structure of magnesite and magnesite II: a valuable commodity in either form

1026

We can forget the “Mem Aliens”: they are now known as the Saurian League. Our diplomatic handling of this First Contact has rewarded us with a large amount of influence.

1105

Once again the beleaguered colony on Capita IV has appealed for help in vain. No ships have arrived: the Klingon force prevents entry. Our reputation drops sharply, and other colonists question our commitment to the Federation as a whole.

The “Franklin” is off to Tulgana to investigate this problem with flowers and pollen. Let us hope that Captain Suzuki and his crew are resistant to the aphrodisiac properties of the Marin Kharen. We must find a way to deal with this debilitating reaction to the pollen or the colony may have to be abandoned.

download.jpg

A digital copy of this ancient text has been sent to Captain Suzuki to aid his investigation: every little helps

“Volga” is an example to the entire Starfleet. Without fuss or plaudits, it continues to do the essential work of claiming systems and building mining stations. Energy credits are now flowing from Wolf 424 III, and soon we will have a Starbase in the Tau Ceti system. That is how we will beat the Klingons and the Romulans – by peaceful expansion and growth!

The Saurian League believes in us. They have requested permission to build an embassy here on Earth. Would they do that if they expected the Unified Federation of Planets to be destroyed?

12.04

The minds of our best physicists have delivered a welcome addition to Starfleet’s armoury. Phase Modulated Particle Weaponry will not win the wars, but it will give our ships a bit more power, and perhaps make our enemies a little more cautious. There was a strong push to start researching Burst Phasers, but our limited research capacity would mean this would take years to provide any useful result. Instead we will look into Advanced Field Manipulation. Not as glamorous, but able to be completed in less than a year.

12.22

The Klingons have launched an attack on the Federation itself. The Starbase at Beta Antares has reported that the Klingon 1st Fleet has opened fire. Commander Vekna, with 2 Raptors, 2 Birds of Prey, 2 Strike ships and 5 Gunboats, has called on the garrison to surrender. The situation is hopeless, but the defenders have vowed to keep fighting until the shields are breached.

End.jpg

The Klingons advance, almost without resistance

That was the last important event of the year. The Federation is largely unharmed, but can that last for long with two powerful nations at war with us?

Best see if the saurians will help you in the war if not I think this will lead to a game over maybe? As far as I know if u become a vassal in a war u lose the game right or am I wrong?
According to the information in "Contacts"., the Saurian League is "pathetic"., so not much hope of assistance from them. I think you are right that if I become a vassal that it is game over. But in any case, Humanity will not bow before the Klingons! We will fight to the last!

Although things look grim, I think that ship for ship I can match the Klingons, though I cannot get their ship details. Not sure of the Romulans, but while the Klingons are "overwhelming" the Romulans are merely "equivalent". But there is a lot of space between the advancing Klingons and the bulk of Federation planets. The loss of the Andorans is not critical. I am putting my trust in a strong economy and better technology. So growing my fleet and constant upgrades. As well as upgrading Star Bases when possible.

I am only a few years ahead in playing, so I don't know how it will end, but no spoilers anyway.

“Sahara” plods on, ignoring the tumult. Singlehandedly, its crew are attempting to solve our energy credit shortage. Now building its second mining station in the Aldicarb system.

0112

We have been informed by the Denoblan Unity that they have guaranteed the independence of the Kobilad Remnant. As we have no idea who this “Remnant” is, and the Denoblans have an even smaller fleet than the Federation, we have simply thanked them for the information and sworn to respect their decision.

0204

A last message from Beta Antares: the Klingons have captured the Star Base.

0304

Commander Enrika Hernandez and her two ships have arrived at the Mendes Research Station. The derelict structure shows signs of an attack, and several bodies are floating in space nearby. The Star Base however is intact.

Reseea.jpg

Mendes Research Station: abandoned and derelict after the Augment attack

Barely had that message been transmitted when a hostile fleet arrived: eight Birds of Prey commanded by the Augment Ayane Amaro. These are stolen ships, seized by Augment forces.

A message is sent immediately to the Star Base: begin to assemble a Defence Pod. We have plenty of Duralium Plating and the additional fusion torpedoes and phase pulse cannon may be critical in defeating the Augments. Combat decisions are left to Commander Hernandez.

0420

Captain T’Pol has amazing news: the giant skeleton on Tau Ceti IV is not some wild animal but an organic spaceship! Evidence has been found that it had a crew comprising three different species. The remains will be of interest to our sociologists and our engineers. T’Pol herself has gained a lot of experience from overseeing this investigation.

7986431_orig.jpg

The engineering design crew of the USS Clarke think that the organic spacecraft may have looked like this

The Cajitar system has been captured by the Klingons. That is the only conclusion to be drawn from the total lack of response to our communications.

Slightly better news from Mendes. Commander Hernandez reports that one of the enemy ships has been destroyed. The “Crazy Horse” has had to disengage however, as its armour has been destroyed. It will hopefully rejoin the battle when it has repaired the damage.

0504

“Sahara” continues work in the Aldicarb system, heading for the asteroid belt to exploit the energy resources of TD-1-044.

A short message from Mendes: another Augment ship destroyed. The armour of the USS Nelson has taken damage, but the vessel is still well within safety limits and its hull is intact. Even better, the shuttle pod on the Star Base is now in operation, aiding in the battle when enemy ships come in range.

0522

Captain Jhamel (USS Shalakai) has discovered a strange source of chronitron particles in the vicinity of 70 Ophiuchi VI. She will investigate and get back to Star Fleet Command.

More good news from Commander Hernandez. Three Birds of Prey have been eliminated, leaving just five to deal with.

0601

Vega Prime has been colonised by a human settlers. As is now standard practice, a Frontier Hospital is being erected.

Another big display has been put on for the announcement of a new Tradition. In accordance with our current political situation, it has a military nature: Ships of the Line. That has given some assistance to our Physics research teams, in that they now have access to the Advanced Scientific Method.

240_F_267955326_zuMwbGcOG8755RJVB0CkmWTQCOHG4b4u.jpg

To lift morale, the producers of the “Ships of the Line” performance delved back into naval history.

I have to say though that despite the impressive “son et lumière” display that accompanied the announcement, that many of the dignitaries and most of those in the crowd were subdued. The lack of any progress in the war is having an impact on morale, and war weariness is increasing.

0618

Only four Birds of Prey remain in the Mendes system, though the “Nelson” has taken more damage.

0706

Although nobody dares say it, it looks as though we may have defeated the Augment fleet. Only two enemy ships are left capable of fighting, and Commander Hernandez reports that the damage control parties on the “Nelson” have stabilised the loss of armour protection.

0715

The investigation into the effects of the Marin Kharen flowers has made some disturbing findings. Productivity of the affected workers has plummeted and the net result is a 15% loss of resource generation. Can it all be due to the pollen? Experts in labour studies have been ordered to carry out more detailed research.

0723

One enemy ship remains in the Mendes system. The rumour is that President Nathan Samuels has already written and recorded his victory speech and is waiting for the OK to broadcast.

0802

With Streamlined Planetary Bureaucracy, we can now take advantage of the benefits that accrue to regional capitals. Helpful, but not in the fight against the Klingons and the Romulans. We should get better assistance from the next sociological project: Interstellar Campaigns.

0803

At last! The Battle of Mendes is over, and we have won! Facing incredible odds, Commander Hernandez has destroyed the enemy fleet. USS Clarke has been sent to Mendes to check what if any information remains at large, while the First Fleet (called that to differentiate it from the multi-species First United Fleet that is still missing after its emergency warp) is on its way back to Earth for refit and repair. And, no doubt, to the adulation of the population. We desperately needed good news from space, with the Klingons moving inexorably towards us.

0820

The universe still manages to surprise us, even scientists like the Aenar Captain Jhamel who has seen a lot in her 34 years. Tracking down the source of the chronitron particles the “Shalakai” found a small ship in orbit of 70 Ophiuchi IV. Sensors could not penetrate its hull but before Captain Jhamel could consider her next steps, a voice asked her to move slightly to the right. She did so, and a human appeared on the bridge!

Jhamel.jpg

Captain Jhamel acquitted herself well with the time traveller

This person identified herself as Professor Dai Pan, a visitor from 200 years in the future. She asked politely if she could study the Shalakai and was granted permission to do so. Shortly afterwards she beamed back to her ship which just vanished in a cloud of chronitron particles. Data collected will be useful in our physics research, but Captain Jhamel has returned to her survey work: there is nothing more to investigate.

Starfleet Command has far more pressing matters on hand. The colony on Cajitar IV has been able to send a last panic-stricken message. A huge Klingon force is in orbit. The enemy does not even bother to hide its strength nor its identity. The information provided is a shock to anyone who contemplated a direct confrontation with the Klingons.

From the various interfleet communications, the tiny military force on Cajitar IV has learnt the enemy comprises the following 5 fleets:

House of Antaak: 22 Gunboats

House of Duras: 2 Raptors, 2 Strike Ships, 2 Birds of Prey, 5 Gunboats

House of Mogh: 3 Raptors, 2 Strike Ships, 2 Birds of Prey, 9 Gunboats

House of M’Rek: 2 Raptors, 1 Strike Ship, 3 Birds of Prey, 35 Gunboats

Klingon Empire: 2 Raptors, 5 Birds of Prey, 25 Gunboats

Gunboatclass.jpg

A Klingon G2 Gunboat: the smallest and oldest ship in the enemy fleet, but so numerous they pose a deadly threat

I happened to be present when this information reached Starfleet, and the effect it had was alarming. Senior officers turned pale and shoulders slumped. Dealing with one of those fleets would be hard enough for the whole of Starfleet Command. And this was just the force the Klingons sent to one minor system! Who knows what their total strength is?

A glance at our fleet display holomap revealed our strength: just 9 ships in total.

All present were warned that this news could not be made public. Anyone could see why: the citizens of the Federation would be terrified.

A couple of junior officers started to mention the word “surrender” but they were sharply rebuked. Any such decision was a matter for the Council of the United Federation of Planets. Starfleet Command obeyed orders from the elected representatives of the member species. It would do its duty.

Despite that final statement I left the building feeling devastated. How can we possible withstand such a force? And with the Romulans probably already on their way to attack us as well? Did this spell the end of the Federation? Would the human race end as Klingon serfs?

0906

It took nearly a month for sufficient alloys to be produced to begin the construction of another light cruiser. That did not cheer me up. What good is one more ship against the power of the Klingons?

Not even news from the indefatigable “Sahara” broke my despondency. Another Mining Station, and soon another Research Station. What did it matter if it would be owned by our Klingon masters?

The Administration Complex has been upgraded to a Regional Capital, and despite my gloom the employees both there and in the Starfleet buildings seem hard at work. Perhaps there is some hope. They do not seem to share my despondency.

starfleet-command-2153-theexpanse.jpg

Late at night, Starfleet Command building is lit up as staff work on a solution to the Klingon threat

0911

Scouts and hidden sensor arrays have detected a small Klingon fleet (5 Strike Ships) heading for the Andorian home system, Procyon. Could this be a chance for an ambush? Or is it a trap, designed to lure out our ships?

0921

Tau Ceti is now officially part of Federation territory, not that that seems to worry anyone else in the galaxy. “Volga” is to build a Research Station over Tau Ceti II to tap into the sociological and engineering knowledge we discovered.

I noted a Treasury memo authorising the release of a large quantity of Duranium plates. The Starbases at Whittacker, Gerber and DX Cancri are to be equipped with Defence Pods. We will not give up the Andoran planets without at least some resistance.

Andoran.jpg

Prior to the creation of the United Federation of Planets, this was Andoran territory.

0930

It all seems inconsequential, but Captain Suzuki has sent another report on the Marin Kharen plants on Tulgana. They are very interesting, but of no economic value. Studying the effects on the locals has generated a huge amount of sociological knowledge, and the captain has recommended an intensive labour study on Tulgana Prime.

I found the latest documentation from Treasury far more interesting. A large proportion of our surplus supplies and food has been sold in the open market, and the energy credits earned (less the exorbitant agents’ fees) used to purchase metal alloys. Not a large amount, but the equivalent to almost 2 years’ production.

1020

It was a good thing we did not send ships to Andora. Another Klingon fleet has been spotted in the region: it looks as though it was a trap.

Some of our costly alloys are to be used to build another frigate. I was not sure of the wisdom of this: our frigates have not lasted long in battle. Starfleet Command believes that our scientific advances have made the ships more robust and more capable of delivering damage. We must wait and see.

1027

More diplomatic niceties as the Denobulans now inform us they have revoked their guarantee of independence of the Kobliad Remnant.

Nobody cared about that, not when Captain Archer blundered into the entire 3rd Klingon Fleet! He had been attempting to respond to the distress call from the colony on Cajitar IV and did not have the sense to realise the region was swarming with enemy ships.

The “Enterprise” is, strictly speaking, in neutral space, in the UV Ceti system which is in the territory of the Nausicaan Tribes. But the Klingons don’t respect any boundaries, and now Captain Archer faces 2 Raptors, 5 Birds of Prey and 25 Gunboats. His only hope is an emergency warp – if he has the time to do so.

More flower nonsense! As we wait anxiously to find whether the armour of the “Enterprise” can protect it long enough to engage warp, Captain Suzuki interrupts to tell us that he has introduced a regime on Tulgana that allows the workers to access the flowers they desire. Productivity is up, sociological knowledge is up. Hopefully that is the end of his botanic research project.

1000_F_781458592_nMAdJTxoNSclfQA3bFfaRcsXo6af1jGf.jpg

A factory worker on Tulgana Prime surrounded by flowers: productivity is up

1108

Great news – “Enterprise” has survived. Its whereabouts not really known, but it should be back in normal space in about 4 months.

In view of the danger from the Klingons, the USS Franklin has been ordered to return closer to Earth. It is to survey Kappa Fornacis II.

1215

Another system lost. This time it was the turn of D’Ryb J. To be honest, I am surprised the Klingons did not take it earlier. It was so close to their territory that no attempt was made to hold it.

The year ends with “Shalakai” moving from 70 Ophiuchi to Lolande 25372. Our science ships are not venturing too far away, not with the risk of a Romulan or Klingon fleet arriving. Not all have the ability to warp as quickly as Captain Archer and the “Enterprise”.

Another year begins with the realisation that we have been too complacent for too long. While we were sending out colony ships and developing our settlements, the Klingons were assembling a huge navy. The enemy is still a long way from Earth, but we can still do nothing to slow them, let alone stop them.

Final.jpg

Places in the news in the last six months: not many of the stories were positive

Next year could be vital.

My apologies for the long commenting hiatus.

Is the Coalition of Planets a separate organization within the UFP? How does that work? It seems like it was necessary, to be fair, given that the Federation was powerless to stop a war between Vulcan and Andor, two of its founding members.

It's nice to see Starfleet form.

These hostile First Contacts are worrying...

How did someone get to Luna and attack it without anyone noticing? Has someone invented cloaking tech?

The war against the Klingons and the Romulans isn't going well. Can the Federation pull off a miracle? Congrats on defeating the Augments, though.

NP about late: RL always interferes.

I think it is a separate grouping. All of Humanity is in the UFP, but not all Andor or Vulcan or Tellar. They also seem to have some ships of their own. I'll try to include a starmap next post to show the difference.

Starfleet seems mainly cosmetic atm, but I hope it will bring benefits. I need some. I could handle the Romulans pretty easily, but wasn't prepared for the Klingons. I only had Star Bases built at a few systems, and the Posts are easily overwhelmed. The Klingon Houses and the Imperial Fleet appears to be about 15k strength in total, and Star Fleet has about 4k.

The next post will show how The Council and Starfleet Command react. Maybe a day or two.

Those lights burning at all hours in the Administration and Starfleet Command buildings were definitely a sign that thousands of dedicated individuals were designing a means of, if not defeating, at least slowing the Klingon advance. While the New Year celebrations were taking place (a little subdued because of the war), our leaders and our finest minds were meeting to determine the fate of the United Federation Planets.

Today I was provided with the minutes of that meeting, and a copy of “Operation Slowdown”, the plan to save us from ending as Klingon vassals.

The meeting opened with the President, Nathan Samuels, setting out the current position. The Klingons have swept through the Andorian region, capturing multiple systems, including those containing five colonies and the Andorian homeworld. Although they have not as yet sent in ground troops, that is only a matter of time.

At their current rate of progress, they will completely overrun us in four to five years.

Start.jpg

The known galaxy, its occupants and the rapidly advancing Klingon threat

The Romulans are an annoyance, but not a real threat, and could be ignored for now.

Minister of Defence, Mario Galvani, spoke next, Starfleet Command having indicated his comments were supported by the armed forces. He advised that our fleet cannot defeat the Klingons. In fact, the Klingons could wipe out Starfleet with a fraction of its forces. Confronting them head on would only lead to a multitude of heroic deaths.

According to V’Latek, Minister for Research, we know little about the Klingon’s technology, other than it appears to be superior to ours. Our own progress is steady, but there is no hope of a breakthrough that could alter the balance of power.

Finally the Minister of State added a few words. Maxwell Forrest, a veteran himself, pledged total co-operation with the decision of the Council. His plans, and those of his bureaucracy and the Treasury, would be put aside for the foreseeable future. All resources would be available for the war effort.

There followed a lot of discussion, but it is obvious that everyone, the sector and planetary governors, the lead scientists and the fleet commanders were agreed. The Klingons could not be stopped, but they might be able to be slowed. Perhaps slowed sufficiently for some sort of status quo peace agreement to be made.

To achieve this, we would immediately begin a process of upgrading every Space Station in a system containing one of our colonies to Starbase level, with every possible offensive and defensive modification. Starfleet assets would be kept in reserve, ready to meet any Romulan incursion but also, should the opportunity arise, to attack an isolated Klingon fleet. (The Commander of 1st Starfleet, Charles “Trip” Tucker III, stated this was unlikely: the Klingons had been extremely disciplined to date. While their fleets are split according the powerful “Houses” that run the Klingon Empire, they have shown none of their customary rivalry).

detained_147_large.jpg

Commander Tucker addresses the Council from the bridge of the cruiser VVS Seleya, flagship of 1st Starfleet

To meet the costs of the massive construction project, Treasury would sell a large part of our strategic minerals reserves. (The situation must be critical: building those stockpiles has been its primary object for decades).

This plan would inevitably lead to most of Andoran space being occupied, and probably Vulcan territory as well. Nevertheless, the representatives of those species endorsed “Slowdown”. Their individual navies were even less able than Starfleet to halt the Klingons.

Along with the top secret minutes and military orders, there was a bundle of sales and purchase agreements. Standard stuff, apart from the colossal amounts. Vast quantities of Dilithium, Kemocite, Trellium D, Magnesite and Deuterium had been sold, and the energy credits obtained used to buy Alloys.

1626696521.51365_Aluminum-Alloy-Ingot-Adc-12---Aluminium-Ingot-ADC-12-_0_0.jpg

Eagerly awaited deliveries of Alloys destined for the war effort

Then was another bundle, this time of construction contracts. The Space Stations at DX Cancri, P’Jem, Tulgana and Sirius are to be upgraded to Starbase I level. Starbase Alpha Lyra is to replace one of its naval depots with Armour Plating, and Alpha Centauri is to instal not only Armour Plating but also a Material Processing Centre.

The last contract indicated that there is already an intention to build Starfleet: it will generate Alloys. That would also explain the order for another Constructor Ship to be built.

0105

As if to rub in our weakness, our failure to respond to the last distress calls from Cajitar brought about a further drop in unity. But what could we do? The public does not, must not, know the true position.

0119

All Science and Construction ships have been instructed that future operations must be directed, where possible, to the war effort, whether increasing production or research. The “Volga” has finished a Research Station at Tau Ceti II which will boost both Engineering and Social knowledge and is now to build an Energy Collection Station around the main star of the system. At almost the same time, a new colony was established in Tau Ceti Prime.

0226

Some light relief was provided by the “on again, off again” Denobulan – Kobliad relationship. They have told us that the guarantee of independence has been reinstated.

0311

After a few months of relative calm, another attack has begun. A Klingon Empire fleet of 2 Raptors, 5 Birds of Prey and 24 Gunboats has arrived at the Kapteyn’s Star system, where an Andoran/Aenar colony acts as a breadbasket for their region.

0403

The Council has announced a new agenda: Open Doors. We desperately need population growth if we are to ever challenge the Klingons, and immigration is one way to achieve this.

Two new edicts were also announced. Production Targets have been set to increase productivity, while the instruction to Fortify the Borders will reduce the cost of fortifications.

0407

Physics research will be assisted by a Research Station orbiting Capella Aa, and the “Sahara” is heading for Alpha IVB in the Sirius system. There is a very rich deposit of Tallonian crystals there.

Fighting continues at Kapteyn’s Star with losses about equal: a Gun Boat for a Defence Pod. Disturbingly, long range sensors have picked up another, even larger Klingon fleet approaching Procyon. That is just one warp jump from the battle.

KS 2.jpg

The Klingons resume their advance

Our scientists are obeying orders. The Tellarite Skallaar, commanding VSS Sh’kyr, has located an anomaly at Struve 2398 VI. An asteroid is orbiting the planet in an extraordinarily stable manner. He will leave it until he has completed his current survey mission: there are numerous valuable resources in the system and we need to claim it and then exploit them.

With a colony established at Tau Ceti Prime, “Slow Down” requires a Star Base in the system, and upgrading the Space Station has begun. “Volga” is still working nearby, finishing the Energy Collector and moving to Tau Ceti IV to tap into the Social knowledge available.

0516

The never-ending saga of the Mharin Kharin flowers and their aphrodisiac pollen continues. Fresh studies have shown that the inhabitants of Tulgan Prime are extremely reluctant to migrate. It is not yet proven to be the plants that cause this, but what else could it be?

The “Enterprise” has finally returned and has been dispatched to survey Santoyo. That is a long way from the front line. Let us hope Captain Archer does not find a way to get into more trouble.

Having covered the cost of Phase I of “Slow Down”, Treasury has approved the construction of a series of ships to replace all those lost to date. A big investment, but nowhere near enough to change the odds.

Our ability to resist the Klingons has been increased by our study of Interstellar Campaigns. Focus now will be on improving population growth by researching Frontier Medicine.

0612

The language in the corridors of Starfleet Command is appalling, but understandable. With work on the conversion of Whittaker Space Station still almost a year from completion, a Klingon fleet has attacked it. Although small by Klingon standards, only 6 Raptors, it is far too much for the Station to withstand. 1st Starfleet has been urgently dispatched to Gerber in the hope it can arrive in time to intervene, but it is more of a gesture of support than anything real.

Whittaker.jpg

Its improved defences nowhere near finished, Whittaker Space Station is outmatched

0620

The Saurian League has informed us that it is to join something called the “Confederated Interlinked Systems”, whatever that it. This could be interesting. Might we get to hear about some group that could assist in our wars?

Skalaar, the Tellarite commanding a Vulcan science ship, has completed his studies into Computing II. Good for him, but it won’t speed up his survey of Struve 2398.

The inhabitants of Alpha Centauri Tertius have apparently been looking skywards, perhaps on the look out for Klingon invaders. More usefully, they have observed that one of their three moons, New Montana B, seems to be made of a different material. The report has been noted, and an investigation should begin shortly, perhaps when the Frontier Medicine project is complete.

d2l0r2v5we381.jpg

Observations by the colonists on Alpha Centauri Tertius indicate one moon is made of a different material to the other two.

0702

Advanced Shield Manipulation will, I am reliably informed, make our ships far more able to take punishment, though perhaps not immediately. Next: Secondary Plasmodyne Relays, which will hopefully make our weapons more effective.

In a move that should have taken place some time ago, Gustavo Giordano has been sent undercover to spy on the Klingons, with Miroslav Vasiliev to do the same to the Romulans. Better late than never, but one has to wonder at the incompetence of those in charge of our espionage and diplomacy agencies.

SUbhopUlkbcsgj8KUxL6ZOAiQc7AwvJVnkuok5154Io.jpg

Gustavo Giordano midway through modifying his appearance in order to spy on the Klingons.

The newly completed Construction Ship USS Pegasus Bay has its first task. It is one that will take a considerable time: to build the Utopia Planitia Shipyards on Mars.

It was planned to upgrade the “Enterprise” at this time, but lack of Alloys has forced us to delay the work for a year. At least the Alpha Centauri A Star Base Materials Processing Centre is now in operation, so production of these vital war resources will increase.

0805

Sad news, even if it was known from the start that the battle was impossible to win. Whittaker Station has been captured. To add to that, Kapteyn’s Star Star Base reports the arrival of a House of M’Rek fleet, adding 3 Raptors and 4 incredibly powerful Strike Ships to the attacking force. (It also reports that the original force has been reduced by 2 Raptors and 14 Gunboats: not all destroyed, but at least removed from combat).

Better news from Vega Star Base. They have installed the additional Armour Plating and are now in the process of building 4 Shuttle Pods.

More trouble from Tulgana Prime. The local officials, supposed to be controlling the Mharin Kharin problem, claim to be having “transmission” issues. The Minister of State has had enough and is sending an administrative task force to sort them out.

0904

The demand for Duranium Plates for defensive structures is depleting our stores. Having completed the Tau Ceti IV Research Station, “Sahara” is off to exploit the deposits of Duranium on the asteroid E-9-RH45.

1011

A last message from Kapteyn’s Star. The Klingons have boarded the Star Base and cannot be stopped. The garrison will fight to the death – it is rumoured the Klingons do not take prisoners. With some pride, they claim to have confirmed the destruction of 16 Gunboats and 2 Raptors.

TSC Gann has finally completed its survey of Eta Cassiopiae and is on its way to YZ Ceti. For some reason this has reminded the Minister of Research about the mysterious moon of Alpha Centauri Tertius, and he has ordered work on Frontier Medicine to halt while it is investigated.

It took a long time for the “Clarke” to reach Mendes, the scene of the battle with the Augment Fleet, but when T’Pol arrived she was quick to locate amongst the debris in space some salvageable computer cores. These contained enough data to determine that the Augments considered themselves heirs of the 20th Century Khan Noonien Singh. They aimed to create an Augment Empire, enslaving humanity. A disaster averted just in time. A small amount of minerals was recovered, as well as some useful bits of information. T’Pol will now move to the nearby Plank system, which contains a dozen planets and satellites.

images-of-space-debris.jpg

Searching the post battle debris was a challenge

Nothing significant for the rest of the year. War exhaustion is increasing, despite the calming effect of the Interstellar Campaigns research. The Klingons are not on the move, and we have neither heard nor seen anything of the Romulans. The valiant defence of the Kapteyn’s Star system has given Starfleet some confidence that our border defences can slow down the invasion. But we must wait and see.

End.jpg

“In the news”: places that have featured in important events in the past 12 months (those in red have fallen to the Klingons).

A Star Trek AAR, sign me up! The Federation is facing quite the early challenge, having to fight the Romulans and the Klingons at the same time so soon after its inception. Fortunately the distance involved seems to be helping against the former. Here's hoping that Starfleet can rally and liberate the Andorians before a peace is forced.

At the risk of giving a spoiler, I am currently up to Year 2175, so they survive at least that long. But it is pretty hard to survive when the Klingons are so much more powerful. Having played Stellaris vanilla quite a bit, I m not used to being on the defensive so early. I had a nice quiet period of expansion and exploration in mind, which is why I was so unprepared.

Well if you fail this aar I would not mind a gundam ,a transformers or a Star Wars new dawn aar
Always a possibility, but I haven't given up yet. I believe that if I can get the Klingons up to 100$ War Exhaustion that I can force a Status Quo. ATM that would cost me about 5 systems, but would be worthwhile for 10 years of peace to build up. I am still trying to work out how the Klingon economy can afford these huge fleets.

Agreed. Things certainly aren't going well, but it doesn't look like Game Over levels of hopelessness just yet. Losing those systems would hurt, but a lot can change in 10 years, and suffering setbacks can make for great storytelling!

Well the setbacks are not a problem - plenty of them. Have to see about the story telling!

0101

It was during a ceremony honouring Mario Galvani, the Minister of Defence for his steadfast adherence to principles that the first news of the Romulan attack arrived. He left immediately, aides bringing him up to date as he sprinted for his office.

The Romulans have caught Starfleet Command napping. They have struck at the Imprek system, on the other side of our territory to the Klingons and far away from their own bases. Starfleet 1 has been urgently recalled to Earth in case this is the prelude for an assault on our central zone.

A fresh supply of Duranium Plating from Tau Ceti is on its way to replenish our stocks, and “Volga” is to claim Eta Cassiopiae.

The state of the known galaxy at the start of 2173

0122

Cambridge University, which has provided so many of our gifted scientists, will benefit from the demand for new and better technology to use against our enemies. It will be greatly increased in size and capability, generating new knowledge at a faster rate.

slide-6.jpg

Cambridge University: a source of knowledge and inspiration for centuries

0202

Not that progress is slow. Far from it. Two research projects were successfully completed this day. Our Physicists have handed over their design of a Secondary Plasmadyne Relay, while the Engineers have developed a method for Magnesite Refining. The former are to assist our espionage activities with work on Encryption Protocols, while the later will continue to help replace our sold mineral stockpiles with Kemocite Refining. Neither should take too long.

0303

Starfleet 1 is not even half way home, and the word is that Imprek has fallen to the Romulans. We need to be able to react faster.

0318

Speed is not enough however to deal with the Klingons. No less than five fleets have entered the DX Cancri System, where contractors are still at work on the Space Station upgrade. The enemy force is for all intents and purposes, invincible. They do not bother to mask their communications, so confident are they of success, and we can identify individual ships. The fleets are summarised as:

House of Duras: 2 Raptors, 2 Strike Ships, 2 Birds of Prey, 5 Gunboats

House of Antaak: 4 Birds of Prey, 22 Gunboats

House of Mogh: 3 Raptors, 2 Strike Ships, 2 Birds of Prey, 9 Gunboats

House of M’Rek: 2 Raptors, 1 Strike Ship, 3 Birds of Prey, 35 Gunboats

Klingon Empire: 6 Raptors

There is nothing we can do to help.

As the garrison of the Space Station (and the unfortunate contractors) prepare for death, more annoyance from Tulgana Prime. The Administration team we sent has become addicted to the damn Mharin Kharin flowers and is useless. The Minister of State, Maxwell Forrest, is infuriated, and has ordered that the planet be administered remotely, from Earth.

0410

DX Cancri is gone. It took out just one gunboat before being overwhelmed. Another two months and it would have been better armed, but even so it could not have held off a foe that numerous. I hope the sacrifice of its defenders has bought us enough time to do better in future.

Our allies, the Tellarites, are defending their home planet against a combined Romulan/Garidian task force. The Garidian Republic has 3 Remote Interceptors and 4 Birds of Prey while the Romulans have 6 Remote Interceptors and 3 Birds of Prey. The Tellar Starbase is well fortified, but it will be a tough fight for them.

Bop22rom.jpg

Our allies sent us information on the Romulan Bird of Prey warships

0515

Although it delayed our study of Frontier Medicine, the decision to pay attention to the moon-gazing settlers of Alpha Centauri Tertius was worth it. Our findings indicate that the unusual second moon once orbited another planet, a planet that exploded in a burst of dark matter. We cannot determine whether this was a weapon of some sort or an experiment that went wrong. The moon was blasted away and later was trapped by AC Tertius. A large amount of useful engineering data was gathered.

It would appear that the Romulans their allies do not have any desire for a fight: after what was hardly a feint attack they have withdrawn from the Tellarites in 61 Cygni.

0605

Contractors report that all three Space Station upgrades (P’Jem, Sirius and Tulgana) have been completed. Approval has been given for the installation of both Armour Plate and Energy Weapons Arrays on all three.

YZ Ceti is now completely surveyed, and Captain Atharv Namboodiri has been given permission to return to YZ Ceti IV to investigate what appears to be a massive impact crater.

vredefort-crater.jpg

One can see why Captain Namboodiri wants to investigate this crater pattern

0712

Although we have expected it for some time, it was still disturbing to hear the garbled last words of the Vulcan 10th Planetary Guard at the Paan Mokar colony in the DX Cancri System. The Klingons again took no chances, landing so many assault units that resistance was futile.

Some slightly better news at Earth. Captain Archer has been instructed that when the survey of the Santoyo system is complete, he is to return with “Enterprise” for a complete refit. Our ship construction teams assure us that the new ship will be match for anything in the galaxy. Looking at the requests for materials I would hope so. We could build a frigate for the cost of this refit!

On top of that, a colony ship, USS Brazil, has set off for Tau Ceti Prime. A lot of weeping relatives waving: these are perilous times to start a new colony.

0827

Captain Nambooridini completed his investigation of the crater on YZ Ceti in no time at all! It is an ancient meteor impact site that was mined long ago. Even though the richest deposits are gone, it is still worth mining the rest. But the work of the USS Browne is done: it is off to survey the Muir system.

0927

Our researchers did state that it would not take long to complete their new projects, and they are true to their word. Both the Encryption Protocols and Kemocite Refining reports have been signed off and work is underway on Decryption Protocols and what the experts are calling the “Perfected Spatial Torpedo”. That has got Starfleet Command interested.

Another Starbase ready, this time the one protecting Tau Ceti system. With the USS Brazil already on its way, that will make the would-be colonists feel a little less anxious. As funds have been released for the now standard Armour Plating and Energy Weapon Array, they will feel even better in a few months.

0923

The survey of Struve 2398 took Captain Skalaar a fair while, as there was a lot of sub-light travel involved. Now it is done, he is free to return to the 6th planet to investigate the asteroid that is in an unusually stable orbit around it.

Also taking a long time, due to the delay caused by the “odd moon” project, was the development of a “Frontier Medicine” package. But it is now ready, and hopefully soon its recommendations can be implemented. They should lead to a much-needed boost in population growth. The new Genome Mapping will help in a different way: longer life, especially for those in important positions.

Genome mapping: it promises longevity and better health

Extraction of the rich Tallonite Crystal deposit on Alpha IVB in the Sirius system is now underway. “Sahara” has the long trip to Struve 2398 ahead of it. There are even richer deuterium deposits in that system and the Council wants them for the war effort.

1128

A Space Station is now orbiting Achird in the Eta Cassiopiae system, marking it as the territory of the United Federation of Planets. Volga is to build a mining station over the star as well, given it has energy available to tap.

Starfleet 1 has left for Imprek – we will recover our space station and clear out any Romulans hanging about.

In the news in 2173: the Klingons still advance, but more slowly, and the Romulans knife us in the back

Another year without a victory against the Klingons, but only one system and one colony lost. Not good, but not as bad as it has been, and not as bad as it could have been. It looks as though the Klingons have slowed their advance, and have become more cautious. A look at the map of recent events shows little activity on the front line, with most of our efforts being made to boost the economy. We shall see if it works.

Poor Andorians.

Why didn't some desperate mad scientist propose using the Mharin Kharin flowers on the Klingons to impede their war effort?

The Romulan attack is not great, but maybe a few visible victories over them will lower the panic about the Klingon offensive...

No way are we giving the Klingons an aphrodisiac! They already outnumber us!

Unfortunately war exhaustion is measured separately. The public could be rioting soon.

Some species still co-operate. The Benzarian Commonwealth has applied for and been accepted into the Interspecies Medical Exchange.

0104

The Vulcans retain a navy of their own, outside Starfleet, and two destroyers and two Patrol Frigates are on their way to challenge the Klingons at DX Cancri. Starfleet Command rates their chances of success at about nil, but we cannot order them to do nothing.

D2C_quarter_view.jpg

A Vulcan D’Kyr Class warship: considered almost obsolete by the Vulcans, it is more powerful than anything we possess

The Alpha Centauri Starbase has its Materials Processing Unit churning out alloys as fast as it can, so can deploy the construction crews to install 4 more Shuttlepods.

0123

The Minister of State has had enough of the addicted Tulganan colonists. With the government of the settlement now on Earth, it has been decided that the Mharin Kharin plants will be suppressed from all residential areas.

0206

“Enterprise” is warping to Earth for its refit, but Captain Archer and the crew will miss the latest celebration of Tradition. This time the theme is “Getting from There to Here” and the organisers promise an “uplifting experience”. I think that means loud music and fireworks.

Drone-Fireworks-are-Lighting-Up-the-Skies.jpg

Above the ancient Sydney Harbour Bridge, the “Enterprise” firework display is a crowd pleaser

0211

As Earth recovers from the Traditional hangovers, our Andorian allies are fighting for their lives on Alrond. We heard that the 14th Planetary Guards had been badly mauled and were withdrawing, but that the 8th and 12th were holding firm.

The mystery of the unusual asteroid in a perfect orbit around Struve 2398 VI has been solved: it was purposely towed there. Admittedly we don’t know why or by whom, but at least we will get some benefit for the time spent investigating. Captain Skalaar has identified the remains of massive engines and braking thrusters on the surface and believes our engineers will learn a lot from them. The Sh’Kyr is now leaving for the Roundtree system.

While “Volga” was completing the construction of a mining station over Achird, the secondary star in the Eta Cassiopiae system, on Earth it was being decided that the third planet of that star, Terra Nova, would be our next colony. A colony ship is being constructed and the “Volga” has moved to the moon of that planet to build another mining station. Treasury officials complain that we need still more of everything!

d400c93925d7f76d8c2ad99d71a403e1.jpg

Building a colony ship will take almost a year and is an enormous investment

0324

All communications have been lost with the colony on Alrond. The Klingons claim they completely control the Kapteyn’s Star system, and we must assume that the gallant defenders have been slaughtered.

With the addition of Decryption Protocols to our espionage “toolkit”, maybe soon our spies will be able to confirm whether Klingon claims are true or not. That would help the war effort, but possible not as much as the development of the Phaser Coil. When fully researched, it should give a marked improvement in our phasers, though it seems the cost will sky-rocket.

Commander Tucker has removed all trace of the Romulans from the Imprek system. Not a great challenge for Starfleet 1, but at least our back door is once again secure.

Imprek marked.jpg

The short and successful battle for Imprek

0701

I am beginning to believe that someone is organising festivals and other events to keep up morale. Why else would there be a public award ceremony to announce that Maxwell Forest has been recognised for his display of high Principles, and Ellen Hayworth for her Engineering skills? Nevertheless, it filled the news with something other than the dismal course of the war and how we must tighten our belts for the war effort.

0719

Even the commencement of mining the rich mineral resources of Luna Nova Secunda did not appease Treasury, which instead is demanding that more be done to increase our economy. “Volga” is off to claim Yz Ceti, and “Sahara”, with the new Space Station in Struve 2398 giving us the right to exploit that system’s riches, is on its way to the huge deposits of Deuterium on Struve 2398 III.

3337_azmhij.jpg

How concentrations of deuterium occur is still a mystery to geologists

0809

It should be acknowledged that despite the moaning that Treasury is still able to meet the demands of Starfleet Command. Cargo ships loaded with Duranium Plates have left for the Starbases at Sirius A and Luyten’s Star to allow the construction of four Shuttlepods each. That is the best we can do for now to protect the nearby colonies of Sirius Prime and P’Jem.

Captain Skalaar has a sharp eye for detail. The “Sh’kyr” had barely arrived at Roundtree before he reported that the atmospheric conditions on Roundtree IV do not match what we would expect from a planet of that type. He has been told to ignore it for now: the priority is to know if there are valuable resources in the system. Investigating interesting anomalies must wait. There is a war on you know!

1010

The “Enterprise” is now in space dock for its refit – the technical staff say even more mineral reserves must be released to allow it to proceed.

EntNX01broken_bow.jpg

Now out of date, Enterprise NX 01 enters orbit for a refit

While the “Enterprise” is a crowd favourite and enjoys the headlines, there are far more worrying events at 40 Eridani, the site of the Vulcan homeworld. Two Klingon fleets, a total of 5 Strike Ships and 3 Raptors, have warped into the system. Keid Station, protecting the planets, including Vulcan, that orbit the major star Keid, is very powerful. It seems the Vulcans lost one frigate at DX Cancri, and with two destroyers and a frigate should be able to hold off the enemy, but nobody in Starfleet Command doubts that this is just the first wave of Klingon ships.

Vulcan2.jpg

Klingon warships approach the Vulcan Homeworld

With the mob cheering the ”Enterprise” and the elite worrying about our ally, almost nobody paid attention to Governor Malcom Reed (Alpha Centauri Prime) being congratulated for his work as a Unifier.

1111

It is now more likely that our leaders, including Governor Reed, will rule for longer. The Genome Mapping project is of course applicable to all humans, but the word is that for now it will be used only on those in command. The plebs will continue to live as long as normal. Needless to say, this was not announced publicly, and in fact nobody in polite society mentions it, although everyone knows. The current research, into Field Testing, is much less controversial, and should give our ground troops an edge in combat.

Ultimate authority for our Construction Ships rests with the Minister of State, and he is pushing them hard. I don’t think the crews have been home for years. “Sahara” is plodding its way around the Struve system which has proved to be one of the richest ever found. The construction crews are also to be admired: those upgrading the Tau Ceti Space Station, having completed the job and no doubt expecting a well earned rest, are now installing the first of four Shuttlepods.

1124

As predicted, more Klingon ships have joined the attack on Keid Starbase. Another 5 Strike Ships and 8 Raptors have tilted the balance towards the enemy.

Utopia_Planitia_Fleet_Yards.jpg

The Utopia Planitia Shipyards: a megastructure above Mars

The final big event for the year was far more positive. The massive Utopia Planitia Shipyard has opened at Mars. 5 separate construction lines are available, not that we will be able to build that many ships for some time. USS Pegasus Bay, which has been labouring on the job for years, is to join the other Construction Ships: off to Wolf 359 to build a Space Station.

Klingons on aphrodisiacs - a truly terrifying notion.
This time the theme is “Getting from There to Here”
I see what you did there. ;)

The Klingons pushing on to Vulcan is bad news. It's too bad that Stellaris doesn't have a mechanic to simulate supply lines, as I imagine the Klingons would be having trouble operating this far from their own territory at this point. Without that, there really doesn't seem to be much in Starfleet's favor at the moment.

I don't think I could handle supply for the Federation! I would probably forget and have Starfleet get captured out of fuel. (In "Distant Worlds II" getting fuel to fleets is always an irritating problem, despite the AI controlled tankers). But the further the Klingons get from home the more stretched they get: they can't keep a massive fleet and cover everything.

The biggest thing going for the Federations atm is space. A bit like the USSR in WW2, they cannot stop the advance, but they can trade territory for time. Economically the Federation is far stronger than the Klingons, but as I said before, I cannot work out how the Klingons pay for their ships. I suppose they just start with a huge fleet, but they can't build them with alloys: they don't have the resources.
