Saying that it's remotely comparable to a "language board" would give an entirely false impression that it has authority over style and usage or influence thereupon. Certain journalistic, academic, and professional organizations have prescribed style and usage standards, but nothing approaching a central governing body exists.

Only on public "airwaves". They're concerned with whether or not you can say "fuck" at 3 in the afternoon on TV. They don't care about spelling, grammar, and lexicon. Which just goes to show you what kind of priorities America has.
