Is there some way to play with the same small window size as in 800x600, but with 1280x1024 resolution?

Only if you can make your desktop resolution higher than 1280x1024.

Sorry for my dumbness, but can you explain how to get this to work if you've only passingly heard of what a "hex" is, and have no "hex" 'editor'?

IE - a lot more steps please. I'd feel much more comfortable if I knew what I was doing before I started to fiddle with EXE files.

I recommend looking at Pegasus: http://www.ederon.net/Programs/PegasusHexaWizard/tabid/64/language/en-US/Default.aspx
It will let you select the mod from a menu IIRC.

Or use the EU2 configuration tool found in the EU2 folder. Max. resolution is 1280x1024 IIRC.
