Um...When I run it in windowed mode, the game itself is pretty small however the window is as large as my resolution.
Is there any way I can resize it?

Edit: No, nevermind, I fixed it...I had it set to run at 1024x768, so the window was that big. I just put it back to 800x600

generarized too(alpha)

I released Generarized tool for EU2, HoI, VIC, and CK.
If you have trouble with the previous method, or using non-English version, try this one. I'm not sure especially for the latter case, so any feedback is appriciated.

How did you get to this anyways?

One of Japanese fan opened the information month ago. After practicing with various beta patches, I got the knack for it. :)

Can you post how to do this on CK also?

All right. I'll open a thread in the same style later. But as I don't have CK, I can't fully guarantee the information's accuracy.

There is already a tool for 1.03b. It might be better you try that one.

We of Japanese community members play them in windowed mode for more than 4 month now and have no problem so far. It's not surprising as these game engines are desined to run in windowed mode; it's not an option but a parameter, though.

I wish Paradox to officially implement the option, too. But I can speculate/understand their reluctance as well.

1. For many Windows users, it's common knowledge that many applications which can be run in both windowed / full screen mode won't run in windowed mode if desktop is set other than high(16bit) color.
Those ignorant of the fact tend to complain their application won't run even if the restriction is clearly stated in manuals. They vainly try running them in 24bit or 36bit color mode.
Some uesrs might have trouble changing color depth of their Windows.

2. If windowed mode is implemented. you have to expect users would run various applications at the same time. The game might be slowed down / hang up / crush to desktop due to the resources shortage/conflict (CPU, memory, Video RAM, swapping etc.). There're already people who complain these games require too much resources.
Those ignorant of the working of OS might blame Paradox for their trouble, while failing to recognize their poor environment don't have the capacity to run them simulationally.

Result: Increasing support cost and frustration. :D

i got it working, seems pretty cool...few questions, though

can i run in a variable sized window? 800x600 works great for most things, but other times i want to be able to run full screen...is there a shortcut i'm missing?

when i try to load the game in higher resolutions (to solve the above), the window is larger but the graphics remain in 800x600 (most of the window is black). is there a way to just run in a higher resolution if i can't go full screen?

If you want to change screen size, use configuration tool provided by Paradox. You can run it via Windows' menu.

If you want to play EU2 both in full screen mode and windowed mode, you need to have 2 program files in the root directory. Then you can choose whichever mode you like. (eg. original EU2.exe for full screen and patched / renamed EU2W.exe for windowed.) It might be nice to create shortcut for each one.

For the blackened area problem:
Do you watch Credits/Opening? If so, rename avi folder to something else(eg. avi2). Then restart the game again. It'll fix the screen size to your choice made with configuration tool.

I hope this answer will help you.

EDIT: Fixed file names; Damn, this isn't Vicky Forum.

New version released

I redesigned generalized windower and released new version as generalized screen switch.

Every time you run the program, it'll overwrite targeted game engine to run in either windowed or full screen mode, depending on which mode is currently active.

Other informations are reviewed and listed as well.

Have you actually started a scenario after changing the game to a higher res? The main menu is always 800x600 regardless of the game resolution but the window will be the size of the game resolution. When a scenario or savegame is loaded the full window should be used.

Cool, this is some really useful info! now I won't have to do any alt-tabbing to answer those ICQ messages :) Thanks for the effort unknown

only thing that i wish was different is the ability to have the game continue to run while i used AIM or searched the internet or whatever. i used windowed for a hands off test and it sure helped make it go faster, but i'm greedy! :^)

Anyone know how to get the latest November patch running in Window mode? Because the address seems to have changed again..
Address for November beta is 0x001B6817 (byte string to search for in all patches is 00 00 00 00 8B 4D 08 89 0D).

I know, I'm impatient. :) But can we ask for the new address to run the new (feb 2) beta patch ? Thanks a lot.

EDIT: I didn't see you put the search string there. Double thanks. I found the new address at:

0x001B69E7

Tested and working.

Thank you for your input. I tested the address with my tool and added it to the first post.

BTW, you can patch new EXEs easily with the tool I mention in my sig and the first post. EU2, Vic, HoI(2), and CK can be patched by it. If you can't wait someone's input, please take acount of using it. ;)
