Of course.

Let's see, if you break truce against Ottomans that's -5 stability. You have three Orthodox provinces, so that's 16*3=48 ducats per stability before inflation. To recoup all stability it's 48*5=240 ducats before or 240*1.08<260 ducats after inflation assuming a worst case 8% inflation by 1422. you get 8 ducats for relgion and 8 for your initial monarch; 8+8=16 ducats a month toward stability. 260 ducats/ 16 ducats per month < 17 months. So without investment, you can recoup all your stability almost as soon as the smoke clears from your first war. Think about it, what's it really going to cost you to break truce? A few months where you get 1.00 times tax instead of 1.25. What's that amount to 5 ducats or less? Okay population growth is down and risk of civil war exists but so what? In 1422, you are still a small country, stability is not much of an issue.

Wow! I had no idea this thread would be so long. I guess my observation is a little late, but heh.

You are, of course, quite right. I believed that breaking truces would increase the BB value (that would make sense to me), but following your analysis I set up a simple simulation, and it would appear that it doesn't.

Now, however, I am breaking truces right and left, in the hope of either finishing my conquest quickly, or getting a civil war. Both would be fun.

Alone in the Dark

Hello class!

Class??

Anyone still alive?

Sigh. The students of today have no stamina. Two weeks spent in quiet contemplation without the distraction of food and drink is enough to kill them off. Now, when I was a student, we used to work 25 hours a day while not actually doing any studying at all, and the teachers beat us to death every morning, as we left class, since our day's classes began an hour before the previous day's classes ended, and when we we didn't do our homework in our copious free time, we got punished for it, and we even had to supply the axes ourselves, as well as those small incredibly painful things that go sproing as they are inserted in your nostrils, and not only that, we had to pay for the privilige of flunking the examinations, but if you tell the students of today this, do they believe it, no. Pampered, spoiled, rotten brats all, I'll just have to fetch my disintegrator and clean up the classroom. Including my chair that seems to be coated in glue. Stupid student prank, must be Carlos 'the Rubberduck' Rex again.

...

Ah, I see that some of you have decided that you are alive, or at least undead, or converted into lean-tos, weird, that, come to think of it, enough to take part in todays lesson. Nice leather jacket, Prufrock451, and a new bone knife as well. Been busy, have we?

As the hardcopy-facility seems to be out of order (it is filled with glue and has an Oops sign attached), you will have to make do with the holographic display, so don't blink.

As you well remember we have nearly conquered the known world. Now, with 57 years remaining, we should have no problems conquering the rest in due time. However, due to the laziness of the students we are in a race against time, since examinations are coming up soon. Within a week or so, actually.

Stop waving your hand like that Legolas! You might injure somebody.

Oh, you want the details of the examination program. Shame of you! Being a friendly teacher, I will give you a hint: Multiple choice questionaire followed by practical assignment.

And that's the last word on that subject.

So, in order to complete our conquest in time, let us enact a program of rearmament, and go trucebreaking again. This has the added advantage, that we might suffer a civil war. Those are always stimulating. And since we have eliminated the Reformed Christian faith, and only Moscow remains Orthodox, we can allow ourselves to be very tolerant of Catholics, Protestants, and even, though to a lesser degree, Muslims.

And, what would you know, China declares war in July 1766. Now that's a real surprise. Fortunately, the 600,000 new troops in China allows us to rapidly crush the Chinese resistance allowing us to gain Heilongjiang, Jehol, Jilin, Sikhote, Tohoku, and Wenshan.

As England and Portugal declare war in June 1767, it is, perhaps, time to finish off Mataram as well, so we declare war upon Mataram without Casus Belli. And no sooner said, than done. England and Mataram are annexed within half a year, and Portugal loses everything but the capital.

So, knowing the risks of anarchy and dissolution, we declare war upon China in March 1768. Our stability plummets to -3 from the lofty +3 it had previously occupied, due to breaking the truce and lacking a Casus Belli, but well, those are the breaks, really. It does, of course, spawn 23 immediate revolts and numerous others to come, but the armies stand ready to deal with these minor disturbances. We'll just keep pouring our income into stability, since we regain one point every 5 months or so at present.

Though I will admit, that I don't really understand our current puppet. A beneficient diplomatic move with China, now? Just goes to show, that even the best puppet can do very stupid things. Oh, well, it doesn't harm us.

And after nine months, in December 1768, we get Amour, Baicheng, Hepei, Kanto, Shandong, and Tchumkan from China.

And seeing that everything is going so well, let us declare war again in January 1769. Our stability hadn't quite recovered (to put it mildly), so we will suffer a few more revolts this time.... 38 to be exact.

But now, for the first time, it is within our reach to occupy the whole of China within a reasonable span of time. As our ever victorious armies march joyously into the snows of Manchuria, remember that you only have to pay the survivors.

This war, if you can call it a war, really, is nothing but besieging, assaulting, and repelling the scattered Chinese fleets. Hardly sporting, really, but they really should have joined us of their own volition earlier instead of fighting to the last in a futile gesture of complete and utter idiocy to protects their Emperor.

And by Aprial 1771 we control all of China, and receive their nine Manchurian colonial provinces, Ezochi, Yalu and 150 ducats, whcih is probably the best we could expect, at a value of 89%.

Corruption again? Oh, well. Ignore it and appoint ten governors, you know how it works. We will also need to replace the 500K troops lost during the last war before we attack China again. Ah, a new centre of trade in Aleppo? Well, why not. Meanwhile, let us start building colonies near Zimbabwe, so we can get rid of that upstart nation. They keep interfering with our centre of trade in Zanzibar.

Right. Zimbabwe sends a diplomatic insult in June 1772. Boy, will they regret it. Time to declare war and send in the troops. Some 60K can be ferried in from Ethiopia and Zanj within a month or two.

That terrain sure is inhospitable. Losses to attrition are excessive. Guess we'll just have to ferry in more troops, then.

And Portugal declares war in March 1773. Time for them to die at last.

Actually, with two nations pending annexation, now might be a good time to break our truce with China again. And with the annexation of Portugal and Zimbabwe, the simulation proclaims our puppet-emperor the emperor of the HRE as well. That title doesn't really make much sense by now, but what the heck.

Way to go! While we are busily retaking the last Chinese provinces, the Chinese deliver a diplomatic insult, giving us a Casus Belli for a year... This will prove useful.

Because while we end the current war with China in July 1774 taking Kansai, Kyushu, and Shihoku (worth 90% for those three provinces!) we have still got a Casus Belli...

Which explains our declaration of war in October 1774, sending stability from +3 to -2.

By April 1776 this war ends with us gaining Fujian, Kowloon, Liaoning, Shanghai, and Zhijiang, leaving China with only its capital.

So to finish them off, we declare war again on July 1st 1776 (breaking the truce and without Casus Belli, as usual), and annex them on August 1st 1776.

No nations remain but us, unless they should exist on some remote island somewhere. Our technology is Land 42, Naval 20, Trade 6, and Infrastructure 7. With a bit of naval investment we will be capable of exploring the rest of the world, and over the next decade or two we will colonise the last few remaining uncolonised provinces. This will likely prove very boring, so we will let the simulator run at full speed.

First, however, let us get our stability to +3 again. One is never free of the threat of civil war, after all.

January 1, 1777 : Our country has been struck by Civil War.

How interesting.

It would appear that 229 provinces, give or take a few, are now in rebel hands.

But don't panic.

That still leave hundreds of provinces under our control.

And most of the provinces lost are probably trading posts or minor colonial cities. Ok, after reading the list, perhaps not. It seems, in fact, as if Europe, North, Central, and South America, India, and Indonesia are pretty hard hit, while Africa, China, Persia, and our core provinces near the capital escaped relatively intact. Fortunately, we have an army ready to restore order, so...

Why is our army upkeep down to 80 ducats per month from 320 ducats? Oh. A natural explanation, I see.

Actually, losing nearly two thirds of our armies can be seen as a boon, since our revenues will be slightly lower in the forseeable future. It does, admittedly, leave a lot of clueless rebels running around, and we must expect many more rebellions due to neighbouring rebels, but we still retain 1,650,000 men under arms, and our 3,200 ducats treasury allows us to raise an extra 450,000 infantry in our core provinces. Finally, we will have a need for the 500,000 pool of manpower. Oh, and our 150,000 reserve army stationed in Trace and Anatolya remained loyal. Nice.

But having all the Spanish armies rebel as well as most of the French ones hurt slightly. And our 9,000 men in Zimbabwe who now face 40,000 enemies may be in trouble, but so what. The problems of Zimbabwe are insignificant compared to the others that face us.

On the other hand, there is some really good news. The navy stayed loyal, so we will be capable of blockading and ferrying troops about at will.

Ok, the plan is straightforward, really. While the rebels are pretty ineffuctual now, given time they will certainly spawn secessionist movements. And it will take time, for all but a very few of the people of the empire are used to the idea of empire by now. They may be in rebellion, but they aren't thinking of actually seceding. As yet. Thus we must prioritize, and the two foremost priorities must be to retake Europe as soon as possible, with India and Indochina as secondary targets. Our second priority must be to regain stability as soon as possible. Once we are stable we can divert income to the treasury, and should our manpower pool dry out, we can raise mercenaries in Europe as needed. We must restore order as soon as possible, and that means spending men assaulting every rebel stronghold. The butcher's list will be gruesome, but so be it.

And while focus is on Europe, India, and Indochina, we must of course also fight in every single other theatre, as our forces permit.

Next lesson will, hopefully, demonstrate our complete superiority as we crush this silly civil war in a short time with a minimum of casualties, and will be followed by the handing out of the exam papers.

Class dismissed.

Yes! It took five broken truces within a decade, but I finally managed to provoke a civil war (or I just got lucky).

Excellent job! You conquered the world! And got struck in a civil war..

Well, it could be worse. I think. If you hadn't get a civil war, the lesson may had ended right here! So maybe we shall thank the rebel scum :).

Heagarty was NOT prepared for the final exam. His hope's that the conference tournamanent would earn him some exemption from academics had faded. Apparently some members of the media had been looking into the favorable treatment given to athletes and now he was stuck having to actually do his course work.

"Professor, before the finals will there be a review session? I have gone through the class notes over and over, and I'm afraid I still don't understand how easily some people can successfully convert large populations. "

"When I try it, it may often take repeated attempts, costing lots of money and creating the annoying problem of revolts after each failed attempt? I still attempt it, but it seems to take much longer, and I haven't been able to pull it off on the grand scale you've shown here. How do you pull it off so successfully?"

"Oh yeah, and the Civil War stuff was pretty neat, too. Will that be on the exam?"

*sighs*

300 years nonstop missionary activity yields 900 attempts when narrowminded Catholic. With an average successrate around 20% (much higher amongst the pagans, lower amongst the very highly populated non-pagans) you shouldn't be surprised to see 180 succesful conversions. Or 160, or 220 for that matter. And since the simulator is slightly bugged in this regard, perhaps a few more. And sure, you get the other 700 odd rebellions for your pain, but so what? If God had meant for rebels to succeed, he would have given them more cavalry

And of course it costs money. But so does armies, and you can always coin more if you need it. Convert the cheap while you are poor and the rich when you are not. Or something like that.

And when only a few provinces remain of one of your slider religions, you can park some huge forces on those provinces, and reduce tolerance towards them to zero. Sure they will rebel, but the added tolerance to other faiths more than justifies the expense.

(And should you play Byzantium, you will notice that several of the monarchs have better than average diplomatic skills.)

"Oh yeah, and the Civil War stuff was pretty neat, too. Will that be on the exam?"

Now that would be telling.

Not only it's efficient - you get higher auto conversion probability, but also it's fun :)) hehehe esp in early stages of the game when you are not ready for BB wars ;))

I'm normally doing it with CoT and other highly expensive provinces, leaving them for that kind of finishing off ;))

Why oh why are so many of the pictures in this thread tied to "blech" Care2.com? I mean come on now ... world conquest and eco-freaks do NOT mix. Heck, I'm going to have to wash my ethernet card out after having connected to such a pile of crap.

And whats even worse, I registered to the site (of course I used a none sensical name and false Email address), just to try to see the supposed pictures, which I could not locate easily.

Ugghhh -- just thinking of that site makes me want to something to get the stench of the site off my computer. Blech!

World Conquest and eco-freaks do mix. Read Modesitt and find out :)

And the reason the pictures are tied to care2 is because they provide service free of charge despite a huge load of pictures, and until recently there was no problems with direct linking, whereas now some pictures gets Oopsed some of the time (seemingly at random, but there is bound to be some dastardly masterplan behind it).

If a picture is Oopsed it may be possible to see it without registering by rightclicking on the oops sign to get the real image properties and then pasting the address in your webbrowser. Can't do better than that right now, sorry :(

Hey, come on. You too can click on a Panda and save acres of Bamboo :D

That's why we conquer the world, after all. To keep it safe for Pandas everywhere.

...And to utterly eradicate any and all opposition, fish, fowl, and mammal, but that goes without saying.

Rebel Without a Pause

Good morning, class!

As you no doubt recall, last lesson ended with the onslaught of civil war, the rebels taking control of almost two thirds of our armies, and 229 of our provinces.

But today, my students, the Byzantine Empire Strikes Back.

My very first order is the recruitment of approximately 450,000 infantry in our core provinces.

The second to direct our central European forces to combat their rebel brethren, so the rebels can't attack our recruits when their training is finished.

The third is to direct our remaining forces all over the world to begin besieging nearby rebel provinces. Since we retain much infantry in China, the four Catholic provinces (Shanxi, Hubei, Henan, Anhui) must be retaken by storm immediately to give us a secure staging area to retake the rest of China - and to combat the hundreds of thousands of Chinese rebels.

The fourth is to send our mighty fleets to blockade rebel coastal provinces. Let them be isolated as soon as possible.

The fifth is to order our 150,000 reserve army around the capital to retake our central European core provinces.

While France is relatively untouched, Germany is less so. As you can see in the following image of our remaining German armies. Yes, I am talking about the 17,000 men in Würtemberg, eyeing the 42,000 rebels in Wurzberg carefully.

Rebels now control most of Europe, January 1777

Fortunately the rebels, while numerous, are poorly led and don't operate according to a common plan, so they can be defeated in detail. Which we will proceed to do.

And which we do.

Please note, that due to so many provinces being in rebel hands, we actually experience fewer rebellions per month during this period of recouping stability! An unexpected benefit, for sure. Slightly offset by the fact that some provinces are in rebellion because of neighbouring rebels, of course, but every bit helps.

Stop sniggering!

As our 450,000 new recruits finish basic training, they are ordered to march on Poland, Lithuania, Russia, and western Europe. Troops are raised in Egypt to retake Northern Africa, while the American forces hold their own against the rebels. Barely. In the North it is a stalemate. In Central America we are winning. In South America our few remaining forces are being crushed, and we control too few provinces to raise any sort of relief forces. We will just have to leave South America in rebel hands for a year or two, until we can gather forces to retake it. Too bad.

And May 1777 sees an unprovoked revolt. Unprovoked, heh. Oh, well, those few extra rebels hardly make any difference in the overall picture.

And by June 1778 we have emptied our manpower pool of 500K and recruited all the mercenaries available. Now we will have to make do with 42K new recruits plus 8K-10K mercenaries per month.

And casualties are... staggering, both in the succesful assaults and even more so in the failed ones. But Europe is rapidly being retaken, which end justifies the means.

After the first year of the civil war, by January 1778, half the lost provinces have been retaken, and only 109 provinces are left in rebel hands (and a dozen or so trading posts as well, but so what). The army is up to 2.1M men despite having suffered something like a half million casualtis, but detailed reports on casualties aren't the top priority right now. The good news is, that Africa, Arabia, Central Europe, China, Manchuria, and Nippon are nearly rebel free, which means that we can start retaking Western and Southern Europe (especially Spain, where the rebels run rampant). Stability having been recovered, income is diverted to funds to raise the few troops available, and naval research - we really want naval27 soon, which will finally allow us to map the globe, allowing us to see if we have missed any opposition.

INCOMING!!!!!

What?

Boink!

Oh no! Not the rubberduck! Carolus Rex, you naughty student you, prepare to meet your maker!

Sit down and shut up. You can collect your liver after class.

As I was saying, reaching naval27 will allow us to map the globe, but we still have to take care of the rebels, since quite a few remain.

Let us get those forces moving!

Damnation! Afghanistan declares independence in four provinces in April 1778. Fortunately we have upwards up 70,000 troops in the vicinity that we can spare from the assault on India. Except for one thing. This independence movement is an omen, that we should not grow complacent. Perhaps we should rather step up the Indian campaign. And don't forget to trade embargo Afghanistan, of course.

This we do, as you see, which means that the war with Afghanistan takes six months to complete, leaving their worthless monarch nearly alone in his hovel in Qandahar.

As you can see, little opposition remains, and by January 1779 we open a new Centre of Trade in Brunei. Now Africa, Arabia, China, Europe, Indochina, Indonesia, Manchuria, and Nippon are free of rebels, and only 23 provinces remain in rebel hands. Despite recruiting every man available, our army is only up 100K since last year, since we have lost another half million men storming the fortresses of India and Spain.

Actually, when I say Europe is free, I am not quite right. The tenacious defenders of Ingermanland still defy our mighty armies. But once our army recovers its morale it will assault again.

The last defenders of Ingermanland are tough, very tough

As we finally get around to retaking South America, the spirit of peace descends on the Empire, as the civil war nears its end.

Which doesn't prevent China from declaring independence in January 1780 in the tradingpost of Taiwan. The Chinese 'Emperor' and his nine followers in Taiwan have somehow managed to finance a thousand Chinese soldiers under the command of general Lung, and this mighty army appears out of concealment in our province of Roma.

Don't attempt to understand this, just accept it.

Well, that and annex China immediately. No need even to send troops to Taiwan, a stern letter of annexation is enough.

With only four provinces under rebel control, and with our army now consisting of 2,5M men, it is fair to say that the civil war is over. The annexation of Afghanistan will be delayed until 1783, when the truce period is over.

By 1781 no rebels remain, and the revolt risk is 0% in most of the Empire. We are at peace. Not even the Afghanistani diplomatic insult of 1781 disturbs my tranquility.

1782 sees us reaching naval27 and the mapping of the globe. As expected we find no nations left in the world to oppose us.

1784 sees Afghanistan annexed.

Our current income is enough to fund two manufactories yearly, while continuing colonisation and fighting inflation.

We still lack to colonise 5 provinces in South America, four in Africa, about ten provinces in Siberia, a few islands in Indonesia, and Australia. But those colonisations, and the building of the infrastructure needed to launch the exploration of space prior to the conquest of the next solar system will be left as an excercise to the student, along with the conversion of Moscow, that rejected more than ten conversion attempts, since the World Conquest class is, finally, at an end.

Class dismissed!

Oh, and lest I forget. Examination papers will be handed out shortly.

::raises his hand:: Can you repeat all that?

Wow! That was a pretty impressive recovery from civil war. I'm amazed you were able to bring all of it under control before dozens of nations declared independence...something that would have given you a real headache given the time restriction.

Most enjoyable Peter. Soooooo many laughs.:D

There's a reason I concentrated on Europe first :) After the first year, there wasn't a lot to dread (1 province nations being immediately annexable, after all). Though I did dread a revitalised Spain or Mughal Empire for a while - but they never appeared.

I guess decentralisation helped due to the decreased risk to spring liberation movements mentioned on the slider info. At any rate I only saw the 4 province Afghanistan and the 1 TP China (which was a laugh in its own right). But boy, was it bloody, during the first two years, with multiple assaults going on at all times. (Consider the following: I lost approximately 1 million infantry to assaults, not attrition, during the first two years of civil war)

I considered playing the last 40 years, but having succesfully fought and recovered from a civil war in only six years, while continuing research, colonisation, and manufactory building, I didn't really see any challenge on the horizon :D
