It's ILL-ih-noi. People who pronounce the s are just... tacky.

Is that 'ill-ih-nwah', or 'ill-ih-noy'?

:p
While I don't speak French and hence might be mistaken, how does nois ever end up pronounced as nwah? That just makes no sense.

Because that's how it works in French?

Not English, though. Illinois should rhyme with annoy or destroy.

Why so racist to Illinois Indians? ;)

Nois is nwah in French?
Also you can't use English here, since Illinois is French and hence English is irrelevant in this case.

Just like 'dyspnoic'

;)
That rhymes with destroy?

Not sure what you meant then.
What?

I said the word has French roots, but the pronunciation has been americanized to Illy-noise (with the s more or less like in the word "noise")
As you say it's a French word. Hence the correct pronunciation is the French one. Not what some Americans might come up with.

Would you also say elite instead of élite or naive instead of naïve?

I was being annoying by pointing out that 'noi' isn't always pronounced 'noy' in English.
I just realised I apparently don't know how dyspnoic is pronounced.

"Hospital" has french roots, but surely you pronounce the "s" in "hospital" even though it is not pronounced in french?
The s in hospital isn't pronounced in French? I thought it was the h not being pronounced.

There is no "s" hospital in Modern French. You're looking for "hôpital".

When speaking english, do you also pronounce Paris without the "s"? Your answer to that question should settle that matter, for better or worse.
If I remember, then yes.

Yeah I realised that it was that and as such hospital is different in that it's not spelled the same way. The h in hôpital is silent right? I'm not sure I pronounce the ô right though. And I have said hôpital loads of times btw due to L'Hôpital's rule.
