CK2 Dev Diary#28: Easing Executions

It’s Monday again, and you know what that means: a Dev Diary! It’s time to start talking about new features in an upcoming DLC which I can’t name yet. For DDs we prefer to talk about things we’ve already implemented, but this <Mystery DLC> is still in the very early stages so you’re going to see some mockups which hopefully convey the idea of what we are going for without being an exact representation - don’t be surprised if the final result looks rather different though.

With that said, the basic idea is to give the Intrigue screen more room for Decisions and Prisoners. As well as that, a system of filters and a set of “do to all currently shown” buttons to Release/Ransom/Execute multiple characters at once:

Ideally we’ll also have a lock button on characters so they can be excluded from mass actions, and radio buttons would likely be better than our traditional dropdown lists.

That’s it for now, I did warn you I would make some short DDs sometimes!

/me bursts into happy crying.

Would you consider tying prisoner options/outcomes to a series of buildings or building upgrades?

There's opportunity to grant/restrict methods or torture, model overcrowding, probability of escapes and death while in custody, all based on your dungeon level and offshoot/ancillary upgrades.

Possible special minor title of court torturer or prison warden or executioner appointable with their traits or skill level impacting the probability of the outcome in which they are involved: such as "died while being tortured," or "botched execution," etc.

Can I just suggest something to help new players understand: rename the intrigue screen to "domestic affairs" or something like that

Right now lots of decisions that have nothing to do with intrigue, like taking loans etc., are in this screen. Calling it the intrigue screen still just makes things more obtuse to new players trying to understand the interface.

In addition, allow some subheadings in decisions to separate recruitment/plot/etc. decisions. It's a very confusing unorganized list right now.

Plots aren't necessarily domestic though.

A few more filters that would be nice to have:

- My Dynasty/Not My Dynasty/All - to be able to quickly exclude your kin from being executed, or to quickly free them all

- Heirs Included/Heirs Excluded - to easily exclude heirs to titles that may not be landed

- Exclude Enemies/Only Enemies/All - to be able to keep around the people (rivals, traitors, current foes and their kin, people that tortured/mutiliated you/your kin, etc.) you have special plans for

- Men/Women/All - to easily filter out e.g. possible future concubines from an action that would remove them from your prison

- Children/Adults/All - to let more squeamish characters avoid executing children

- No Claims/No Claims on My Realm/No Claims on Me/Has Claims/Has Claims on My Realm/Has Claims on Me/All - to easily exclude potential claimants you want to keep locked up, or to easily find them and execute them

- My Religion/My Religion Group/Not My Religion/Not My Religion Group/All - to easily include or exclude a religion when taking an action

I would argue the name should be the one that applies the most though.

My point was just: Right now, the only thing on this screen that you can unequivocally say is not 'domestic' are if you have a plot and this plot is aimed at a foreign character. And while this depends on playstyle, to me at least this accounts for less than half my plots since you're unlikely to get high plot power against foreign characters. On the other hand, really everything from ransoming prisoners, making loans, recruiting characters, holding tournmanets, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. that is on this screen fits under domestic but awkwardly to not at all under intrigue. (Some will say prison management is perfect for intrigue. I can see that side but from the other side stuff like ransoming is really more a diplomatic action, capturing people in battle is a military action, and so on: the prison system in CK2 is only tangentially connected to anything intrigue-related.) And of course all this is not so much as in semantics but as in "I want to do this thing, where in the interface can I find this thing?" I don't think anyone is going to expect holding tournaments etc. falls under 'intrigue'.

If you guys can come up with a name that includes everything on that screen, of course, do. It's not about my idea for the name being great. It's that the intrigue screen has way too much important core game features there that have nothing to do with intrigue.

Wait, wait, wait...hold on!

Is this mean when we give the order and execute everyone, we are going to hear all death sounds at once??

If multiple people are executed all at once are they all executed the same way? That would make sense. I mean when you have the gallows up you may as well hang a few folks.

Since you're working on prisoners, I'd love to have the option to demand religious conversion as a condition of release. Also the ability to change education focus for captured kids would be nice (so you can convert them to your culture/religion).

Why not make a seperate screen for decisions? You're right that they have very little to do with the other intrigue actions, and giving them a seperate screen would let us see more at the same time. This would also free up some space for the suggested extra prisoner filters, which would otherwise cut into the already small list of prisoners we have now.
