CK2 Dev Diary#28: Easing Executions

It’s Monday again, and you know what that means: a Dev Diary! It’s time to start talking about new features in an upcoming DLC which I can’t name yet. For DDs we prefer to talk about things we’ve already implemented, but this <Mystery DLC> is still in the very early stages so you’re going to see some mockups which hopefully convey the idea of what we are going for without being an exact representation - don’t be surprised if the final result looks rather different though.

With that said, the basic idea is to give the Intrigue screen more room for Decisions and Prisoners. As well as that, a system of filters and a set of “do to all currently shown” buttons to Release/Ransom/Execute multiple characters at once:

Ideally we’ll also have a lock button on characters so they can be excluded from mass actions, and radio buttons would likely be better than our traditional dropdown lists.

That’s it for now, I did warn you I would make some short DDs sometimes!

Looking forward to the plethora of UI improvements in Mystery DLC, but I must confess to some confusion over the enthusiasm for ransoming off multiple prisoners at once. I'm 1500 hours in and have never found it all that irksome myself. Beginning to question my playstyle here!

You can only "own" one plot, but you've always been able to back others too.

Damn, I was hoping this would be an intrigue-focused DLC. The way you plot plots has always seemed counter-intuitive to me. After all, Richard III didn't need his courtiers' help... And more (and more directed) inter-character interactions would be good, in general.

When you siege down a holding and nab 15 characters, it's a really nice quality-of-life thing to be able to ransom all of them off at once instead of doing 15 clicks over several months (due to waiting for responses).

At least, I hope it'll work like that - it's honestly a bit unclear how mass-ransom would work when applied to characters from the same court (due to possible conflicts with available money to pay the ransom and whatnot)

Or maybe he DID need their help but they were so good at covering their tracks we never found out!

Let's face it : CK2 is a game of plots. We ought to have the possibility to make more than one at once and to have more controls over those we are in. This would greatly improve the game in my opinion.
Agreed, plots should be a MAJOR part of the game, and we should be able to have more than one active plot at a time.

Perhaps it would be interesting to somehow have an overall "plot power" that you could share/invest among several long-term objectives at the same time. This could be represented by, for example, giving you 100% power/points for a single plot, 40% power per plot for up to 3 plots, and 20% power per plot for up to 8 plots. That would let you invest in a diverse but diluted "portfolio" of mayhem if you wanted to, or go "all-in" on a single high priority objective.

I think there could be additional plot power and general tweaks that related to:
  • threshold level for triggering action (ie "overclock" to potentially accelerate action at a price, or just invest to get faster action on a plot);
  • the ability to cover up premature plot exposure/leaks (through murder or bribery) in order to prevent reputation damage;
  • "false flag" plots to discredit rivals or instigate wars among other parties (more interactive than some of the Counselor actions we have now);
  • in general, lots more intrigue and plotting!
Bottom line: please add more plot features and interactivity. Plots and intrigue should be one of the greatest peace-time pastimes for rulers, and would be a refreshing way to play the game rather than just marrying or fighting your way into power.

Ability to involve yourself in multiple plots could be education based?

Ability to back plots: Base 1, +1 for each rank of intrigue education (so even a level 1 intrigue education is 2, with level 3 having 4), + 1 for intrigue focus.
Ability to own plots: Base 0, +1 for having an intrigue of 8 or higher, +1 for level 2 intrigue education, +2 for level 3.

After all, someone with an intrigue of 3 isn't going to be able to put together a plot.

Continuing on plot power...
I don't know how hard coded plot limit system for characters. I do agree characters should be able to do more plots but since we can do only one with current mechanics, maybe we could influence our friends or spymaster to start a plot to kill our target and then we could join to that. AI could sometimes asks us too. Maybe this way we could at least have 2-3 plots of our "own" without creating big thing out of It?

I think the characters finder needs some improvements and choices because sometimes It's time consuming when you are looking for specific traits for grant a land or marriages and switching between filters .. for that I think adding a customizable templates would be a great addition , filters for finding only who would accept an invitation to your court and who can be persuade by a gift like in the plots invitations also would be appreciated .. all the improvements are welcome and thanks for all your hard work.

Seems i have to quote myself..

Use the search box at the top in the character search window and type in the name of the trait or whatnot...,
though you can't exlcude traits this way, as far as i know..

You can type in several trait names too, not only one.
You can also combine dynasty name and traits.

Yeah, having traits be something you type in is both unintuitive (so many people don't realize that's how you search for traits) and very limiting. A trait-picker (which itself could be searchable) would be better, and then the search box in the character finder could be reserved for what makes intuitive sense: the names of characters.

It would also be nice to have an option to filter by your dynasty explicitly instead of just a distinction between all characters/nobles. Also an option to actually filter out characters out of diplomatic range instead of just marking them with an icon. Most of the time I don't care about characters I can't interact with.

I know about all that but what I meant was to use that on a template like what I said afterwards ..

Sure could be a handy addtion.
Just got the impression at first that you don't know about the search text box..
Cheers :cool:

"My Dynasty" is an option now since one of the last few patches, not sure which.

Sounds good so far! For flavour I hope we get some traits and Nicknames should we decide to mass execute or release people regurlary.
And maybe modifiers on your vassals for example mass executions will give a negative modifier on your "Kind" Vassals but a positive for "Cruel","Lunatics", "Craven" and should you execute infidels for "Zealous".

I think this is a interesting approach to the vassal game, so ruthless dictators might wanna make sure their actions won't be objected by their council or disliked by their vassals.
