CK2 Dev Diary #95: Amending Africa

Greetings!

We’ve shown you plenty of map changes already, including updates to Russia, Scandinavia, and most recently Italy and the Alps. But surely, we couldn’t do all of these wonderful updates without looking at the continent that deserves it the most, right?

So let’s have a look at Africa.

You read that right. Africa is finally getting the love and attention it deserves! Northern Africa and Mali have long needed an update. Where counties resembled squares and rectangles more than anything else. But no more!

Let’s start with the northern kingdoms. The kingdoms themselves remain the same. Only Mauretania has been renamed to Maghreb, and has along with the kingdom of Africa been placed in the Empire of Maghreb. Mainly to break down the very large Arabian Empire slightly. On the county level, every single county has been repainted in order to place them where they should be and give the borders a much more natural feeling.

All in all, the new provinces and additional holding slots will make North Africa stronger than before. But to offer additional protection against aggressive Holy Wars from the major powers of Europe, we’ve increased the number of sea zones slightly in the mediterranean. The stronger realms of central Europe will now have to first conquer their way down to the coast of Iberia, Southern Italy, or go through Mallorca or Sardinia, before they will be able to reach the shores of Africa. This should give the realms in Africa some time before the Europeans attempt to make their way onto the continent.

As for Mali. The area has about twice the number of provinces compared to what they had before. This in turn allows for more than just the lonely kingdom of Mali to exist, which has been split into the three kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhay. One kingdom for each of the major powers that inhabited the area during the timeframe of the game. They’ll all still be part of the empire of Mali, which is finally no longer the only empire with a single De Jure kingdom.

Here is an overview of the De Jure kingdoms:

Updating the existing parts of the map is not the only thing we’ve done for Africa however. Kanem-Bornu and the region around lake Chad is now on the map as well! The area consists of the two kingdoms Hausaland and Kanem. These consist of three and four duchies respectively and together form the empire of Kanem-Bornu. So not only do we get new rulers and titles to play with, but it allows both east and west to move across the continent without always having to expand north and, usually, through a Muslim blob that more often than not forms in Northern Africa and Arabia. Instead, you’ll be able to cross Africa through Ghana/Mali in the west, through the Sahara and the Fezzan corridor in the center, and finally through Wadai and Abyssinia in the east.

Let’s not stop there though.

To make Africa more distinct from other regions, a second trade route has been added to the game; the Trans-Saharan Trade Route.

06_trade_route.png

It requires either Horse Lords or Jade Dragon to be unlocked and functions very much like the updated Silk Road from 2.8. There is however, a certain twist to it. The base value of the trade route is very low. Granting next to no bonuses to the counties it passes through. What you need to do in order to benefit from it, is to control certain locations along the trade route and construct unique production buildings in established trade posts. To be clear though, these are merely special buildings within the trade posts just like you would upgrade a trade post on the Silk Road. These buildings represent some of the trade goods that historically had a large impact on the trade in the region. The most important of these will be the Gold Mines.

08_gold_mine.png

There are two Gold Mines located on the map, both of them in the kingdom of Mali. The Gold Mines will allow Mali to amass great wealth. Just like they did historically. If you would prefer to do it differently and take the mines from them, conquering Africa will very much be worth the effort. Not only will Gold Mines greatly increase the value of the Trans-Saharan trade, it will also grant the owner a large bonus to the county’s income. There will also be some flavour events that can trigger for anyone owning them.

Remember that what I’ve shown here is still a work in progress and things may be subject to change. Now, let’s wrap up the dev diary with some smaller additions.

We’ve renamed the West African religion to simply “African”, as to not exclude the newly added region around lake Chad, and updated the Patron Deities accordingly. The religion will also get a new set of shields for displaying the CoAs on the map.

I hope that you look forward to these changes and the overall improvements for Africa!

If I remember my history correctly, there was a big trans-Saharan slave trade benefiting the Arabs in the CK2 period - are we going to see more of that, given the development of Africa here, or will that have to wait for another DLC?
It may have been reasonably big but not one of the primary trade goods. Nothing like the later transatlantic slave trade. Also slavery in the ck2 era was very different from American chattel slavery. Many slaves were servants and intellectuals some even commanded armies some even rose to the thrones of their countries. And considering this there really is so little difference between being a slave or a feudal subject it's not really relevant.
Have you considered a massive supply debuff to the Sahara crossing provinces? Historically no one tried to conquer across it until very late in the game period, and even then nearly the entire army died. Islam crossed the Sahara through trade, not war.
Actually the Moroccans crossed and toppled the Ghana empire about midway through this period. That said they failed to hold on to the area.
What about the duchies of Naissos and Temes, which are Serbia-colored but are parts of Bulgaria and Hungary respectively?

Also, county colors matter too imo. Some are just completely off.
They're Serbia coloured because they ended up being part Serbia later.

Yeah kinda sucks Catholics, pagans, now the Africans are getting all these boons and cool features but all the Byzantines and orthodox get is a crusade to the face and a stomp to their moral authority cause of it. Byzantines directly aided and benefited from the first crusade, maybe just make it so they can only join crusades for Anatolia or Greece.

If they are really adding +300 provinces like they say, they may not be done yet. Even with all they've shown so far, I don't see how this can be more than 200. We may see some Dev Diaries debuting a whole slew of new provinces and features for the Middle East and Byzantine.

And if I'm wrong, hey that sounds like a great premise for the next DLC.

It was much later (late 15th/early 16th century) and not Ghana (not existing for couple of centuries already) but Songhay, but otherwise you're of course right.
Please ignore my nitpicking

No that's another time. Separate occasions. I mean the one they mention at the start of the extra credit series I posted. My guess is calling them morrocans is anachronistic though.

Edit: I am talking about the Almoravids.

SORT OF right.

There were three main goods traded back and forth: Salt went south, gold and slaves went north. Actually many of the slaves were women who went on to become household servants or wives in the Arab world. The Arabs enslaved far more black women than they did black men because of the nature of marriages in the Islamic world.

The Almoravid conquest of Wagadou was not necessarily as cut-and-dry as it looks there in that it doesn't seem to have been a real conquest so much as a swift kick which led to regime change. They pulled it off largely because the Almoravids were Lamtuna Berbers - that is, they didn't live in the north of the Maghreb, but were semi-nomads who lived in the desert between the Sous and the Adrar Plateau - that is, they lived south of the High Atlas. They made it to Wagadou because they were already, in real terms, pretty darn close. Their conquest was, however, quite ephemeral and probably had more to do with political influence - they didn't rule it directly for long, and once Abu-Bakr the Sanhaji died, things ended up in the hands of Kambine Diarisso and it was native Soninke running things until the Sosso sidled in and took over.

Nobody from Morocco has ever invaded or even destroyed Ghana. Even the mytha about Almoravid conquest has been disproved.
They played a role in converting the empire, but not as military conquest. And even the military interactions they had with Ghana (conquest of Awdaghust) were not from Morocco but from the Sahara, the origin of Almoravids.

Fairly certain islam does not allow keeping Muslims as slaves and also do not allow marrrige to non muslims. Do you have a source for this?

Hey take it up with the source.

Woah.. I'm not gonna lie, as much as I wanted Africa to be revamped.. I was starting to think it was resigned to becoming a meme.. but this has surpassed even my wildest dreams . You guys keep outdoing yourselves with each DD and I honestly cannot wait to play HF.

I just have three minor suggestions in terms of tweaks (which you can feel free to ignore):

A) Cyrenaica should be made a full integral duchy of Egypt (as several before me have already stated), this could be implemented only at specific starting dates if people insist as a compromise, although it is considered a part of Egypt in EU4.
B) The border of western Mali and the Canaries should be pushed out further west, I've always found it rather arbitrary in how it has been cut off the way it is! Best case scenario this includes a coastline for a Malian Empire which enables fleets to move through (perhaps with a tech limit before this could occur which others have previously suggested), or worst case scenario its outline is visible but it is impassible- similar to Burma or Siberia.
C) I believe that the Kingdom of Africa should be renamed to either the Kingdom of Libya or the Kingdom of Tripolitania. I believe that Tripolitania would have a greater sense of legitimacy as there is now a sea-lane with this name and it was a historically-accurate name for the region, whereas Libya was a Roman name used to refer to Africa as a whole, and the name didn't take hold for the country of Libya until the Italian colonization. I have thrown both names in though, for the sake of argument.

Thank you for your time, and thanks again for the great work!

Muslim men historically married non-Muslims, and I'm pretty sure Muslim kings and/or even Caliphs had Christian/Hindu wives. In the Ottoman period, yes, they did not permit Muslims to be slaves but that's not to say pagans couldn't capture Muslims and use them as slaves.

I have a question that relates to exporting a save to EU4... What if we manage to wipe out Islam before it can spread in a major way outside of the Middle East? With the addition of Central Africa and the expansion in West and North Africa those regions will now be affected, but what about places like Indonesia and the East Indies? Say we wipe out Islam in the first few centuries before Islam spreads through India and into further east? Is there a way to make that reflect in the exported game?

I don't know if this question was answered in a previous dev diary or not: Is there any chance you could allow reformed pagans (Aside from Zunists) to join the Hermetic Society?
Or perhaps create a separate, Pagan version? Maybe even refer to them as Druids, Witch Doctors, and Medicine Men (I know, the last one is Native American, but I hope you understand my point).

If you take the Astrology feature when reforming, you can join the Hermetic society.

You know with Epirus overhauled I can’t help but feel Albanians are gonna be added. Especially since Coptics after all these years have been added, I hope their in the byzantine group, and while were at it with the culture revolution going on with holy fury I hope the Alan’s are put in their own group or Iranian group.
