Europa Universalis IV - Development Diary 4th of April 2023 - Achievements

Hello everybody! Welcome to today’s Developer Diary!

My name is Arnau, I am an Internal QA Tester working at Tinto. And I'm here with @Pintu to bring you this week's Dev Diary where we will focus on one of our favorite topics, the new Achievements that will accompany 1.35.

The idea we have about achievements is to try to give a new inspiration or goal to our beloved players. Some of them are to provide additional depth and difficulty of the campaign and others are paths that will diverge from your normal gameplay experience. We have tried to give a little bit of everything in these new achievements and we hope you will enjoy them.
With the focus of Domination being on some of the major powers of the time it was a bit more difficult than usual to find suitable Achievements, since a lot of these nations are already covered with a fair share of Achievements.
So here is the list of the achievements we at Tinto came up with for the 1.35 Patch.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Frankfurt to the Andes
From Frankfurt to the Andes.png

Starting as Frankfurt, form Jerusalem, and then form the Inca while owning Mallorca.

Let’s start with a small history Lesson for this one. There once was a small group of people in the Imperial City of Frankfurt. After being kicked out of the City because of rebellious behavior they did find asylum on the Balearic Islands where they quickly established themselves as Pirates to live in true freedom. This newfound Freedom brough to a variety of new shores, but one place inspired them more than anything, the Holy City of Jerusalem. From there they spread their beliefs to the New World, where they gave refuge to expelled People from all over the world. With these people, and some inspiration found while looking into the wisdom of the Sun, they swiftly drafted a new plan to ensure their everlasting legacy. And so the Inti State of Jerusalem was born.
What? That sounds like a fantasy story to you? You better brush up on your history lessons then!
Jokes aside, this Achievement was born out of the Grandest LAN last year and the participants from our Studio might have joined a Cult in the process and this is the payment that is expected from us now.

Mehmet's Ambition

Starting as The Ottomans, own or have Core Eyalets own all the provinces required to form the Roman Empire before 1500.

Do you want to prove to everyone who is the true Successor of the Roman Empire? Make the Conqueror proud by establishing yourself as the true Roman Emperor Sultan.

Triple the Rome

As Russia, be the Emperor of China and the HRE.

You might ask yourself what there is to aim for as a mighty emperor. Obviously a second emperor title! Or two…

No Country for Old Tercios

As Spain have Reformed Tercios, 33 Tercio Units, and control 3 Great Power capitals at the same time.

Gonzalo, get the pike! It’s time to show them how to manage this. I think a third of the World should be ours.

All Blue
All Blue.png

As Portugal, all Europe is owned by you or blue European countries that exist in 1444.

All the good things in life are blue. The sky, the sea and even Portugal. Live out your dream to find the All Blue! On your Journey you will find people who share the same Dream.

Stardust Crusaders

As Japan have the Land of the Christian Sun reform while Palestine and Cairo are Christian.

"Oh, you're approaching me? Instead of running away, you're coming straight to me?”

Copium Wars

Starting and playing as Ming, own the Britain region.

Don’t worry, they are just here to teach you about Tea.

Brentry

Starting as England, form the Angevin Kingdom and enact all the Acts of Crown parliamentary issues.

Guess who's back. And now with an even fresher color, new ideas and the desire to take it all around. Assert your claim to the french throne and guide Europe to your Dream of a true union.

The Reapers

Starting as Aragon, be a Peasant Republic and have Madrid and Paris owned by any Peasant Republic.

We are peaceful people who want to bring you freedom. What, you don't want to embrace our system? Well, we have other tools to make you see reason.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, that’s all for today! Since we are close to release this Dev Diary is a rather short one, since there is not much left to cover for this Updates Cycle.
In next week's Dev Diary we will talk about the Changelog for the coming 1.35 Update. We hope you are as excited as we are for the Release of the 1.35 Patch and Domination in just two weeks from now.

That Ottoman achi is going to be coalition hell. All of Iberia, France and Italy in 56 years??

Also admin hell. Is there even enough to core all of it in that time? Since you dont have to core it, 600% OE incoming?
Did you read it? It allows for core eyalets as well.

I really think the Copium Wars achievement should be Ming OR Qing.

Also, a lot of these achievements are a bit too memey, guaranteeing individual campaigns for every single achievement. My favourite playthroughs are ones that can stack multiple achievements in one run, but naturally, without having to cheese. I prefer more relaxed games, where I don't have to stress out over getting hard achievements. Most of these achievements seem too difficult for it to be fun for me.
If Qing is allowed, a possible cheat is to conquer Manchuria as England, then culture flip. Probably easier than starting as Ming.

Totally agree with your second point though.

it’s good。
But why the south china unit tier 4 looks don’t like Chinese culture, their tier 4 unit looks like the people living in the indochina .
I hope can remake the tier 4 unit. Let it look like chinese.

Why is Ming the target for Copium Wars? Like I get it, its a meme achievement, but why not just have it be "Start as a Manchu Tag - > Form Qing - > Own All of England"? You know, considering the Qing were the ones who actually fought the Opium Wars...?

Very weird.

The icon . There have three imperial crown ,one of them belongs Qing,This is a Manchou style hat。It's not even a Chinese crown.
very weird too.

Hello and thanks for your update on the achievements! Really like the memeish achievements XD
Also a few personal complaints though :(
I think that some achievements have been kinda tedious to get, which usually have requirements like Start as XXX (tag) and conquer many provinces ACROSS HALF THE WORLD. I'm personally OK with the starting tag requirements but the other parts of the achievements (e.g., conquering lands FAR away) are just tortures to me. I'm a fanatic for achievement runs. I've gained all the CK2 achievements and am hunting for EU4 achievements (new to the forum and not sure whether my owned games and achievements can be displayed correctly). But due to the former reason, the journey has been such a great pain. Every game has a similar routine. I start a new game, conquer half the world, and get a single achievement, with ~20 boring hours spent (the first 5-10 hours are usually interesting though). Hence I wonder if we could reduce such kind of achievements in the future updates or just warp the requirements. For example, the requirements for Copium Wars could be Starting and playing as Ming, become the main productor of tea and own a company province in Britain region. I deem that such requirements are both interesting and less labouring.
Anyway, thanks for your efforts for making the game more interesting!

There are many more blue countries in 1444. Portugal is a relatively dark blue, so you have to also include other dark blue countries and light blue countries to even that out. Here is a map with the country colors in Europe for reference:
View attachment 964104
Imereti for example is also still in Europe in eu4
How many of the blue countries actually survive long enough for you to get strong and ally/protect them on the way to the achievement? I feel that only France, Venice, Sweden and maybe some HRE minors.

The worse part of it is that we have a full 52 pages of suggestions in the dedicated achievement suggestion thread...
For the first time, I'm not excited to try out any of the proposed achievements (expect Ottomans for the challenge).

You can then get The Oracle of Pachacamac if it's still there, or get force-converted. In theory you can probably also go for A Question of Faith with advisors or intentionally tanking legitimacy to get desired religion pretenders and then raising it after, though that's way more of a headache than just forcing a dude to force convert you. Protecting the oracle in a dedicated vassal doesn't seem awful, but that does involve getting to the new world in a timely manner as Frankfurt.
The oracle or force converting only works if you are already pagan. But then you already fulfill the requirement for forming Inca. Inca only has the requirement that you have to be pagan. You automatically get converted to Inti if you form them.

Yeah, most will die before you reach them, but you can release some of them later to reduce AE and avoid having to core that area yourself

I'm so disappointed. This was the patch to make enjoyable achievements, because it focuses on the biggest and most played and easy nations. Who in its right mind wants to do the Frankfurt one ? I can see the pain just by reading it, oh, i will do it, i mostly play for achievements. But will it be fun ? Or enjoyable, i can tell right now that it won't. And i'm tired of those starts with a tiny nation and go half a world conquest for a pun, it's terrible, especially since you allowed AI to dev provinces. My last one was Australia-Hungary, it was so funny to invade the Commonwealth who had the Hungarian provinces, defending them by a 500K army and being allied to Spain an Portugal with armies as large as them. So cool. But understand me, i'm not against hard achievements, i think every player must have his fun, even if it's like 0.5% of the playerbase, but can't you make once again some to explore those new mission trees like you did with Austria and Spain ? To use the mechanics, to build strong navies with those new unique ships ? Achievements focused on playing tall and with a lot of diplomacy to simply go with the runs of most of the players ? I know France has a lot of achievements already, but i do believe every players of EU4 have played them at least once, and a lot of us likes to go back to it, couldn't you please us with a new one ? Those are not the worst i've seen, but i believe those changes to major countries will make some of the old ones even harder. I think right now half of them are only for masochists, it could have been good to add some wich are reachable for the average player.

Exactly. Plus, they could've even have it feature a "le funny" pun (Frankfurt in French is Francfort, as in "Frank fort" even though the etymology is different). Honestly I'd rather have The 52 Garhs: Part 2 than whatever the achievement they are adding is.

Could do something with building forts in France as Frankfurt or something like that too. Forts in provinces with rivers or something. Not many fort-linked achievements.
