Europa Universalis IV - Development Diary 4th of April 2023 - Achievements

Hello everybody! Welcome to today’s Developer Diary!

My name is Arnau, I am an Internal QA Tester working at Tinto. And I'm here with @Pintu to bring you this week's Dev Diary where we will focus on one of our favorite topics, the new Achievements that will accompany 1.35.

The idea we have about achievements is to try to give a new inspiration or goal to our beloved players. Some of them are to provide additional depth and difficulty of the campaign and others are paths that will diverge from your normal gameplay experience. We have tried to give a little bit of everything in these new achievements and we hope you will enjoy them.
With the focus of Domination being on some of the major powers of the time it was a bit more difficult than usual to find suitable Achievements, since a lot of these nations are already covered with a fair share of Achievements.
So here is the list of the achievements we at Tinto came up with for the 1.35 Patch.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Frankfurt to the Andes
From Frankfurt to the Andes.png

Starting as Frankfurt, form Jerusalem, and then form the Inca while owning Mallorca.

Let’s start with a small history Lesson for this one. There once was a small group of people in the Imperial City of Frankfurt. After being kicked out of the City because of rebellious behavior they did find asylum on the Balearic Islands where they quickly established themselves as Pirates to live in true freedom. This newfound Freedom brough to a variety of new shores, but one place inspired them more than anything, the Holy City of Jerusalem. From there they spread their beliefs to the New World, where they gave refuge to expelled People from all over the world. With these people, and some inspiration found while looking into the wisdom of the Sun, they swiftly drafted a new plan to ensure their everlasting legacy. And so the Inti State of Jerusalem was born.
What? That sounds like a fantasy story to you? You better brush up on your history lessons then!
Jokes aside, this Achievement was born out of the Grandest LAN last year and the participants from our Studio might have joined a Cult in the process and this is the payment that is expected from us now.

Mehmet's Ambition
Mehmet's Ambition.png

Starting as The Ottomans, own or have Core Eyalets own all the provinces required to form the Roman Empire before 1500.

Do you want to prove to everyone who is the true Successor of the Roman Empire? Make the Conqueror proud by establishing yourself as the true Roman Emperor Sultan.

Triple the Rome
Triple the Rome.png

As Russia, be the Emperor of China and the HRE.

You might ask yourself what there is to aim for as a mighty emperor. Obviously a second emperor title! Or two…

No Country for Old Tercios
No Country for Old Tercios.png

As Spain have Reformed Tercios, 33 Tercio Units, and control 3 Great Power capitals at the same time.

Gonzalo, get the pike! It’s time to show them how to manage this. I think a third of the World should be ours.

All Blue
All Blue.png

As Portugal, all Europe is owned by you or blue European countries that exist in 1444.

All the good things in life are blue. The sky, the sea and even Portugal. Live out your dream to find the All Blue! On your Journey you will find people who share the same Dream.

Stardust Crusaders

As Japan have the Land of the Christian Sun reform while Palestine and Cairo are Christian.

"Oh, you're approaching me? Instead of running away, you're coming straight to me?”

Copium Wars

Starting and playing as Ming, own the Britain region.

Don’t worry, they are just here to teach you about Tea.

Brentry

Starting as England, form the Angevin Kingdom and enact all the Acts of Crown parliamentary issues.

Guess who's back. And now with an even fresher color, new ideas and the desire to take it all around. Assert your claim to the french throne and guide Europe to your Dream of a true union.

The Reapers

Starting as Aragon, be a Peasant Republic and have Madrid and Paris owned by any Peasant Republic.

We are peaceful people who want to bring you freedom. What, you don't want to embrace our system? Well, we have other tools to make you see reason.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, that’s all for today! Since we are close to release this Dev Diary is a rather short one, since there is not much left to cover for this Updates Cycle.
In next week's Dev Diary we will talk about the Changelog for the coming 1.35 Update. We hope you are as excited as we are for the Release of the 1.35 Patch and Domination in just two weeks from now.

Could you share those sentiments with the vic 3 team?

Also, great job on the anime references, but now I have to go read through many dev diaries to find out how Russia can be christian and eastern/dharmic faith at the same time.

Since the expansion hasn't released yet, I have faint hopes that some of these achievements can be tweaked before it goes on sale. In that spirit, here's my breakdown of this set:

--From Frankfurt to the Andes: Starting as Frankfurt, form Jerusalem, and then form the Inca while owning Mallorca.

This has nothing to do with the content of the Domination expansion and, in addition, requires extremely unnatural play. Others have suggested tying it to France, and I agree. How about "Starting as Frankfurt, form France and complete (some new mission) from its tree" instead.

--Mehmet's Ambition: Starting as The Ottomans, own or have Core Eyalets own all the provinces required to form the Roman Empire before 1500.

Oh joy. It's "True Heir of Timur" all over again. I honestly don't see how to complete this much blobbing so fast without using save-scumming and extremely distasteful exploits (which I won't describe here). At the very least, extend the date to 1550.

--Triple the Rome: As Russia, be the Emperor of China and the HRE.

Another achievement that requires a great deal of blobbing as well as at least two odd religion flips. I get that some players are enamored of tag and religion flipping, but this doesn't really tie into Domination well. A better achievement would be "Starting as Muscovy, complete the Russian mission tree."

--No Country for Old Tercios: As Spain have Reformed Tercios, 33 Tercio Units, and control 3 Great Power capitals at the same time.

This one is fine.

--All Blue: As Portugal, all Europe is owned by you or blue European countries that exist in 1444.

Once again, this is a mission that requires a very large amount of blobbing. One or two of those per patch make sense, but there are far too many this time. Runs that are near world conquests get tedious for many players, myself included.

--Stardust Crusaders: As Japan have the Land of the Christian Sun reform while Palestine and Cairo are Christian.

Since you're going to have to be the one to Christianize Palestine and Cairo, this too requires a lot of blobbing. Alternatives would be nice.

--Copium Wars: Starting and playing as Ming, own the Britain region.

Yet another near-WC. See all the previous comments.

--Brentry: Starting as England, form the Angevin Kingdom and enact all the Acts of Crown parliamentary issues.

This one I actually like.

--The Reapers: Starting as Aragon, be a Peasant Republic and have Madrid and Paris owned by any Peasant Republic.

Also reasonable.

My overall reaction: ugh. This set is going to be a chore to complete instead of fun. Lions of the North had a more diverse and balanced set of achievements.

It can't. You either become the emperor of the HRE first as a christian and then pass Erbkaisertum which allows you to keep your title after converting or you first become eastern/pagan to get the mandate of heaven CB(dharmic doesn't help) and then get the mandate or at least start the war for it and then convert to a christian religion which is eligible to become emperor of the HRE. You can stay emperor of China with whichever religion and being emperor of china doesn't make you ineligible to become emperor of the HRE

I hate most of these. Tsar of all slavs still isn't an achievement after all these years either.

I am a big fan of EU4 but I am so disappointed after reading the list of new achievements! Most of them require such a large amount of blobbing which does not make really fun. They are made for min/max-players who have time to play all day long EU4 for many days but not for normal players. They do not encourage the player to explore new features and require a very immerson-breaking way of playing, e.g. Portuguese-super-blob in Europe while real Portugal stayed quite peaceful in European teritorries compared to other kingdoms or this totally crazy Frankfurt run which is just unfun. Players are encouraged to make some disgusting religion and tag switches instead of rewarding playing the new mission trees and content of the DLC. The new achievements in my eyes emphasize the wrong parts of the game and are balanced in a very strange way: The hardest achievements should always be doable for average players who try a bit harder than normal (and no necessary use of exploits, savescum or dependency of rng) . Pro players can do better anyway in all situations - that's nothing which is somehow rewardable. Achievements can and some should be hard but they should always make the player to play the game not work the game! I am very concerned that PDX Tinto lost somehow connection towards there main player and target group - not a good sign for quality of future works.
I'm a player who take a lot of motivation from playing towards achievements (284 of 345) and I have to admit that I own some which require a playstyle I don't like (e.g. world conquer, one faith, true timur) but the list of today is already demotivating myself to play the game to be honest.

I'm not sure how hard it is for you to implement achievements but if it would still be possible then I have a few ideas for achievements that I would love to see. I think they would play well with the dlc and be more easily appreciated by a larger portion of the eu4 player base than some of the currently posted ones.

Land of the setting sun:
As Japan own all of North America, South America, Greenland, and Iceland but no provinces in Europe

Emperor of Mankind:
As any country own the whole world, have 100% Militarization, and be Catholic

One Emperor to rule them all:
As emperor of China have all surviving nations as tributaries

Celestial Knowledge:
As emperor of China, share knowledge with a European nation

The great EU:
All provinces in Europe are owned by one nation, have one religion, and have one culture

Westernization:
As Byzantium own no provinces outside of Italy, France, or Spain

Very disappointing list of achievements. Like the Ottomans and Angevin ones but the rest are not doing much for my interest in this expansion.

Achievements should be challenging but to varying degrees. There are a lot of conquer a huge amount of land achievements that don't have much creativity beyond a meme title.

After a good night of sleep, i realised that i have more to say. And i'm frustrated, because it looks like Paradox Tinto lost track of things. This list of achievements starts with an incredibly hard one, and something like a private joke, a reference for you guys. We love you, you're doing great work and we are encline to allow the fun if it weren't that difficult. Nobody cares about that reference. This is terrible. You have to undesrtand that for most of the experienced players, achievements are a way to put a goal on a campaign. And right now, at this very minute, before the new batch, there is a LOT of achievements, and that's just the beginning, a lot of those achievements require a knowledge of the game, some skill and veterancy that are beyond most of the users and don't forget it, it requires time, so much time. I'll use myself as an exemple, i've played the game for more than four thousand hours, i have 322 achievements so 93% of them. I have left on the list something like : "The third way" and "An unlikely candidate". You can do both as Mzab. And to be honnest, i'm quite certain they will become harder because of the upgrade for Spain, Portugal and Ottomans. And i'm sure i'll hate this run, because it'll need like fifty restarts and a prayer to the Rngod to be on the right tracks, and something like a hundred hours. And there's a lot of horrible achievements like that, i've done them, i didn't enjoy most of them. You don't have to make more of them, we already have ways to burn our time with incredibly hard runs. Not a lot of players have as much time as i do to play this game, and if they have some, i'm sure they'll prefer to use it on an Ottoman run rather than on an Hisn Kayfa one. With this extension, i've said it, you have the opportunity to make good achievements focused on the most loved and played nations. You can make us play our favourite nations till 1821 with pleasure and a smile on our faces. You decided to make something called "Victorian three" wich requires to play an absolutely uninteresting, no mission tree, nobody gives a damn nation to tech 32, but won't make an achievement to finish the French mission tree ? Seriously ? I've read all the comments, everybody seems disappointed. Why achievements must absolutely be difficult ? Final thing, nine achievements. That's very low, you have everything wrong, you could have made fifty achievements, as long as they were focused on big nations, and with a reachable goal, everybody would have loved it. Those achievements would have given us purpose and an excuse to play the big ones, because that's everybody's guilty pleasure. Right now you have failed us. Can you please rectify the shot before the launch ?
