Europa Universalis IV - Development Diary 4th of April 2023 - Achievements

Hello everybody! Welcome to today’s Developer Diary!

My name is Arnau, I am an Internal QA Tester working at Tinto. And I'm here with @Pintu to bring you this week's Dev Diary where we will focus on one of our favorite topics, the new Achievements that will accompany 1.35.

The idea we have about achievements is to try to give a new inspiration or goal to our beloved players. Some of them are to provide additional depth and difficulty of the campaign and others are paths that will diverge from your normal gameplay experience. We have tried to give a little bit of everything in these new achievements and we hope you will enjoy them.
With the focus of Domination being on some of the major powers of the time it was a bit more difficult than usual to find suitable Achievements, since a lot of these nations are already covered with a fair share of Achievements.
So here is the list of the achievements we at Tinto came up with for the 1.35 Patch.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Frankfurt to the Andes

Starting as Frankfurt, form Jerusalem, and then form the Inca while owning Mallorca.

Let’s start with a small history Lesson for this one. There once was a small group of people in the Imperial City of Frankfurt. After being kicked out of the City because of rebellious behavior they did find asylum on the Balearic Islands where they quickly established themselves as Pirates to live in true freedom. This newfound Freedom brough to a variety of new shores, but one place inspired them more than anything, the Holy City of Jerusalem. From there they spread their beliefs to the New World, where they gave refuge to expelled People from all over the world. With these people, and some inspiration found while looking into the wisdom of the Sun, they swiftly drafted a new plan to ensure their everlasting legacy. And so the Inti State of Jerusalem was born.
What? That sounds like a fantasy story to you? You better brush up on your history lessons then!
Jokes aside, this Achievement was born out of the Grandest LAN last year and the participants from our Studio might have joined a Cult in the process and this is the payment that is expected from us now.

Mehmet's Ambition
Mehmet's Ambition.png

Starting as The Ottomans, own or have Core Eyalets own all the provinces required to form the Roman Empire before 1500.

Do you want to prove to everyone who is the true Successor of the Roman Empire? Make the Conqueror proud by establishing yourself as the true Roman Emperor Sultan.

Triple the Rome
Triple the Rome.png

As Russia, be the Emperor of China and the HRE.

You might ask yourself what there is to aim for as a mighty emperor. Obviously a second emperor title! Or two…

No Country for Old Tercios
No Country for Old Tercios.png

As Spain have Reformed Tercios, 33 Tercio Units, and control 3 Great Power capitals at the same time.

Gonzalo, get the pike! It’s time to show them how to manage this. I think a third of the World should be ours.

All Blue
All Blue.png

As Portugal, all Europe is owned by you or blue European countries that exist in 1444.

All the good things in life are blue. The sky, the sea and even Portugal. Live out your dream to find the All Blue! On your Journey you will find people who share the same Dream.

Stardust Crusaders
Stardust Crusaders.png

As Japan have the Land of the Christian Sun reform while Palestine and Cairo are Christian.

"Oh, you're approaching me? Instead of running away, you're coming straight to me?”

Copium Wars

Starting and playing as Ming, own the Britain region.

Don’t worry, they are just here to teach you about Tea.

Brentry

Starting as England, form the Angevin Kingdom and enact all the Acts of Crown parliamentary issues.

Guess who's back. And now with an even fresher color, new ideas and the desire to take it all around. Assert your claim to the french throne and guide Europe to your Dream of a true union.

The Reapers
The Reapers.png

Starting as Aragon, be a Peasant Republic and have Madrid and Paris owned by any Peasant Republic.

We are peaceful people who want to bring you freedom. What, you don't want to embrace our system? Well, we have other tools to make you see reason.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, that’s all for today! Since we are close to release this Dev Diary is a rather short one, since there is not much left to cover for this Updates Cycle.
In next week's Dev Diary we will talk about the Changelog for the coming 1.35 Update. We hope you are as excited as we are for the Release of the 1.35 Patch and Domination in just two weeks from now.

The worse part of it is that we have a full 52 pages of suggestions in the dedicated achievement suggestion thread...
For the first time, I'm not excited to try out any of the proposed achievements (expect Ottomans for the challenge).
As if the devs actually ever listen to the community on even the smallest, most common-sense things

They actually do. They added Salt into Portugal's provinces, like I've proposed, and I'm grateful for that.

I know that there are a lot of bug reports and issues that remain unadressed for years, but Tinto seems more eager to listen to the community's feedback, compared to the previous team.

I think the players of the game are great in using bugs and exploits, and the achievemnts und and the devs are supporting and following the way. So we have a game that is good for some casual players, and for some ultra nerds, but the 50% middle of the players are left alone

As an alternative to another conquer england one - for Ming something like 'as ming fall to an opm with no mandate, tributaries or vassals and then reconquer all of china and reclaim the mandate' might be a fun run. Or even just one to survive one of their nasty disasters.

'Conquer Britain and Ireland' achievements aren't the best, but I don't think the solution is to replace them with 'Play bad on purpose' ones.

Achievements should be somewhat difficult without having to be tedious. Most of the ones we already have are straight up chores. I don't see why were adding even worse ones.

For example, I love these:

"As Augsburg, subsidize 3 Great Powers 20% of their income while having less than 20 provinces.",

"Starting as Navarra, ensure that most of Iberia is Basque culture before the Age of Absolutism."

"Starting as a Custom Nation of up to 400 points in the British Region, own New York, San Francisco, Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Hong Kong and Yokohama by 1524.11.11."

I get that some people like the (anime) memes. I'm an anime enjoyer too. But a lot of these are just extremely annoying and honestly kind of cringe. Not looking forward to getting 100% Achievements again. The Brentry, Mehmet's Ambition, Triple the Rome, and Stardust Crusaders do seem fun though.

I think regarding this batch of achievments, i am more inclined to lean towards the „Respectfully Disagree“- side. I use achievments mainly as goals for a campaign, and i do not have a problem with achievments that require a long campaign or much conquering. For me it is an incentive to play a longer campaign and not quit the run in the 1600´s. I like the ideas regarding the new content, that were shown in the developers diarys, so i would like more achievments that require the use of the new mechanics or the completion of mission trees.

I do understand, that most tags, that get an overhaul, already have several country-specific achievments, but even then nine achievments are rather few. As an exampel: I did hope for a achievment for one of the chinese revolter tags, like „Shun“. They are touched in this Dlc, but if you want achievments there are rather few reasons to let this tags spawn and play as them. Another example would be a „Complete the mission tree as france“ or „the ottomans“(or something regarding theire decadence disaster).

the Inti achievement in particular is a great distillation of how annoying the company's fawning for MP players is. Oh someone at the Grandest LAN did something ludicrous? Genuinely, sincerely, why should anyone in the wider playerbase care?
For sure. The most satisfying achievements are those that fit a natural organic playstyle for a given country and come off as a storytelling tool.

The achievements this round are the most egregious ones yet. Mehmed's Ambition?? He BARELY downed Constantinople (at least according to Netflix)...pretty sure he got some humble pie after that.

It's like the family guy episode of South Park where the manatees are pushing random joke subparts for a family guy joke flashback to be made. Were the Wayans brothers hired as achievement designers? Why not just be more transparent about it and make an achievement called "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood"?

Speaking for myself (but also probably echoing a sizeable part of persistent players) achievements drive the vast majority of our campaigns. Why would you be so bankrupt in your storytelling that you would set these types of achievements as a North Star? I get that it's a common industry practice to pepper games with achievements so people don't just try to rush your campaign in 10 hours but keep playing past the refund window. Gone are the days of super Nintendo where you buy a game, beat a game, and that's it.

However it looks like the lean mean meme achievement machine at Paradox has taken a page from memelord Elon Musk and made them more and more cringey. I've got a sizeable amount of achievements and probably in another year or two (faster without a job and a life) I could get all of them....but why bother? To chase the memegic dragon (did I just seed another achievement idea...argh)?

If this is the way to keep subscriptions going at least be transparent about it.

You have made a wonderful game and the closest thing we will get to a simulator of the early modern era. It's an awesome vehicle to learn history. Making them attainable only in Ironman takes the cow dung away. Achievements used to be such a great way to branch out and explore other coutries and histories you wouldn't otherwise. Now the manatees have taken over. You can do better.

Don't put all of your one faith in the true heir of Timur until you've eaten all your greens.

Feel free to consider this diatribe my job application for the meme achievement team.

It's sad that this is the new normal for what players would be "ok" with.
I think it would be a reasonably challenging achievement but more 'natural' than the other one, as you would be playing in the region anyway and no culture shifting is required. Franconia can be spawned from separatist rebels and France can be whittled down over time with one or two decent allies or yourself if you are strong enough. Even if you don't get to them before a lot of the minor cores expire Gascony, Provence and Brittany (and possibly Burgundy) will all have cores remaining.

Charles the fifth was burgundian not spanish
you're right, yet these important rulers are being added and he isn't. He was an important ruler of the Burgundy duchy and ruled over Spain and Austria. So either you want me to be absolutely politically correct and say add an event that gives Burgundy the leader but then Spain the ability to PU Burgundy and Austria without even having to lift a finger? or just give Charles the Fifth to Austria? because his mom was Spanish while his father was Austrian and Burgundian hence why he was born in Burgundy.
