Stellaris Dev Diary #49 - Graphics & Portraits

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris development diary. This development diary will cover improvements made to graphics in the Heinlein update and new species portraits coming in both Heinlein and the Leviathans Story Pack.

Improved Bloom Shader (Free Feature)
One of the features we really wanted to get in for release but never could was the improved bloom shader. Bloom is now days a dirty word, and has a bad reputation from previous generations overuse. But when used correctly it really makes thing look amazing. A game like Stellaris where so many things are glowing, ship windows and engines, stars, laser weapons etc. We had most of the code done before release, but once we switch over, everything in the game which was glowing needed to be tweaked, and in some cases needed code.
During Heinlein we had some time for this and now its all fixed so the star burn bright and the lasers glow.

We also spent a little bit of time improving the planet city textures.

New Portraits
Both before and after the release of Stellaris we've received a lot of different requests for new species portraits. Among the more frequent requests are to make more 'alien' aliens, and this is something we tried to address before release, adding a large number of non-human shaped aliens. Another common request, that I felt we did *not* address, was for more 'cute', 'pretty' and 'humanlike' aliens. Sure, we have your basic humans and there's the ever-lovable space foxes, but we've noticed that quite a few people tend to play *only* as humans or *only* as space foxes, and we wanted to give these people some more options to play with. For this reason we decided to do a new round of portraits, with the work split between 'cuties' and 'humanlike' aliens.

Humanoid Portraits Pack (Free Feature)
Humanlike (or 'rubber forehead' as they're sometimes derisively called) aliens is something we intially avoided putting into Stellaris, focusing on more alien species to give a sense of the galaxy as a diverse place full of different lifeforms. However, I felt that in doing so we overlooked the fact that there is quite a few people who actually want to play as, and encounter, more humanlike aliens, as they are something that we as humans can more easily recognize and relate to than say, a sentient crab. For this reason we decided to create a new species class called 'humanoids' that is essentially mammalians that look more like humans than other mammalians, and made 4 new portraits for this category that will be given to everyone in the free Heinlein update. Humanoids do not have their own city graphics or ships as they are essentially mammalians and mostly only have their own group for interface sorting purposes. When making portraits going into the future, we will continue to focus primarily on 'alien' aliens, and humanlike ones will always be very much in the minority, but they will still be there for those that want them.

Cuties Portraits Pack (Paid Feature)
The cuties, on the other hand, are simply something we very much know that many people (including myself) wanted: More cute species. We decided to focus on adding them to the species classes that didn't already have something cute, and also to species classes that had fewer portraits than the others.

That's all for this week! Next week, Heinlein and the Leviathans Story Pack will be coming out, so we are now officially all tapped out on content to show you for them. However, be sure to watch the release stream and today's Extraterrestial Thursday stream for further previews and sneak peeks. We will also be posting the 16-page patch notes sometime during next week, so keep your eyes peeled for that as well.

Don't forget our Extraterrestrial Thursday Livestream - Today (Thursday) at 15:00CEST on https://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive

In that case, by the goddess, I'd like my favorite species of blue skinned tentacle headed aliens
There's a great mod for that already, as well as one for.... oh bosh'tet!

I honestly love this, i love this game and i think that you guys are only touching the surface.

Big brains are nice, cuties and elves are very disappointing. I wish I knew the game would turn into a childish cartoon when I was buying its draft version in summer.

Have the devs shed any light on what will happen after Heimlein 1.3 and its Leviathan DLC (other than making sure the DLC launch goes well :p)? I'm guessing there will be more cosmetic packs in between, but since they advertise this as a 'story pack', will there also be a bigger 'expansion pack' in the future?

They did a small story pack so they could put more focus on rebalancing in the patch side of things for Heinlein. The next patch is Banks as in the Culture series, possibly a hint for its content. Most likely they will start working on a proper expansion next but if it will be accompanying Banks or not I havent heard anything.

Thanks! Can't wait.

Klingons, Vulcans, butterfly people and cute lizards coming along giant space monsters and black-hole-orbiting Death Star things. Can't ask for anything more.

Finally, an alien that can save me money on my car insurance!

I am so glad I'm not the first one who immediately thought of the Geico Gecko. I hope there's a green option for the leader colors!

Here is a question. Is there ever going to be a way to force spawn/perma-remove the stater races? Y'know i will be honest here besides the two human factions none of them bear any meaning for me to play as when i could just go and design my own. And when im playing as the Commonwealth of Man and Sol does not spawn at all, it makes me very sad because then i have no choice but to roleplay that the wormholes teleported us to a different galaxy instead of a bretty cool fight for the heart and soul of mankind in space.

Similar, related problem: I hate starting up as humans, on Sol, and then finding *another* Sol system with humans on it. One time, the second Sol system was two systems away, which meant that I didn't lose much, because I just couldn't keep the roleplay aspect going with two Sols (especially since the other one was engaged in World War Two, which is a really nice touch, by the way). But starting up a human game and then finding a Sol system halfway across the galaxy is a serious problem for me. I haven't even found any mods that fix this. Is there going to be a way to *not* have another Sol system spawn if we're starting in the Sol system ourselves? Is there anyone who knows of, or plans to make, a mod to do this?

It won't repeat as long as there are unique portraits still unused. So, you'd only likely run into that on the biggest map and bigger ones found in mods. Having more species portraits from mods will allow for more before it reaches the point where it has to re-use portraits.

Also, I wonder if the bug where uplifted species portraits change to the first portrait of their species class is fixed? Like an uplifted mammalian will change the portrait to human, an avian will turn into the avian_1 portrait and so on.

One, is there any confirmation that it won't repeat as long as there are unique portraits still unused?

Two, I've never encountered this bug----is it rare?

Oh, one other thing----the anomaly where you find a memorial that aliens erected to another species that they regret wiping out---is that a reference to Ender's Game? I've been wondering about that ever since I first got the anomaly. It's my favorite sci-fi book, and even the castle in the image looked like it might have been a part of the reference, so I'm just dying to know!

Lastly, on the humanoids being "too humanoid"----I think Stellaris borrows too much from space operas *not* to have the humanoids in there. I like the change.

there is the one sol system mod http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=682426091 but idk if it still works anymore.

there was an episode of star trek like that where they came across another world that, while admittedly not looking like earth, had a history mostly identical to earths.

and another episode that had them coming across a planet that looked exactly like earth. admittedly it was for budget reasons i guess. but some non-canon material states that the planet was an earth from a parallel universe.

my point is sure you can just remove a second sol system but there are creative story ways to enjoy 2 sol systems without breaking rp lol.

unless specifically there should be only 1 sol system or the sol system is to close.

There's a certain sense of irony in this post that I'm not sure you were aware of when you were making it.

Not that I'd expect someone using "hurr durr childish cartoon game" as an argument to be aware of it.

This is awesome! I think we have plenty of "Alien-aliens" by now, so these will make very welcome additions to our galaxies.

The only thing that would make it better is if we get to manually select these portraits after uplifting or genetically engineering a species.
