Tinto Flavour #13 - 11th of April 2025 - Saxony

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Fridays in which we take a look at the flavourish content of the super-secret Project Caesar!

This Wednesday, we had a Tinto Talks related to the HRE, so it may be fitting to take a look today at another German country with unique flavour content: Saxony! Let’s start without further ado:

The County of Meissen, a possession of the powerful von Wettin dynasty, had its origins as an eastern march of the Holy Roman Empire in the lands of the Sorbs and other Slavic people that were rapidly Germanized. The land, densely forested in its origins, has proved to be really fertile, and the mild climate, especially near the Elbe river, has allowed the Saxons living there to develop a Wine culture.

The Ore Mountains, separating the country from the Bohemian Crown, are rich in minerals, especially Silver that fuels the economy of the County. However, its apparent richness is a double-edged sword, as the country is seen with greedy eyes by its neighbors, and they might try to conquer it. Despite the potential threats, Meissen thrives as a significant territory in Upper Saxony.

Over time, the von Wettin rule has further expanded Meissen’s influence and fortified it against external pressures. With its fertile lands, rich resources, and strategic location, it stands as a prominent entity in the Empire, attracting admiration and envy from its neighbors.

The County of Meissen is the one we recommend to get all the Saxony-related content, since it was the polity that ended up unifying the region of Upper Saxony:

As usual, take any UI, 2D and 3D art as WIP.

Here are the lands of Meissen, and its neighboring country, Landsberg:

Meissen starts with a semi-unique Government Reform that only a few countries in the HRE have:
Margraviate.jpg

And a couple of Estate Privileges for countries of German culture:
Right to Inherit.jpg

Magdeburg Rights.jpg

And a unique policy is available to German countries, as well:
Bergordnung.jpg

And a very important work of art:
Sachsenspiegel1.jpg

Sachsenspiegel2.jpg

And here some of the unique advances available for Meissen/Saxony, for different ages:
Advance Meissen Lion.jpg

Advance Meissen Groschen.jpg

Advance Saxon Court.jpg

Advance Furstenschule.jpg

Advance Meissner Porcelain.jpg

Let’s now take a look at some of the events available to Meissen.

Early on, this event will pop up:
The Acquisition of Landsberg.jpg

The land belong with us.jpg

Which will lead to this result:
Grossen Meissen.jpg

This event may also pop up:
A Gift from the Emperor.jpg

The second option is an alt-historical interesting one:
Meissner Groschen.jpg

We also have some late-game events, which are very fitting for a Saxony playthrough:
Johann Sebastian Bach.jpg

Or:
The Zwinger.jpg

Building Zwinger.jpg

Last, but not least, there's the possibility of unifying the Saxonian region into a proper tag:
Form Saxony.jpg

… And much more, but that’s all for today! Next week will be another intense week, since on Monday we will be taking a look at the Tinto Maps Feedback review of Western Africa; on Wednesday the Tinto Talks will be devoted to the Catholic religion and the Catholic Church IO; and on Thursday there will be new Tinto Flavour, about the Papal States (since next Friday it might be a somewhat important date for Christians, and a bank holiday in Spain). Cheers!

12 money for all that land seems kind off low, how easy is it to get 12 money? It should probably be some burden on your treasury, giving the players an actual choice: early on expansion but also debt or a steady growth with economic stability. Now it seems like just a token payment that doesn't even make it realistically worth it to sell for Landsberg.

I find the UI for the modifiers for the Magdeburg rights confusing. Does that mean the bonus from the rights only applies in certain ages and at other times there is no bonus? Or does it mean there are hidden bonuses that come up in other ages? If the former then I assume that list of conditions is an AND list rather than an OR list due to the context, but in other cases it's not going to be obvious.

After annexing Landsberg, getting the status of Elector, which in 1337 is held by another Saxony, Saxe-Wittenberg:

For other countries: You need to be of Saxon culture, be an Elector, and have a certain percentage (25% now) in the Lower Saxony and Upper Saxony areas.
May I suggest an event to have Saxe-Wittenberg elevated to the Electorate of Saxony if they get the electorate following the Golden Bull, as historically happened? Maybe even more broadly, if any of the Saxony-ies are elevated to the electorate? If the Golden Bull is enacted within the Holy Roman Empire IO and one of the Saxony-ies is an elector (historically Saxe-Wittenberg), that an event pops up allowing the tag to switch to the Saxony so that we can have a proper Electorate of Saxony. I don't know if this would have any meaningful gameplay changes (maybe Saxony has special events and such that would make such an even OP) for the region, but for flavor it would be nice to see the Electorate of Saxony rather than the Electorate of Saxe-Wittenberg until such time as they can conquer or inherit the enough of the other Saxony-ies.

It would seem odd that all of the historical electors would seem to have the correct name for their countries except for the Electorate of Saxony. It seems like the Electorate takes precedence over count, duke, margrave and King takes precedence over elector based on Bohemia and Saxe-Wittenberg.

Given that Meissen actually did purchase Landsberg in our history, I don't think it should be all that expensive. I wasn't able to find details on the price they paid, but it does not appear to have placed any undue burden on the treasury.
Wikipedia says they also had to help in a conflict against Magdeburg as part of the price, but I can't find any sources online.

I don't think there's much difference between Meissener, Meißener, Meissner and Meißner, but the standard spelling for someone/something from Meißen is "Meißner". "Meissener Porzellan" is the brand name for the porcelain now, but I'd personally vote for "Meißner Porzellan" as the generic term, and using "Meißner" for everything to be consistent.

Is the Bach event dictated by tag, or by location ownership? Given the text it seems like it should go to the owner of Leipzig but I'm not certain. Also does the Zwinger give its location based benefits of you don't have it as your capital? That's not imediately obvious based on the tooltips. If it is the "if capital" tag should be its own thing with a separate country tag similar to the local one, both indented. As is it makes me think you can bypass the increased noble power by simply not having it in your capital, but still produce cultural tradition and influence.

My understanding is that it's a very sloppy way of having it push you towards free trade, but since that SV was changed to only unlock in the Age of Reformation. I suspect they'll be changed to display as "not age or reformation or later".
