Tinto Flavour #9 - 7th of March 2025 - Hungary

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Fridays where we share with you the flavourish content of the super secret Project Caesar!

Today we will take a look at one of my favourite countries to playtest the game, the Kingdom of Hungary!:

For centuries, the great Kingdom of Hungary defended the border of Christendom from the pagans and heathens beyond it. Recent noble rebellions put this duty in danger, but thanks to the iron hand of King d’Angiò Karoly, the disgruntled nobles have been reined back under his rule and the Christian bastion is renewed and reinforced.

However, the future of Hungary is not to dwell in peace, as already new trouble is brewing in the southeast that will challenge the strength of the Regnum Marianum.

What fate awaits for the Kingdom of Hungary? Will it fall to the enemies of the faith? Or will it stand proud before the waves of those who seek its demise?

We are currently working to have a more settled dynastic flavour, but for the moment, the House of Anjou is taking its naming from the Italian variant of it, since it’s the main House, so take it as WIP; as any UI, 2D and 3D art, as usual.

Here is Hungary:
Hungary.png

And its starting diplomatic situation:
Diplomacy.png

Poland is allied, while Croatia is in a personal union. Not shown on the map (yet) is that Hungary is embargoing Austria, as a result of the pact made with Bohemia.

Hungary has a few interesting interesting starting privileges:
Monetary Fiefs.png

This is not a unique privilege, but a generic one that we created taking into account Hungary’s situation in 1337; a few countries across Europe also start with it enacted.

Invite German Settlers.png

We already showed this privilege in Tinto Flavour #1, if you remember.

By having it active, it may trigger this recurrent event:
Invite German Settlers2.png

Invite German Settlers3.png

Classical flavour Parliament:
Orszaggyules.png

And starting works of art:
Works of Art.png

Here are some interesting advances for Hungary:
Realm of Many Cultures.png

This advance helps Hungary manage all the different cultures it starts with and also portrays a historical policy followed by many Hungarian kings in the Middle Ages.

Cumans!

Found the Black Army.png

Hungarian Black Army.png

Among the several options we had available to portray the infamous Black Army, we decided upon making them a regular Infantry unit. We thought about making it a unique mercenary company, but since they were usually directly on the payroll of the Hungarian kings, we thought that it would work better as a recruitable unique unit.

A couple of war-oriented advances for the Age of Reformation:
Bulwark of Christianity.png

Hungarian Hussars.png

Hungarian Hussars2.png

There’s a generic Hussar cavalry unit, that is available in the Age of Absolutism. This means that Hungary gets its unique Hussar cavalry unit one age earlier. They aren’t the only country with unique Hussar units, but we will show those in future Tinto Flavour…

Also in the Age of Reformation, you will get these advances depending on which religion you follow; the first is for a Catholic Hungary, and the other two for a Protestant Hungary:
Catholic Shield.png

Hungarian Reformation.png

Realm of Many Religions.png

We will explain what ‘Religious Influence’ and ‘Church Power Actions’ are in the Tinto Talks devoted to Catholicism and Protestantism, respectively. For the moment, we let you decide which religion is the True Faith, and which are Heretical and Heathen to you.

Let’s now move to the narrative content for Hungary, which is really interesting in the first years of a game, since lots of historical events happened in real life...

Soon after the start of the game, you’ll get this event, showing the power of King Károly:
Absolute Rule.png

Absolute Rule2.png

Absolute Rule3.png

Absolute Rule4.png

An additional Cabinet Seat during the king’s life is a really strong bonus!

This event may also trigger on a dynamic date:
Congress of Visegrad.jpg

Congress of Visegrad2.png

Union of Crown.png

This eventually may lead to a follow-up event, which also unlocks a unique diplomatic relation:
Congress of Visegrad3.png

Union of Crowns Pact.png

It doesn’t necessarily mean that both may unite, if both have an heir, as historically happened. For instance, this is from the gameplay I was doing to take the screenshots:
Regency.png

During the reign of King Lajos, a few more interesting events happened:
Gold of Hungary.png

Gold of Hungary2.png

Gold of Hungary3.png

Gold of Hungary4.png

A very interesting event… I reported no less than 4 issues to fix when it got triggered!

Order of Saint George.png

Order of Saint George2.png

An interesting character to recruit…:
Toldi Miklos.png

Oh, and you may also be a secondary character in a Neapolitan plot…:
Neapolitan Prince.png

…And much more, but that’s all for today! Next week, on Monday we will have the Tinto Maps Feedback for Arabia, and on Friday we will take a look at the Kingdom of Scotland! @SaintDaveUK and @Roger Corominas will reply instead of me for the later, as I have to take a flight that afternoon. Cheers!

We'd like to have more clothing style per ages, eventually, but we're currently aiming to have base clothing sets for all the graphical cultures first.
Hrmm. I can understand the idea, but I worry it will be immersion breaking if its not resolved by release. The decision to have an increased emphasis on characters, relatively speaking(still nowhere near close to something like CK3 of course), and prominently featuring them in events and having their models be large and up front, will draw attention to them damaging immersion in later periods IMO.

The American Revolution being lead by Lord Commander Washington bedecked in full plate armor might be a tad much.

While i do agree, it would be pretty cool to see.

There's an event to re-enact it, which I didn't end up showing it in the TF since the two event options and the Bull itself may need some balancing, and we already had enough events in this TF.
Maybe I'm weird, but I actually like to struggle when I play Hungary in paradox games, so I love that this is such a nerf to royal power. Though the Golden bull wasn't just a noble thing, it also included rights relating to the church and foreigners. One thing I would like to be implemented (So that the Golden bull isn't just the worst privelege in existence) is that although the nobles weren't required to help the king if he went on the offensive (one of the reasons for the black army), but they were required to help out if the kingdom was attacked. So I'm not sure exactly how manpower works, but somehow there could be decreased manpower if Hungary it's attacking another country, but a boost if it's defending?

Is there an event or mechanism that, when the Kingdom of Hungary exceeds a certain limit of decentralization, it becomes an international organization, as was the case in our timeline, when the Kingdom included the possessions of the Principality of Cilli, the Kingdom of Serbia, the Kingdom of Poland, Duchy of Austria, and other autonomous counties/bans?

It may happen, and it may be a bit immersion-breaking. But it's also true that Hungarian kings historically their kingdom a bastion of Christendom against eastern threats, so in that regard, we think that it keeps making sense, flavour-wise.
Are dynamic descriptions for ideas something possible with the engine? So that you can create a condition that if the turkish are not a big threat, the description will be a more generic one.

Would this not just be represented by these other countries being under personal union with Hungary? Or as vassals if they did not share a King.

Can we have some information about Croatia?
What is its income, is the Ban at the head of state, and does Croatia have additional content (flavour)?

Croatia in 1337 has more territory in the north than depicted in the game.

Great flavour! Hope the weird Anjou naming problem gets resolved.

1. Have you read the feedback on location, province and terrain changes as per the feedback thread? I still see some erroneous province shapes and terrain

2. Do you have content for the special status of Székelys and Cumans as a soldier-people, with zero to no tax obligations but who in exchange provide a lot of levies?

3. Do you have the Tripartitum? And any unique government reform, like "Apostolic Kingdom"?

4. Do you have any disasters?

It's a releasable country - I just did it and took this in-game screenshot:
View attachment 1262376
5. Does a Transylvania releasable always contain Banat and Partium territories, or does it by default only have the Area of Transylvania?
Is it a voivodeship or a principality by default, and if it is a voivodeship, can it upgrade to a Principality? Does it have some flavour like the Edict of Torda or Transylvanian Unitarian church? And what flag does it have?

6. Can you establish Banates on the Balkans (as perhaps a special vassal type or as a flavour name for Marches)?

7. Will you make a model for the Holy Crown?

8. Do you have the Hajdús as any sort of content? Like a unique regiment type, mercenaries, or events (also one for settling them, that renames Szoboszló to Hajdúszoboszló, and Nagyböszörmény to Hajdúböszörmény)?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a link to the full map? Of is it just limited to Hungary

Just a comment on the fashion, it is very weird to see characters in the early 1300s wearing ruffs, a garment that was not in use for another 200 years.

People in this beginning years of the game should be wearing a houppelande, or something of the sort. The doublet is also a safe choice as it remains in style pretty much from the Middle Ages through the 1600s (though with a jerkin in later periods)

If there is one thing the CK art team get right it's the cosmetics and I am hopeful that Dave and his team will be able to do something great as well for EU5 character art.

Feels like a fools errand but here I am again to put my two cents in on the ui

  • is "implemented on" when it was at 100% or when it started?
    • If it is the former, do you need to indicate it is at 100%?
    • Is it possible to see one that is not at 100% or 0%?
  • I think it is odd that something that is removing land (no perpetual land grants) from the nobles make them happy and more powerful
  • I think that "progress towards" as towards in 'in the direction of' while to indicates a destination.
  • maybe it is just me but the sub icon for 'progress toward' makes me feel that the arrow is moving away from the icon and not 'to' the dot.
Monetary%20Fiefs.png

  • really liking this it has a real painting feel with the rough edges, the slight curling at the left and right edges, the whitening at the bottom. All held together with a elegant frame.
1741362993423.png

  • As there is an icon in the title block to indicate in what age the advance is available you do not need a line to also indicate the same information. (all advances)
  • Reverse the location of 'Allows' and "Hungarian Black Army Regular Regiment" to follow the same style as 'Allows' is the effect just like "+20.00%" in the Composite Light Cavalry. (All unlocks/allows)
Found%20the%20Black%20Army.png

  • Two icons for manpower, please unify (I prefer the left)
1741363952390.png
1741363967581.png

  • If the color coding of the unit statistics is comparing this unit type to a base (Cavalry?) unit of the age of reformation (when it is available) then keep them. If not than it appears nonsensical, is 0.40 for 'Food Storage' green just because it is a capacity?
  • Are we married to lists for the two requirements sections? Could they use the trade good tiles used in building type tooltips for production methods?
  • Personally I feel "Requirements for X" should be "X Costs"
  • If either of these requirement sections are per capita can it be changed to per unit so I don't have to do the math every time. I would also accepts both values if you are married to showing the per capita.
  • Which unit stats are affected by 'Combat Performance'? can these be indicated in some way in the statistics
  • Which unit stats are affected by 'Terrain Impact'?
Hungarian%20Hussars2.png

  • I think the True faith, Heretical and Heathen icons need another pass
  • maybe a secondary modifier in the upper left?
1741365280187.png

1741365307837.png

  • remove the for Forever, only use the 'for X' if there is an expiration time. I don't think you need a qualifier but If you feel you do maybe something like 'until he dies', 'while he rules', etc.
  • Why are Event Options not displayed as the normal lists?
  • For sake of efficiency of actions please for all that is holy please list out named modifiers locally and do not require an extra lock and hover.
    • <King> gains <named modifier>
      • <Cabinet Seats> <+1>
      • <Admin Eff> <+10.00%>
    • <Nobility> loses ...
Absolute%20Rule2.png

Absolute%20Rule3.png

  • As the background image is created in a fashion to make it appear as a painting this gives even more 'dude on a zoom call with a fake background' feel to this use of the 3d model. I would go so far as he is using a filter to give himself a crown and fancy clothes.
Absolute%20Rule.png

  • Thank for listing the possible effects of the event the is triggered
  • As this is a change in succession law, shouldn't it read 'Should either ruler die without proper heir...' as it doesn't matter if is it is Kaz or Karoly, right?
Congress%20of%20Visegrad2.png

Time for a break, maybe I will be back for the rest.

Hope this isn't just me pushing a boulder up a hill.

I don't know if this is being disvussed already or if someone mentioned it but privileges like invite german settlers should tell you what they actually do, in this case being that you get events for it

It's a minor mistake, but this is anachronistic.

The name Translylvania back then did not mean the entirity of territories ceded to Romania at the end of WW1, only the innermost part of it.

Bánság = Banat
Partium = Partium (In hungarian sometimes Részek)
Erdély = Transylvania

1741368450544.png

As I understand the releasable tag got those territories because it had cores on them, right? They should be removed.
