Tinto Talks #13 - 22nd of May 2024

Welcome to another Tinto Talks, where we give out top-secret information about our upcoming unannounced game with the code name Project Caesar. This time we will touch a little bit on the aspect of religion in this game.

Every country, pop, or character has a religion they adhere to. This impacts their relationship with the place they currently are, and their relationship with others in the world.

This is the religious setup of Aragon in 1337.

Every religion in Project Caesar belongs to a Religion Group, such as Christianity or Paganism. Fellow religions in the same group consider each other to be merely Heretic, whereas religions in different groups condemn each other as Heathen.

Every religion has a specific view of other religions as well, that ranges from Kindred to Enemy, which impacts relations between countries of different faiths, and how populations of another faith view your country.

Each country also has their own tolerance of their true faith, of heretics, and of heathens, which impacts how happy or angry the population will be depending on which country they belong to.

The Same Religion here, is from the law relating to valid heirs.

The religious unity of your country has a really large impact on the satisfaction of your Clergy Estate.

Important to know is that in Project Caesar, you just do not send missionaries to your locations and eventually they have changed religion. Here conversion is a slower process, which relies on government activities and infrastructure.

A unique building for Muslim countries that has a tiny impact on conversion.

Each religion belongs to a group, which impacts which tolerance is applied and how religions interact with each other. Religions in the same group are viewed as heretics, but those of another group as heathens.

The groups we currently have are, but that may change as we continue to develop the game.
  • Christian
  • Muslim
  • Eastern
  • Dharmic
  • Zoroastrian
  • Manichean
  • Judean
  • Andean
  • Pagan

The current Christian religions. Take into account that they are very much WIP!

In some games we have made there have not been any major differences between religions, merely being different modifiers, and while some religions in Project Caesar are still only a few modifiers, many will have mechanics. Right now, we have made unique mechanics for Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Miaphysitism, the various Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists, Shinto, Nahuatl, Hinduism & the Inti religion. Each of these will get their own unique later development diary.

Now every religion will still have some modifiers that describe them, in many cases it is things that enable or disable certain mechanics. Some examples include the fact that countries with Jain as their state religion can not start wars without a casus belli, and that Calvinist countries will never reroll the dice in a battle, as everything is preordained.

Stay tuned for next week, where we talk about another completely new feature that adds flavor to the game.

Sadly, I can’t reply today, as I am at some management thingie in Stockholm, but @Pavía will help you out!

Are some religions more potent to being converted? Like animist and other unorganized religions usually got replaced by more organized ones (i have no idea what i am talking about and may be making shit up)

After seeing how detailed religious divisions in CK3 are I am bit disappointed that "Animist" is one giant world-spanning religion that is present on most continents. Hinduism being one single religion and Islam being the simple three isms is a bit more palatable but still wondering the justification for these decisions too. Given that "Sami Shamanism" is its own religion (no offense to it specifically) I don't see why animism and Hinduism aren't broken up.

I asked this on the post about trade but didn't get an answer, so sorry if it is only somewhat related. But it was mentioned that muslim nations would not trade in alchohol, but how will it be for christians under muslim rule, like the various balkan peoples that were ruled by the Ottoman empire? Will those provinces be allowed to produce, consume and trade alchohol? Will it be influenced by religious tolerance?

Also, what is "kindred"? Can heathen religions be kindred, can Judaism be kindred to Christianity and vice versa? Or is it only for the same religious group?

I have a question about religion. In 1596 in the city of Brasta the union between Orthodox and Catholic churches was declared, so came the unites church. Also, during the Middle and New ages the idea of unity between churches was very somewhat popular. Nowadays there is still some people who practice that form of rites, especially in Western Ukraine. So, will this feature be implimented or shown in one way or another?

Unrelated, however. I have noticed near the the Baltic sea, Romuva, is still in Prussia and Curonia. So, Oldprussians are still represented as seperate, baltic-tongue speaking group?

P.S. I can provide sources

It seems slightly strange to me to have very small and specific faiths such as Sámi shamanism and then have a blanket "animist" faith that cover most of the southern hemisphere. I of course know that everything we see is WIP so maybe it's a placeholder before a more granular depicition is implemented?

That being said, I really like that religions have different relationships with eachother!

If you guys plan on including the Samaritans (which you might since the pop system allows for better representation of minorities), then the "Jewish/Judaean" religious group should be renamed to "Israelitic Faith/Israelitic" since that term includes both Jews and Samaritans. Samaritans are a sister-nation to Jews, not a subset of Jews.

Also, I assume the Protestant Reformation will be covered in later dev diaries. But I have to ask: will Anabaptists be included as a religion? They're the fourth major branch of Protestantism, alongside Lutheranism (good that you guys renamed it from "Protestantism", since some Lutherans reject that term), Reformism (prefered term over "Calvinism" iirc, unless you wanna add Presbyterianism later), and Anglicanism (which honestly might be the only one requiring a split, but let's not get ahead of ourselves). I don't think they were the majority anywhere besides some Mennonite settlements in the Americas and the PLC and Russian Empire, but again, the pop system allows for more granularity.
They even briefly took over the city of Münster and tried to found "New Jerusalem", look it up, it's crazy.

Finally, "Romuvan" is anachronistic, iirc it only refers to modern Lithuanian neopaganism, not historical Baltic paganism, so I think "Baltic Paganism/Baltic" is a much more accurate name (you guys already included "Sámi Shamanism" so maybe that's not an issue though).

This feels extremely gamy. We don't know how battles will work but try to explain this mechanic in something observed in history. In historical battles. It feels EU4 in its detatched gamyness. I'd move focus on the austere work ethic that the religion inspired, or anything actually grounded.

If in my country my primare religion is catholic and I kill or expel muslims. Do I get a bad reputation to other muslim countries and if I treat them well vice-versa?

I hope there's some distinction within animism cuz it varied widely. Yoruba animism is radically different from Hausa or dogon animism. I really hope paradox doesn't make Africa feel monolithic in this game like eu4 does
