Tinto Talks #43 - 25th of December 2025

Hello everyone and Merry Christmas to you all! Today we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, and thus here is a special gift for you all.

So for today we’ll be talking a little bit about how it is when you start playing in Project Caesar, and we’ll start as Norway..

We start in a union with Sweden, as we have the same king, who is only 20 years old at the start of the game. He is married though to Blanche of Namur, who in history gave birth to Håkon who became the King of Norway. The current heir is Eufemia, the king's younger sister, who is married to Albrech of Mecklenburg.

Norway is a rather big country, but most is sparsely populated and not much developed. There are a few main concentrations of population. Around the Oslo Fjord in the south, around Tröndelag in the north, and on the western coast around Bergen & Stavanger.

These are the 6 towns of Norway, and these populations include the entire countryside of the location, including all peasants. Oslo has about 900 burghers at the start of the game. This creates a bit of a challenge, as we do not have either a concentrated population nor a big population.

These population numbers are of course going to change dramatically in a few decades, as the Black Death is not exactly avoidable.

There are a few other challenges to consider as well. We do not have our own market and trade through the Lübeck market.

This has some benefits and some challenges. First of all, it's a market which has a lot of Hanseatic Merchants and access to goods will be plenty. The heartland around our capital in the south also has great market access. However, the rest of the country is not as lucky.

So what shall we do at the start though?

First of all, as Norway has a small population, I can’t rely on large scale raw material production, but should perhaps aim for a more capital economy. One way to achieve that is to grant a privilege to the Burghers. It will make them more powerful, but I think it's worth it.

Another way is to check the alerts and we see that our population has some needs that are not fulfilled. While we may not care all that much if the pops in Orkney get what they need from the Dublin Market, we can at least look into addressing the needs in Lübeck.

A lack of wine, beer and silver. The amount of wine needed is nothing I care about now, but it is clear that we could benefit from addressing the other needs.

First of all, we have a Silver Mine in Kongsberg, which we can expand.

We currently have a level 1 mine here, and due to the development of the area we can get up to a level 6 mine, employing up to 6,000 peasants in total. There is a demand far higher than supply in the market, but fully upgraded we should be able to supply it fully. It will be an important part of our economy, and we are already able to collect 5% of our taxes only from this location.


I start expanding the mines, with 1 level for now, and look into doing more diversification for my economy. The beer demand will easily solve itself over the next few months, as either the burghers will import more, or The Hansa or someone else will import to fulfill demands or some AI minor will build more breweries.

I want to get a higher trade capacity. I could build market or fishing villages in the countryside, but for now I think a Wharf in every coastal town would be the best benefit, as they impact the proximity calculations and give some sailors as well.

Wharfs are not the most expensive to build for us, especially with the access to lumber and masonry in the market.

There are other things to consider at the start of the game as well. Assigning the cabinet to their duties is one. As we start with 70 legitimacy, I assign a noble to increase the legitimacy of the King.

Probably only Norwegians or some very knowledgeable people about scandinavian medieval history who find it absolutely hilarious for this guy to do this

The goal now is to slowly build up an economy based around my towns and survive the Black Death as best as possible.

The goal during the next few decades would be to build up a simple gravel road from Oslo past Hamar over Tynset to Nidaros.

This is just a quick small overview of the start of the game in one country…

Next year we'll be back with another "bonus style" Tinto Talks, where we'll look into every trade goods.

@Johan speaking of Magnus IV and Hakon, is there flavor to depict the splitting of the union between Hakon who became king of Norway and his brother Erik who would've become Sweden's instead of the union continuing?

we are working on that.

In case of percentages rounding to the whole number would be enough in almost all cases.
Those prices +0.71, +2.28 are perfectly fine, though.

I do like always showing the same amount of decimals though.

One small thing though, can Euphemia be localised as Duchess consort Euphemia of Mecklenburg, or Princess Euphemia of Sweden? It isn't entirely clear who she is from this (though I appreciate that this may break the UI!)

Fair enough, though I'd still drop decimals from modifying percentages. Those are irrelevant when looking at a glance. Things like population growth that reasonably can be in a +/-1% range of course should show at least one decimal. Or always round percentages to 1 decimal, I doubt that there are many places where the additional accuracy is more than noise.

The percent-sign can take up the free space.

Would you consider using "ætta" instead of "ætten" -> "Jan av Sudrheimætta".
The feminine suffix(ending) ætta-a is pretty much standard in modern Norwegian(both Bokmål and Nynorsk).
Using ætt-en looks a bit archaic and "Rigsmål-ish" nowadays.

hmm.. think the title is Consort in that logic there though.
My point is that just "Consort" makes it sound as if she is the consort of Magnus IV, which she isn't. She is a princess of Sweden and Norway and, by marriage, the Duchess of Mecklenburg. I understand not simply wanting to call her "Duchess Euphamia of Mecklenburg", because of confusion between substantive titles and courtesy titles of spouses, which is why I suggested "Duchess Consort Euphamia of Mecklenburg" as an option.

For similar reasons, "Princess Euphamia of Sweden" works well because it tells me she is of my royal line (though doesn't give me information about a potential personal union, so is slightly less useful). This might be harder for non-kingdoms, though "Lord/Lady x of Luxembourg" would work well if we went down this line. Out of interest, how would her name be localised if her husband weren't the Duke of Mecklenburg yet, but the son of the current duke?

Does building that road make sense? It seems like using a sea route to connect these two locations would be faster than constructing a gravel road over hills and mountains.

sea routes already exists, and can only be marginally upgraded with some ports buildings, or better advances.

Great TT.

Only one question, as a country with lot of forrests, would expanding/building lumber mills get us some economic boost in early game, and easier/cheaper access to lumber building material?

yes, as the economy is traditional so better rgo output.

however, scandinavia is swimming in lumber, so prices are low on the lumber...

Will a new market get created separated from Lübeck or will Lübeck market changed name into Oslo or something if Norway managed to have a strong trade power? What will happen to other countries in the Lübeck market? Will they get angry and envious at Norway's market and want to fight or embargo Norway?


Please tell us the story of this guy

You'd have to make your own market in Oslo

What's the silver used for, actually? Minting and jewelry and such? And if minting, does it mean that it costs money to make money?

Silver is used by minting, and creating jewelry.

No, it wont cost money to make money.

Question: you mention building wharves wherever possible. One of my least favourite things in EU4 is that moment you gotta spam courthouses/factories. This has even more locations. Has anything been done to make this less of a painful task? Perhaps some sort of ‘build in top 10 locations’ button?

well, you only have 6 towns as Norway, and 1 of them is inland, so well..

there are automation systems for buildings though if you don't want to care.

Can you connect each location by roads or roads work like monuments in eu4?

Can we be careful as to where rounding occurs.

looking at the towns or cities popup and adding up all these values I am getting 472,582 pops, but in the overview there are 471k. The only way I can resolve this is rounding locations first (and having the 23,500 round to 23k, typically this would round up or round even to 24k). I think that rounding to early in the process (round all location and then add it up) can cause an end value that is off by a decent margin (worst case is ~1/2 number of locations).

Also can we get rid of the underline to indicate that there is a popup, with nearly everything underlined it just becomes visual clutter.

If You want to prepere for black death You should not be investing in towns as they will be hit the hardest.
 
Norway should really have an Iron source in the south.

The mineral formation "Arendalsfeltet" supplied Norwegian Iron works with around 2/3 of the total iron used between 1600s and 1860. Operations started before the Kongsberg silver mines.

Over 1.3 million tonnes of extremely high quality iron from up to 400 mines. Mørefjær mine reached as far as 180 meters down.

The area surrounding Arendalsfeltet also has very good conditions for forestry used in mining and iron work Industry (like for Næs jernverk). Agder today produce more Lumber than Trøndelag even! Forestry for export of Lumber was also extremely important to the region. Much of it went to UK and Netherlands. The farmers in Agder were very independent and made good money selling Lumber due to ease of access. (Later Arendal was sometimes called the "Venice of the north", with highest trade tonnage in Norway. It would be more important than Stavanger if not for Arendalakrasjet)

The area around Arendal producing wool makes no sense. Cattle and pigs were the animals raised. There is a reason we eat "Ribbe" instead of "Pinnekjøtt" down south!

So please take another look at the south coast! ☺️
