Rome, Byzantium, Aztec, Ottoman, Ming, Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, Teutonic Order, Seleucid, Seljuk Turks, Golden Horde Abbasid, CSA, Prussia, German Reich, Imperial Japan, Soviet Union/Imperial Russia and of course the Holy Roman Empire with Karlings or Habsburgs as emperor. Everyone wants their favorite nation to be in the game.

If we assume that Stellaris takes place in the same in-game universe that Paradox has created from CK2->EU4->HOI4->Stellaris then humanity will most likely be ruled by either the Giant Green Blob, aka the Abbasids, OR the Karlings who, because of the ability to breed like rabbits, have taken over the entire Human race and made everyone a Karling.

Terran Empire/Confederation/Union/Directoriate/People's Republic/whatever would be nice, because it's neutral, but sounds better than Earth xxx because it is in Latin. Everything sounds better in Latin. Or we can call it British Empire. Britannia rule the space!

Glorious space Britain, under our immortal God queen! Anything else would simply be improper.

Or maybe the 'Sol Sovereignty'

In any kind of space game, where possible, I always mod in the Sol system with a properly placed Earth, Moon, asteroid belt, etc.

I'm pretty sure though that Paradox will allow for this, at least through modding the game files.

As for the idea of several "races/cultures/nations" existing on one planet, that would be awesomness with awesome sauce on top... I don't believe any other space game has successfully managed to pull off a feature like that :)

In my opinion a unified Earth should simply be called "Humankind". Non-political term that would be easier to explain to sentient species discovered in space.

The Imperium of Man. The only real choice.

Nonsense. The united Nations have fallen decades ago. But from their ashes the glorious Terran Democratic Empire emerged

Never put "democratic" on a country name. Republic is good, democratic means extremely not democratic. And the gods help you if you live in a democratic republic. Doubly so with prefix "People's".

I resent the suggestion that the Glorious People's Democratic Socialist Republican Empire of Earth is in any way a non-democratic oppressive regime!

Mass Effect actually had one of the more realistic representations of a future humanity. All of the nations today still existed, but when we started colonizing space the major nations formed the Systems Alliance. Each nation paid into the systems alliance so it could build ships and handle administration of off-world colonies. How much influence a nation had in the Systems Alliance was determined by how much money and resources they put into it. So, naturally (as indicated by the codex), the United States, Russia/China and the EU were the real influence behind the SA. At first, the SA had no real governing body whatsoever except for colonial administration.

When the First Contact war happened, the individual nations had trouble organizing their personal forces for defense and it was the Systems Alliance military that ended up winning the major battles. After that, the Systems Alliance became more of a global European Union, gaining more authority, a legislative body, and the ability to dictate laws that must be followed in the colonies. Obviously, the makeup of the legislative body and SA leadership was still effected largely by the nations who contributed the most (US, EU, etc).

There is one of two possibilities i see realistically for humanity in the future. Forming something similar to the Systems Alliance, or each major nation colonizing space on its own with loosely followed treaties and a shaky alliance preventing an interstellar war between human factions.

Sword of the Stars has a similar story about Sol Force. I agree this would be the most 'logical' way of unifying earth. an external threat + a new governing body not marred by the history of existing bodies.
