The horror, the horror

Not gonna lie, these look pretty decent, even good, compared to the absolute inbred potatoes that random generator creates for rest of the game.

They all suffer from horrible view angles and bad clothing with poor lighting and textures though. CK3 portraits are far, far superior.

Most of them just looks the same but with different hair or beard

I'd honestly prefer no portraits whatsoever, just a randomly generated colored icon, like a cyan ruler icon to represent ruler x and a red ruler icon to represent ruler y.

The CK3 character generation system is awesome. The fact it is tied to the characters genetics makes it such an enjoyable part of the core gameplay. And it is so much better than the original 2D option.

The Vicky3 portraits are perfectly fine. People just love to complain about things. I'm just eternally grateful that Paradox does generated portraits so much better than the football manager games do.

I don't think it's realistic at all for Paradox to make either 2D or 3D models for a game spanning 500 years of fashion. I think what's most likely is that we won't get portraits at all.

I honestly don't think it's that unrealistic, Vic3 doesn't have clothing models for characters in the late game and they still kept the 3d portraits. In my opinion, it would be strange if there weren't portraits in Project Ceasar just for that specific reason.

I have no issue with 3D or 2D portraits, but the question is ultimately going to be if it's worth the development time
It would be simple to have a randomly-generated 2D headshot portrait, but would that fit the UI? It could end up looking a bit silly

depends on what style of 2d they would want, like the one from CK2? The 2D/3D mixture of Imperator? The 2D images of HOI 4? The 2D moving ones of Stellaris? There is a pletora of styles of CK2 modding community too, like CPR+ that try facial structures a little more detailed, Better Looking Garbs that try a more diverse set of cloths, Portrait Overhaul for AGOT that isa actualy really beaultiful, a lot of details in every aspect, Warhammer uses a more fantasy oriented portraits for humans too.

What if they just had no portraits, but had an option to either enable 3d portraits (disabled by default) or upload custom 2d portraits? I think that is a good compromise, and considering the fact that project Caesar is still in early development, these features can be added down the line.

So spend the significant amount of time it takes to create 3D portraits, but then have them disabled by default? This seems like the worse possible compromise.

Selling regional clothing for 3d portraits is a lucrative cash injection for the game’s development. Not to mention that there are a lot of cultures in the game and on top of that different centuries worth of fashion.

English Fashion Pack - $9.99:
- English Plantagenet Fashion
- English Tudor Fashion
- English Restoration Fashion
- British Georgian Fashion
- British Regency Fashion

Now the same for France, Spain/Portugal, Italy, Scandinavia, Russia, Ottomans, India, Persia, Hordes, China, Japan, Korea, SEA, Arab, Maghreb, West African, East African, Native American, Aztec/Maya, Andean, Pacific, etc. Prices may change based on the region as some are more popular or played than others.

That’s at least $200 over the years for people who like to collect packs to get the “full experience”. There will be at least a couple of thousand players like that if the game hits the ground running especially as this game will reach new heights for the GSG genre. In 5-6 years time the game can make a few million dollars in graphic packs.

sadly yes, but they can do the same with 2d portraits, dont need to be just head portraits, Gilded Destiny has the whole body of 2d moving portraits

With CK3 and Vic3 PDX took a path that I visually don’t like. All the big buttons and animations feel… weird. It’s okay to have a modern UI, but just not like that.

But Johan probably thinks it's cool. I forget what he said in his original comment, but that's probably what he meant.

I completely agree with the idea that the 3D models that PDS now employs have obvious shortcomings in a relative sense. Please note that I am not suggesting that 3D should be discarded altogether and regress to the 2D era. Backwards is an undesirable behaviour, but progress is endless.

The question is: would PDX be willing to distribute some more resources to this to make the 3D portraits even better? I suspect this has to be up to Stockholm, not Tinto.

Character of The SIMS 4 maybe better……

In fact, I think the aim of Paradox game "Life by you" is testing for the characters in future games

I'm not sure, but it seems that Life by you is not a PDS game (developed by Paradox)- just published by Paradox.

Sims4's characters focus on cuteness, but the detail is a bit less than PDS. the two have different goals.
