I don't know if anyone has proposed this, but my wild speculation is - a Dune grand strategy game!
  • Imagine applying the CK2 dynasty mechanics to the Dune universe
  • Terrain matters - what matters more in the Dune universe than the terrain of Arrakis?
  • The Landsraad voted on various measures
  • Anyone know if seven and three have any significance in the Dune universe? Number of houses, or factions, or something?

They called it Project Augustus. It's too obvious that it'd be a new Rome game. WAY too obvious for it to be a mind game from Paradox.

'73 is actually a reference to the oil crisis.
Pigs is actually the bay of pigs, as aforementioned by other commenters.
It's a new IP. Paradox already has a Rome series in Europa Universalis. However, East VS West was cancelled. They have always dreamed about making this new game, which tells me they may have tried before, but couldn't because of financial and tech restrictions. But after the company became a money printer with each release, I am certain they can tackle this now.
Terrain is important. (I have no idea of what does this mean)
Technological Development and Elections will be part of the game. It could easily be a new Rome, but also a modern democracy game.
Hearts of Iron and Crusader Kings developer is leading the project. Could be anything. If it was, however, a new Universalis for Rome, wouldn't it be better for an Universalis guy to direct it?

My hypothesis is that Paradox is toying with us. It's not a new classic age game, but a modernity one.

"We've a three-point civilization: the Imperial Household balanced against the Federated Great Houses of the Landsraad, and between them, the Guild with its damnable monopoly on interstellar transport.

Reverend Mother Mohiam, Dune"

@Cauldyth I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possiblity that it's based on a novel, or, at least, takes heavy inspiration from one. I mean, in order to have the amount of depth expected from a Paradox GSG it darn well better take inspiration from several novels! No generic sci-fi bullcrap like that Civilization Beyond Earth.

Possibly. The only problem with that is they said it's not a Cold War era game. That means it has to take place after 1991, which means it has to model a future that hasn't happened yet. That's easily done when you're making a game that's 500 or 1,000 years in the future. Not so much for a game set in the 21st century. Especially one with as much depth as a Paradox GSG.

Could you tell me where they said it'd not be a Cold War game? I'd really like to know, because it'd break half my thesis. I honestly doubt they'd make it so obvious that is a new classical age game for the reasons mentioned in my first post.

The issue with being a future-themed game is that terrain has to matter. While terrain does matter in space, mainly because of gravitational pull and the different radiations emited by the many stars, it does such in a very different faction compared to Hearts of Iron, per example. Can we even call it terrain when it all looks the same, but feels different?

"The terrain actually matters in the game."

I don't understand that 'actually', hasn't the guy who wrote it ever tried to invade the UK or the USSR in Hearts of Iron? Weather and terrain are key factors in it.

True. For EvW we worked on design, interface & art to help out BL-Logic. It is NOT a cold-war game, as East vs West was supposed to be our cold-war game.

Thanks.

Damn it! It's going to be another Rome game. I'm not mentioning publishers, but the last Rome game that I bought gave me a lot of hype and scarred me to death and turned me into a battered wife who keeps coming back for more with each cheap DLC. Yes, it was a strategy one.

Why won't you give us something new, Paradox? Why? :'(

He actually said "truly." Whoever said "actually" misquoted him.

Thanks.

O_O. Most people here seem to be convinced it's a space game. Have you heard about the Stellaris trademark? At any rate if they do Rome(which I hope they will) I'm sure they'll bring something new the table regardless. Plus it's been 7 years since EU Rome's release.

This is just depressing for someone who wanted a Cold War~Future game. It'd be too obvious for it to be Rome 8, but a space game leaves me in doubt. I'm sure it'll be great, but it's just not what I desire from a new IP.

A Cold War-Future game hasn't been ruled out yet. Just the regular Cold War.
