Three cheers, and bugs

Hurrah!

Finally we've released this. First of all, kudos to everyone on the team.

Special mentions to Stephen, who did a great job on the Russian events and putting together the mod, Johan, our team leader who did a lot of the techs, Shadowknight, who did the US events and sorted out the tech tree, Steele, who fixed other bits of the tech tree and did more US events, and last but not least, the ever reliable, hardworking fellow who arguably did the lion's share of the work - Allenby.

I propose using the thread for bugs, idiocy, and other madness that pops up.

This is only a beta - far far from what we consider to be a finished product. Take your complaints here, gentlemen.

Thank you kindly, Patch - a fine set of compliments! :)

Firstly, the problem of the powers declaring war on Sanusia can be solved by making Italy the aggressor in the scenario file - at that point, no one declares war on them.

There are plenty of errors that need to be sorted out - I haven't installed it yet, so I shall do so when I wake up tomorrow afternoon, and then give them a look.

What i have noticed so far is that conscription give 99% decrease in tech research time and cost This seems a bit much as now every day i have about 10-20 new techs. (Playing as Austro-Hungary)

Also, not many of the techs seem to have descriptors of their function with them. A few do (like basic machine gun) but NONE of the land docs or the gas have any description of benifits. Don't know if thats by design or not.

So far though, looks great. Looking forward to playing!

Patch(when did he get that particular nickname, Allenby?) you forgot to mention yourself on the list for information pertaining to China. The list of thanks and praise could go on endlessly from Kaiser Bill's (where are you?) leader lists, Gwalcmai's graphics, to 2Coats much appreciated help in getting the leader lists working.

I will also install it tomorrow, but I shall no doubt be getting up earlier than the afternoon (although with the 5 hour time difference in GMT Allenby might be getting up the same time as myself. :) ).

As an expansion on that, its april 1914 and i am already into at least researching lvl 3 gold tech in EVERY category. Also, playing as Hungary, I have not been able to select a leader to command my troops as of yet

I have several weird occurances, namely France giving away a lot of it territory to Germany, Belgium allying with Germany, and more weird events then I care to name.

Also, there appear to be no VPs? Leading to an easy annexation of almost any country (just take their capital with cavalry)

Invinceable German Army, no supplies or any resources for France/Britian (haven't checked the others..) at start, and thus leads to an easy defeat.

Now, these events are quite odd, I installed the game differently (screw vanilla HOI, I just copied over the files..) so maybe there a conflicting file or two, or something else I installed a while back but forgot about.

I'll do an uninstall tomorrow, and reinstall, I'll let you guys know what happens.

But nonetheless, these problems (either mine or the mods) aren't huge, for I got to see Pompey in action (true, he got his arse kicked... by Belgians too..) and so I'm supremely satisfied.

Good work Fellas. :D

Workarounds so far...

Excellent work everyone, I've been waiting for a WWI game for ages and ages... Anyways, here's the workarounds I've found so far for bugs.

Generals/Cabinet Ministers not appearing: As mentioned by someone else you need to make or copy the appropriate .csv file from the db/leaders or db/ministers directory. If you just do that however the game doesn't (for me at least) sort the leaders according to service, what I needed to do was rename each of the new .csv files for the leaders to the U** file (for countries with a different tag I used that tag), this lets you actually use the leaders.

Game not letting you save: you need to create a save games folder in the TGW directory in the scenarios folder.

Game not remembering personal settings: You need to copy the "scenario template.dat" file to the /TGW/scenarios folder.

Problems I still have:
1.) Game will not let me load in-game, it crashes to desktop but will load fine from a fresh start of the game.

2.) I cannot get Russias cabinet to appear despite the ministers file being present.

Also I may have missed some countries while renaming the .csvs or some may not work (I'm not going to try every country in the game after all)

Anyway, thats what I've found so far, now I'm off to start a game as A-H. Thanks again for a great mod.

1) Victory points - major major problem. Defeats the entire purpose of having defeat events scripted.

2) Tech research too fast - most take just a few days.

3) Gangbanging on Sanusia. Should only be Italy.

4) Attack values dont seem to have been lowered enough, and defence values not high enough.

5) Ministers and leaders problems appearing for the user defined nations.

6) Minor problem, but Manchuria doesnt seem to be there. CHC's claims to Nepal should be removed. For gameplay reason, same goes for Outer Mongolia and Tibet.

7) As soon as we fix the everyone rape Sanusia problem, Russia will leave the Entente. We'll need to script an event that checks if Russia and France are allied, if not then forge alliance.

8) British war entry starts at 100. Very very wrong, -100 closer to the mark I'd wager!

Well, thats the point of playtesting.

I'm worried, though, that the techs go so fast. The costs and times, for the trees I scripted were all greater than their HoI counterparts...

As Germany:

Belgium and France surrendered to me in Early 1914.

I didnt lose 1 battle, even when attacking numerically superior dug in Russians across a river. In fact, all battles lasted 1-3 hours tops.

I annexed France in like 1 week.

Techs cost like 1 IC and take a few days and serve no noticeable purpose save for a select few.

Damn good job though, once you guys iron out the bugs this will ownage beyond all that has owned before.

this will ownage beyond all that has owned before

I hereby proclaim this to be the quote of the day.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll be working on removing these bugs...

It crashs to windows . First when get country when its loading it it says that there cant find things .

Germany puppet states Belgium 3/4 of the time, then proceeds to annex France in about 5 days. Then annexes Russia. Then China. French cannot defend themselves. Brits do nothing. Russians lose ww2-style.always war against silusia or something. war doesn't happen 1/2 the time due to events.

Is the file present in <Hoi>\db\ministers? I don't know if that's required, but this is as good a time as any to find out.

Did you follow the instructions in the "Installation" thread? (I don't mean you did it wrong, more likely the instructions are wrong :)) Just trying to determine whether you installed using mod-dir or not. Those error messages seem to be showing up for mod-dir (?) maybe a conflict between TGW and stock HOI.

We might have to go looking for the help of one of those math guys who know the game's innards. There is a variable that tells the game how likely one defense point is to block an attack. Setting that to high values tends to make battles last longer.

1) Defeat events firing as soon as Jan 4 1914:
"France has been defeated".

2) When war start Germany annex France in few days, and does the same of Russia. (linked to 1 since Germany has military access through defeatede France)

3) AH does not prepare war with Serbia by putting troops on its borders.
I noticed only 2 AI files (France,Germany) so maybe it's just the problem.

4) When ending the scenario ("Surrender") the game seems to crash at the at screen that shows the final scores.

Did the installation on a Hoi with Core. Maybe a clean HoI necessary?

Edit: more info about the French defeat event.
doesn't happen when I play France, but always happen on Jan 4 when I do a handsoff or play another country.

Unfortunately, from what you're reporting, your install is working just as well as everyone else's. :(:)

Found the causes for all mismatches when starting the scenario. (the four I got before the A-H boom, that is)

In heavy aircraft tech, two techs with id 9805 (Parasite Aircraft Hangar and Advanced Airship Bomb) Changing the second one to 9806 should remove the first mismatch.

TGW\db\events\france.txt: Two events numbered 20416. Renumbering one to 20421 should fix it.

germany.txt + 1915war.txt: events numbered 21460 and 21461 in both these files. Do a find/replace of 21460 and 21461 in 1915war.txt. Replace with 21470 and 21471.

Conscription tech bonuses was just my way of testing the tech tree (it made it possible for me to check if everything was researchable without playing the full game), and it seems like it made it to the release... :) Just don't research it is the temporary fix. It does not at the moment affect anything, so...

Germany overrunning everything is due to another of my tests... I've added some techs and bonuses to German units, which make them super-duper compared to everyone elses. Temporary fix: open [...]/scenarios/1914/germany.inc and search for "upgrade". You will now see some lines where units are given "extra" attack and defence points. Remove those lines.
