I could do without the sarcasm in the description (and the Roman Empire before the western portion fell had the capitol in places besides Rome at several points), but it's nice that there's at least a way in-game to have a popular country not be called something completely anachronistic that was used as a slur to delegitimise them after they were gone. Even if Byzantine Empire does sound really cool if you ignore that it's wrong and was coined out of spite.

Slight sarcasm has always been our style

My spanish teacher always insists on "estadounidense" or so, for USA'ian
In Portugal "estadunidense" is correct but barely used. In Spain "estadounidense" is correct and is the norm (in most parts of the country) so your teacher is right.

Oh, I know that very well! Not mad at all, in the grand scheme of things it isn't that important. But given how many people learn history from these games, I appreciate that the only option isn't perpetuating a malicious myth.

I'm gonna be annoying and say that having "ERE" as the name is probably also not a good solution - it was never used as a term, even as an endonym, and "Byzantium" is literally more accurate in the sense of "what people know".

MY PROPOSAL IS: give us a game rule about endonyms and exonyms! I'm fine with it being called "Byzantium" as an exonym, and then "Basileia Rhomaion" or "Empire of the Romans" if we go with endonyms.

"Imperium Osmańskie" in polish

My issue with this proposal is that undoubtedly it will lead to endonyms only being used in certain regions, while others will continue to have exonyms due to a paucity of sources.

And then there is the problem of confusion. The Delhi Sultanate referred to herself as Hindustan, but so did the Mughals. Would they have the same name, then, under this framework? That is in my opinion needlessly confusing.

Personally I would say we use exonyms based on localization, and then allow the player to rename tags as we like. So you could play Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων if you like and I'll go ahead and run a quick பாண்டியப் பேரரசு. I'm being slightly hyperbolic, but still, this allows for tags to generally be recognized quickly, for those tag names to be consistent (to an extent) worldwide, while still allowing you to do what you like.

I don't fully disagree with your sentiment there. The reason I'm specifically against the ERE name is the same reason I dislike it in EU4 - it's neither an endonym, nor really an exonym, nor accurate and practical.

I don't mind going full detailed into [Latinized] endonyms. There may be a source issue, and there may be an issue because PDX seems to have specific mechanics around naming in PC/EU5 (the whole "Crown of Aragon" stuff) - so maybe it is best to leave this to HPM-style modders.

Do not want to be that guy but Johan algaib kinda means Johan from other(out) side(world). I would give him a Roman helm and write Restitutor Orbis there
Clearly accurate then, sent from the heavens to grace us with EU5 :p

I gotta ask - will Middle Eastern tags have dynamic names based on the ruler dynasty name? Or it is set as definite name for the tag? So like if Ottomans would lose an heir of Ottoman dynaasty and get, let's say Mustafid heir. Will the country name change to "Mustafids" once he will ascend to the throne?
good point

Fair enough. I am admittedly almost completely unaware of Byzantine/Roman history so I did not know that.

How about having a "folder" in game options called something like naming conventions or something like that?

Could allow for modders or even flavour packs to add extra toggleable naming alternatives without cluttering up the main options menu.

Im thinking something along the lines of how in hoi4 you have a separate "folder"/menu for which nations gets boosted/nerfed in their production etc, but for names.

People who dont want to mess with different names can simply chose to ignore it, while allowing others to add alternative names for the things they want, without forcing anyone to interact with it/clutter up the other options.

Should be easily done by having the nation id's as a number, with nation 0001 taking its name from naming option A etc, but since Johan made this post i guess they might already have a working system for how this kind of thing would work.
