when you get tired to scroll the Excel window everytime to read the header row, you begin to learn what the field means by the type of the number

Oh wow. Do you not know about the FREEZE command that will lock the header row at the top and you can scroll down the entire document with that in place as a column header?

I didn't know that. Probably one of the reasons why I used a text editor the few times I actually felt like going into a csv. Another one is Excel's tendency to place the saved file in "My Documents". I edit the file, go to try it out and the I remember I'm using the wrong file.

Anyway. The South and Central American counter palettes are here: http://gwalcmai.planetaclix.pt/america.zip . Sorry, some of the background colours are a bit strange. Most of them match the political map.

I really don't like the build unit icons in the game, so I thought I'd mess around with it to see what I could come up with. What do you guys think of this? Even if most of you don't like it for CORE, I'm sure I'll continue it for my own personal use.

I had started working on this a while ago. I was looking for good artwork of tanks and planes and so forth. I tried using modeling images or that really intense artwork that some guys do of famous battles or whatever. For armor I had a pick of a Tiger prowling through the Ardennes during Bulge. It was interesting, but to me there has to be consistency. You can't have a pic like that, then this photograph pic, then some goofy old icon. Consistency.

I still think the artwork scheme could work well. It would just be a real big search for artwork. :(

Ok, it's probably a question for wiki, but I'll ask it here since it'd be much quicker and the GFX thread there seems to be dead. How do I remove this darn thing? I followed all the steps to remove the counters and stuff, but the game then started looking for the palettes and stopped working. The strange thing is that I'm sure I deleted only the files in the CORE folder, not the vanilla files... I reproduced the problem with rc11 and the same situation happens. Could someone post a complete list of files related to C.O.R.E. counters so that I could delete them manually?

I'd appreciate that.
Cheers

Geez, I wish I could tell you all of them, but I cannot. AFAIK, though, you need all the counter_XXX.bmp files and the ETHPAL.bmp file in the Palette folder. Then you need the hoi_counter_strip.bmp and hoi_counter_size.bmp files in the somethingorrather folder. Something like that.

Other than that, I can't help.

Well, the readme tells that I need to delete or rename most of the aforementioned files -- which messes up the game. Is there a chance the GFX mod will be optional someday? I would really like to be able to play C.O.R.E. without it.
Cheers

The GFX will definitely be seperated from the main install before 1.0

AFAIK, you need the counter_TAG.bmp files in the <hoi>\gfx\palette dir. To remove the core counters, you remove the counter_TAG.bmp files from the <CORE>\gfx\palette directory. You should also remove the hoi_counter_strip.bmp and hoi_counter_size.bmp from <CORE>\gfx\map. All those files should remain in the base hoi structure. You shouldn't remove ethpal.bmp, as that is the palette for the ethiopian infantry sprite.

If you did that and the game didn't revert to using the HOI stock counters, I don't know what's the matter. What kind of error message are you getting, if any?

Oh, you want to get rid of the unit build icons! I thought you wanted to delete the counters and revert to the original HOI ones.

You have to delete units.bmp, units_small.bmp and auxiliary.bmp from CORE\gfx\interface. There's no need to touch the palette directory. Of course, if you're not playing using counters (the ones on the map) you really don't need the palette files anyway.

Did you try going into GFX\interface and copy a bit of (for ex) middle.bmp to get the "rusty metal" texture for the button background? (I'm sure there are better ways to get that, but that's what I did...) I think that (and maybe a hint of drop-shadow around the icon) would make those look even better.

Col. Kraken, about the 'shading', it's something to do with the palette. I've edited the 'harbor' gfx using the same palette than the original one and i got shading. I think that it needs to use the same color depth than the original ones and that the 2 first colours of the palette (used for transparent and shadow) are exactly the same than the original ones.

I'm using the counter set that put in this thread McNaughton and Gwalcmai and Looks Great!, but missed some countries like Comunist China, Swiss, Bulgaria, Baltic States ....
Any news that how far is it from being completed?

This is the thread for discussing graphics changes for C.O.R.E.

I'd like to get some input about separate install options, ie is the current split between typical and minimal good or do we need a larger number of install options for specific gfx components?
