Do we have any events for battles that took place? Aside from the Nomonhan incident? Which is really more about a possible state of war between USSR/Japan than anything else.

AFAIK, we script events around diplomatic happenings and these things set the stage for action/reaction for the nations. We leave the battles to the game engine itself.

I am not really comfortable seeing battles being scripted into the game. Because then you are scripting outside what I think we've been doing.

So no Pearl Harbor, no Bulge, no Kursk - none of that for me, thank you.

The only thing that gets close are the chinese and finnish captture equipment events.

Also Changfukeng is a battle handled via events, essentially because there was no real state of war. What Phil says is absolutely right, battles belong in the combat system.

Budgie,

Please, keep your comments and input coming. However, consider putting them in paragraph form. Like this, for example.

It is a bit off-putting to try to read out posts formatted like you have done in your past few posts. Just put your thoughts together. They are indeed just as valid as mine or anyone else's. Except Steel, of course! ;) LOL! I have to admit that I never fully read through your post about Pearl Harbor and never got to the technical questions because of this.

Consider it like standing very close to a person and talking to them while you have bad breath. You think they are really listening to what you are saying? Or are they thinking, "whew, I gotta hold my breath here for a sec..." :)

Maybe a event for sweden(and norway) if axis declare war on norway, like the winter war event.

There's 130 events for the Scandinavian countries, listed here

Guys : I removed my posts for these reasons.

1) Steel and the Far East thread crew have done a lot of work on the Asia events and coding. I had not read the thread there and now that I have ,some of my ideas are redundent. First the S.E.Asia team had to get the Japan -China war working as fairly historical before having Japan charge off all across the Pacific. The China/Japan war is now working fairly well and the team has switched over to the Japan southern campaign .

2) Some of my posts were getting too complex for this specific thread. My ideas were turning into a series of "what if" questions as I struggled to understand and overcome the negative feedback of the more experienced programmers constituting the majority of the group. So I have resolved to go back , do my homework and catch up to the team. I fully want to understand the what and how of the current design as well as the coding before rejoining discussion.

3) The discussion was distracting some of the CORE team from working on other projects of greater importance.

All of my ideas will be re-asked and discussed dis-passionately in the script writing help thread as I seek answers on why or why not a style of programming is acceptable for the CORE design.

Thanks for Listening.

Budgie.

The Blasted Maginot Line

I am thinking something needs to be done with the Maginot Line fort levels once Germany has the area surrounded. I have some events in mind, but I'll discuss things for a second.

Just watched France refuse the Vichy offer and fight to the end. So eventually all that was left was the three Maginot provinces with a heap o' Frenchies in them. They were holding the Germans off well into 1941 (and it had been an early war w/ a mid-1938 start); at least 8 months after the rest of France was under the Nazi boot. I cancelled out of that game at that point to deal with this issue - the French still holding out at the time.

So I believe the fort levels need to come down if the area is surrounded. I do not think taking them to zero is appropriate simply because they would afford some protection towards the east (Germany) in the event of a multi-angled German attack. How much is the question. I am thinking the provinces should be lowered to about a 2 or 3 fort level.

Also, not all of them at once. But according to the provinces that Germany occupies behind or to the flank of the Line itself. Those conditions would be the trigger for bringing the fort levels down.

The point could be made "what if France retakes those provinces?". Well, I just can't think that far into the future. :) I don't know - maybe someone can suggest something?

I just think it's ridiculous that they hold out for so long against mid-41 Germany. Whew.

I guess this is along the lines of the Sudetenland fortifications post someone made earlier.

Anyways, comments please. I am going to work up three events (one for each ML province) later and post in a file for analysis and playtest.

My attempt at Maginot situation

Well, I got sick of it. Wrote a few events in the France file.

Here ya go - it busts them down to level 3 forts province by province (3 ML provinces). Triggers for either German or Italian possession of flanking provinces and also a state of war between France and either Germany or Italy.

Maginot Line Reduction

I reloaded my saved game where the '41 Germans had them surrounded. Didn't take too long to make them cry 'uncle'.

EDIT: updated to include Vichy possession of flanking provinces

Vichy event

I think an event for the German occupation of Southern France on 11.11.1942 is missing to make the creation of Vichy more attractive for GER.

#########################################################################
# Southern France occupied by Germany
#########################################################################
event = {
id = XXXX
random = no
country = VIC
trigger = {
event = 2800 #Vichy is created by GER
puppet = { country = GER country = VIC }
}

name = "EVT_XXXX_NAME"
desc = "EVT_XXXX_DESC"
style = 0

date = { day = 11 month = november year = 1942 }

action_a = {
name = "ACTIONNAMEXXXXA" # Accept
command = { type = capital which = ??? }
command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 545 }
command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 915 }
command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 917 }
command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 923 }
command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 926 }
command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 927 }
command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 928 }

command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 935 }
command = { type = secedeprovince which = GER value = 937 }

command = { type = dissent value = 10 }
}
action_b = {
name = "ACTIONNAMEXXXXB" # Refuse
command = { type = trigger which = XXXX } #FRA event to inherit VIC
}
}

"EVT_XXXX_NAME" = German Occupation of Southern France
"EVT_XXXX_DESC" = With the threat of an Allied invasion from Northern Africa, Germany occupies the Vichy territory in Southern France and Corsica.
"ACTIONNAMEXXXXA" = We have to accept
"ACTIONNAMEXXXXB" = We can not tolerate this

-there has to be a FRA event to inherit VIC
-the new capital has to be set
-unfortunately, I am no expert on events

How do you like it?

RE: Vichy

This is being worked on. I think that OHGamer is primary on it. The German occupation of Vichy is going to be part of a chian of events, including Opertaion Torch, the negotiations with Darlan, and involve a reworking of Free France after the fall. I'm sure OHGamer will take a look at the event when he gets there.

yalta or the share of the world

Here is the point for commodity reason I annex some countries during my games and so do the AI.
This create a situation so that when the war is over europe is possessed by 2 to 4 countries and it is impossible to recreate countries previously annexed...
I think it may be useful to have some kind of end of war in europe asking the winners if they want recreate the countries and set them free keep them as part of the country or create a puppet regime...

I know that long ago there was some disscussion about having a series of events to replicate the Yalta conference, but I don't think that anything ever happened with that chain. I can't recall if it was due to the inability to code the events to make them work correctly or if the person doing it just ran out of time. If it is the later, feel free to come up with some ideas, and we canlook at them an determine whether it will have the correct effects or not. MDow

I know we discussed it, and Steel even posted to indicate that the Yalta thread is to be used for discussion of the conferences, but I'll be danged if I can remeber where we left off on it. IMO, I think we should have the conferences in there, including a few of the smaler ones, so we can include things like the Atlantic charter. But, that can all be discussed in teh proper thread. ;)
