Ilkhold is right. The Siegfried line was in place pre-war and is being underestimated by you all. The only reason it did little in the war itself was that the germans lost most of their remaining heavy equipment in the 1944 offensive (that included the bulge).

Zuckergußgebäck,

I just want to compliment you on your wording of your event actions. They are concise and yet explain the situation very well to the player (who might not be playing Germany, nonetheless, and this is important) when he looks at the eventlog.

Much better than, "Oh, goodie - let's do that!" or "Yes, shall we?" Your commands are not vague.

Well done.

(here's a biscuit) Sorry, it just struck me I sounded like I was talking to a little boy in school. hehe

Thank you!

Very interesting. I think the implications for CORE are as follows:

1. A leader can make a huge difference. Just as WWII is inconceivable without Hitler, so too the survival of the Soviet Union depended on Stalin and the British will to fight on Churchill. There should be some chance in CORE that these leaders will be deposed or die or become incapacitated during the war.

2. Desperate times cause superhuman efforts. IC, org and manpower should all increase exponentially when the fatherland/motherland is threatened with annihilation.

Ilkhold said:
That does in no way give any effect on the enemies troops, and I think that also the fortifications are underrated, compared to others in the game. The works bordering France were begun 1936 and by 1938 were using a big part of germany's industrial ressources, but continued till 1940. I think level 3 or 4 for Saarbruecken and one or two less for the other provinces are more realistic.

There's no real way to simulate the intimidation factor on enemy troops. The engine just doesn't give us a way of doing that. Also, the way fortifications work, is there are large jumps in defensive factors between levels. I don't think it would be all that good to go higher than level 2 in general for the line, and probably no higher than 3 for the major redoubts.

Of course the acutal strength of the Westwall is highly debatable, but if you put it too low you can hardly simulate any positive or negative effects of the extensive building or lack of upkeeping.
Level two or three are OK for the actual fighting period, but do not fit the line peak time in 1940.
By the way, germany doesn't get proper defense boni from terrain, because for some reason someone decided, that it has to be all flat and open in the game, it would be unfair to deny it a proper defensive line aswell.

this will require some testing. Make the forts too strong, and the Allies will never break through, too weak, and they will go through too fast. Once we get 0.7 out, we can play with this, and see what levels work best.

Idea

Hey guys, I had an idea for an event if you like it. I think it would be historical to give the US an "The First Atomic Bomb Was Tested" event.
It could say "On July 16th, 1945, the worlds first Atomic Bomb was tested in Trinity, New Mexico. Now the President had a decision to make. Put them into production for use in the war or keep them out of the war. Two Atomic Bombs were already made, but should the US make more and use them?"
This event would give the US Atomic Tech. and 2 a-bombs to use. Hope you guys like it.

I think that, while historical, it gives too much. First off, there's no guarantee the US will even be close to developing Nukes by 1945. Giving them the necessary techs would be a huge boost, and one that may not be entirely appropriate. Second, this gives too much info to any enemy. If you're playing Germany, for example, and see this pop up on your screen, it's a big free intell boost you may or may not deserve. I could see it as a historical flavor event, linked to the development of dirty Bombs, but even then, #2 would still apply.

I don´t know if this event is in CORE alreay but here goes:

HITLERS SUICIDE

Date: Triggered at the fall of Berlin

In 1945 germany had lost the war, it had already started to turn in 1943, but now the allies was pressing into Berlin from three directions: Italy in the south, russia in the east and france in the west.
With berlin surrounded by ever advancing soviet forces, Hitler knew that he would be captured sooner or later, tortured and executed.
He grew mad, issuing commands to non-existant divisions.
Finally, on April 30, the game was over, Hitler married his mistress Eva Braun, and put up his will.
Then he sat down on the sova with Eva Braun and they swallowed their wedding presents, two capsules of arsenic, Hitler also shot himself through the mouth, Eva didn´t, another victim of the suicide was Hitlers alstatian, Blondi, it was used to test that the arsenics worked.
The Hitlers were then burned but the corpses not destroyed by the flames.
In his last will, Hitler made admiral Dönitz Führer of Germany, the few square meters that was germany.
Dönitz emmidiately sued for peace with the allies.

Choices:

They will never catch me alive!

Effect: Dönitz head of state, head of government, DI +10, german dissent +1, soviet dissent +1, triggeres a bitter peace.

I´ll be there to the bitter end!

EVACUATION OF THE GOEBBLES CHILDREN

triggered at the fall of berlin

At the last trembling days of the third reich, it was not only Hitler who hide in the underground bunker, the goebbles family lived there too.
A young pilot, Hanna Reitch made a brave flight to the bunker, the air was littered with soviet bombers.
Her objective was to fly the children of the german propaganda minister Joseph Goebbles to safety.
This plan was never fullfilled, instead Goebbles poisoned his six children: Helga, Heide, Hilde, Helmut, Holde and Hedda.

Evacuate them!
Effect: German dissent -1, manpower -10

They will stay here!
Effect: german dissent +1

THE JEWISH UPRISING

Triggered 19 april 1943 (Not triggered if warsaw is controlled by any other country than germany)

The jews in warsaw had helped evacuate other jews to deathcams, believing that it was for their common good, when they heard that i was in fact death camps, they rebelled.

Effect: german manpower -10, manpower "produced" in warsaw -1

END OF THE JEWISH UPRISING

Triggered 16 may 1943 (Not triggered if the earlier event has not been, even if warsaw is recaptured, how can there be an end to the uprising if there wasn´t a start?)

After almost a month, the jews in warsaw were wiped out with incredible cruelty, the SS destroyed jewish houses everywhere.

They must be punished

Some possible Finnish events

Finland hasn't got many events, so I'll give some suggestions. Unfortunately my source has usually only years, not exact dates. But if some events make it into the mod, I could dig up the dates.

1. Flavor: 1937, the language of instruction in the University of Helsinki changed to Finnish. (maybe -1 dissent?)

2. Politics: 1937, Foreign minister Holsti made a visit to Moscow, declaring the peace willingness of Finland. (communism +5 ?)

3. Politics: 1938, Minister of the Interior, Urho Kekkonen, banned the youth organization, "Sinimustat", of a right wing party, "IKL". (fascism -5, of if negative values aren't possible, then communism +5 ?)

4. Politics: the autumn of 1938, Foreign minister Holsti was forced to resign due to the increasing influence of Germany, because he was regarded as anti-German. (fascism +5?)

5. Politics: the spring of 1938, the USSR began negotiating with Finland to improve the security of Leningrad. They offered weapons and help against the Germans in case of an attack. They wanted to participate in the fortifying of Ahvenanmaa, and they also demanded a couple of islands in exhange for land from the eastern Karelia. The Finnish government rejected the offer(s), despite the advice of Mannerheim.

6. Military: the summer of 1939, the army (using volunteers) began to fortify the border area near Leningrad, "Karjalan Kannas". (Viipuri could have 0 forts in the beginning, but after this event, if the player/ai chooses, it could be fortified?)

7. Military: January 1940, the front of Lapland was handed over to the Swedish volunteers (about 10,000 men).

8. Flavor/politics: the summer of 1940, the refugees were given land and compensation for lost property. (- supplies ?)

9. Military: the summer of 1940, the new eastern border was fortified ("the Salpa-line"), and Finland bought lots of weapons, especially artillery and airplanes, from domestic industry, the USA, Germany and Sweden. 45 % of the budjet of 1940 was given to the army. It has been estimated that the firepower of a Finnish division was tripled!

That was only part of the suggestions I have, if you like some of them, I'll post the rest also.

definitely a possiblity, actually I would consider a -2 on dissent as it would have a quite large impact on national pride I would say.

I agree completely on you proposal for this one. If Finland is stil a democracy maybe also a War Entry reduction of 5 to 10.

negative values are possible so we should go for that one but maybe a +1 on dissent also because it might not have been all that poppular in all circles.

on this one I would probably give a +10 facism and a B option to go with Holsti's line and therefore a -10 fascism.

The exchange of lands are probably not compatible with the existing provinces, so we probably cant do much about this one except a +5 for communism in exchange for some supplies in case the alternative B option is chosen and the finnish accept the proposal.

This is so far into the game that i think it should be up to the player playing Finland to do such preparations, and i case of the ai we could give some fortification priorities to the provinces affected.

We could give finland some techs if you can find some more infor on which specific items were purchased and then make finland pay in supplies or maybe a small increase in dissent because the budget is so heavily burdened by the military expenses that other areas would have had to suffer to meet their demands.

Please bring them on id be happy to give my view on them.

For all of the events it it important that we try and dig up some more excact dates so please try to come up with these. I found that most libraries are more then helpfull in digging up these kinds of information.

Oh. I tested Finland, but the game crashed somewhere in 1938, so I never saw any events (except for the Lotta Organization).

Yes, that's a tricky one. The negotiations should fire after the Anschluss (sp?), and it wasn't just one occasion, there were many meetings. The USSR demanded the islands in the last meeting.

This is so far into the game that i think it should be up to the player playing Finland to do such preparations, and i case of the ai we could give some fortification priorities to the provinces affected.

But couldn't it be possible to give choice a, where you lose supplies and steel, and get atleast level 1 forts? And the choice b, "Do not provoke the USSR", which would lower war entry, and maybe also give -1 dissent, so that this choice would be reasonable too.

Refugees from where?

Damn, I used a wrong word. I meant the evacuees from the lost territories.

We could give finland some techs if you can find some more infor on which specific items were purchased and then make finland pay in supplies or maybe a small increase in dissent because the budget is so heavily burdened by the military expenses that other areas would have had to suffer to meet their demands.
