coz1 - Sounds a fair deal. India should be interesting to conquer.

demokratickid - Always pointy gifts in the end.

Falastur - How about both options?

billy bob - We grovel, then smash.

Oblivious - Trojan camels? A nice concept.

nette001 - Wise words.

Chief Ragusa - Quite right. The diplomatic tools are proving a good investment.

Tokhtamysh II : Part 9
The Horde Council had been gaining influence over the year of Tokhtamysh's reign as the Khan relied more and more upon them for advice. Of late he had even been pressured into economic transparency. On one occasion this had led to an embarrassing incident in which the Khan's choice of female company had been revealed by a series of payments to establishments known to be practising the oldest profession in the world. Fortunately through a few well placed thrats and axes he was able to keep the event under wraps and his reputation suffered little.

When the Chagatai component of Operation Lets Be Friends ended, with the successful assimilation of the Khanate, Tokhtamysh was asked to provide a list of expenses. He was happy to oblige.

Diplomatic Expenses said:
Finest Carpets - 132 ducats
Finest Silks - 13 ducats
Finest Vases - 53 ducats
Sharpening of diplomatic tools - 1 ducat
Diplomat travel to Dsungaria - 3 ducats
Diplomat blood money - 10 ducats
Transport of finest carpets, silks and vases back to Astrakhan - 9 ducats
Total - 222 ducats

Provinces gained - 6
Price per province - 37 ducats

Chagatai is no more. The Silk route is ours. Pity it's not much use anymore. Damn ships.

It was a price decided to be most acceptable. However the removal of the Chagatai Khanate left the Horde without a single ally. It wasn't an issue of great importance but nonetheless Tokhtamysh saw room for improvement. Talks were begun the with Horde's three vassals, Tataristan, Mesopotamia and Poland. All agreed to form the Holy Golden Alliance (not they ever had any other option of course).

For a khan so concerned with appeasing Allah and the religious sectors of society he should have known better. Poland was not Muslim and thus could not be considered holy. When added to his rejection of holy war earlier it caused great anger among some of the extreme Imams.

The 'Holy' Golden Alliance in its latest inkhanation

The outcome of it all was inevitable. On a sunny morning in mid May whilst enjoying a cup of tea in his breakfast nook Tokhtamysh was hacked to death by three assassins. The transition from assassinated Khan to new Khan was by now a well practised routine and the usual agencies swung into action. It would have gone without a hitch and Ulugh V assumed the throne the next day were it not for one little complicating factor. His age.

Ulugh V on hearing the news he is to be Khan

Awwww.... :)

He looks full of righteous fury already.

Indeed, Duke - the new Khan needs to get into the spirit of this holy war stuff. Poland should be turned Muslim, by force or not.

Haha, this could be awesome. I can just imagine the war councils...who will be attacked next? It could be decided by where the baby's rattle lands, thrown onto a world map by the new Khan. After all, there's plenty of chance for accidental and deliberate misinterpretation of royal commands when the Khan can't actually communicate with his nobles. Now that's the kind of random-chance diplomacy that I really love. :D

He's wearing chinese garb. An attack on China - finally. The Poles just want to be on the winning side ...

The Khan died a typical natural death. One trusts the purge of the extreme Imans will be done in strict accordance of Horde tradition - thrown into the path of a rampaging herd of horses.

So the new Khan is a short guy with an attitude - he can either go conquering or marry Carla Bruni.

So we have killer baby khans now? Sweet.

 That makes my day!

Here's to the new khan! May he bring us happiness, war, and rebels. But I repeat myself... :p

germanpeon - You better not be making cute noise at a Khan. That is not advised.

coz1 - And then why stop at Poland?

Falastur - A baby's rattle determining history could be fun.

nette001 - Definitely sounds plausible.

Chief Ragusa - Bah, you're too observant ;) I was hoping that would go unnoticed. Yip one more natural death for the Horde.

PrawnStar - Are not both possibilities?

billy bob - Gotta start early.

demokratickid - I'm sure you'll get your wish.

Ulugh V : Part 1
839-ulugh.png
At the age of only three it was small surprise that Ulugh's administration and military skills left something to be desired. Without even a fully developed vocabulary his diplomacy was only brought up slightly by the fact that foreign envoys tended to consider the miniscule Khans cries of "The Howde will cwush wou all!" to be pretty cute.

The Horde's northern border
So whilst the Khan developed his governing skills (not to mention general motor skills too). The running of the Horde fell to the Horde Council. It was just the opportunity they'd been waiting for. Religious war was soon declared upon Sweden. The enemies allies saw no hope and promptly abandoned Sweden to her fate.

The Horde's armies lead assault after assault upon the measly forts

Soon all of Finland was under the Horde's control and the armies were marching steadily upon Stockholm. So far not even a single battle had gone in favour of Swedes. It was rather pathetic, was there no decent enemy left for the Horde?
837-onwards.png

Even winter has failed to slow the onslaught

An unfortunate consequence of the recent expansion of the Horde was that many heretics now lived within her borders. They were subject, of course, to routine oppression and despite this being the norm at the time they were unhappy. Perhaps thinking the war to be occupying the Horde army throughout the land they rose up in revolt.
838-revolts.png

840-revolts.png

Revolts everywhere. Fortunately Sweden only takes a small portion of the army to defeat

Before the revolts could even be fully contained came news of even greater concern. Austria, along with her Spanish allies had declared war upon Poland, the Christian member of the Holy Golden Alliance. The Horde Council decided that going to war was wise. They also decided that the war combined with the revolts and Ulugh's general ineptitude were signs from Allah. Was the Khan's mandate to rule being withdrawn?

In order to focus upon the war with Austria peace was signed with Sweden. All in all it was a good deal for the King of Sweden. He was allowed to live and keep all his lands. He just had to submit to the Horde and Allah. He would not be the last.

Sweden sees the light

In the screenie above, it looks like the Swedes are running away from the Horde. Classic!

Now cwush those opponents, Baby Khan!

Only 8 revolts. Bah, the Horde's becoming too civilized. That screenshot also appears to show the Horde beseiging Kexholm, their own city. It's not in revolt, either. The Austro-Spanish alliance is the last western alliance capable of standing up to the Horde. Here's hoping they give you a challenge.

What deviousness is this? It would appear that the Swedes of Nyland have had the novel idea of placing their castle on Horde land, thus forcing the Horde to assault its own frontier. Perhaps they seek to confuse the Horde and induce them to march deeper after the initial success, thus starting off a ravishing campaign of pillage and raping all the way back to the Horde's own capital...

Ah well, at least all will correct itself when the Horde recieves its own annexation demand and realises its mistake. And if it induces a few rebellions, well then that will just balance out all the injustice with some good old Horde-style rebel-slaying. So maybe it's not all bad...

Edit: Just realised that the war is already over. But...yeah...my point stands.

On the contrary, I do believe he is being tested.

I'd say the diplomats to the Horde and the baby Khan are pretty stupid....when a THREE year old is convinced that his nation will 'cwush you all' with such passion and conviction....well I'd start thinking things were a bit....disturbing. So Sweden is now Muslim, eh? Here's a question...what is the Horde's land tech right now? I'd think you'd be pretty far behind the western nations. If Sweden's land tech is 55, I can't see the Horde's being near to that. You must have been using overwhelming numbers, eh?
