Well, I can't see it. That link produces an error message. Maybe you should e-mail it to someone?

We might be able to use the German Fighter "Hs123" as the German fighter sprite if another is not available. (Although it would be pretty cool to have the Red Baron's tri-plane as an advanced fighter though.)

Not to mention the Infantry sprites could be useful. Namely the 'british infantry' could be used for many countries not just Britain, such as the US and Portugal.

hullo,

in terms of the french infantry sprites - those pants are bright red, but during most of the war, the french issued less sniper inviting blue uniforms (including pants of same color)

you must have come up with symbols for the different alliances already, but in case you havent i think a simple and easily understadable graphics would be a maltese cross for central powers

and for entente the UK roundel:

for communism of course the hammer and sickle. i know this isnt the best solution, but statue of liberty for allies is i think just as good. besides, it will be easily grasped by everyone very quickly, which side is central powers. of course, if you choose to use them, im sure you can come up with far better graphical representations of them. cheers -L

Resized and trimmed for size that first picture Ladislav posted would make a good icon pic, replacing the standard HOI one.

Yes, we know about the French Blue uniforms but could not resist Pantalon Rouge. We considered offering alternative sprites linked with technology. It might happen, you just never know. Same deal with the Picklehaub. They just look too good!

I've decided to try my hand at graphical editing using Paint Shop Pro.

Background to the screen that shows the game's statistical data - a tactical map of the Battle of the Somme, 1916

And my other attempt is the background for the player's victory at the end of the game - the photograph of the capture of Jerusalem in 1917.

Looks good Allenby, I really like the background for the statistical date. I got to go with StephenT on the Marianne, I think it fits better.

200th Post: Woohoo!!!

you guys are slipping into HOI:Vanilla terminology. This time we do not have a clash of democracy vs. fascism etc. And please, let us for now skip the Wilsonian rhetoric. it is a clash of military alliances: central powers (maltese cross- looking good) and entente (im sorry but Big Ben feels utterly out of place, so does Marianne)

I would rather we use a tri-color roundel. You can try the french version of the roundel too. (both imperial russia, uk, and france had very similar roundels). it just fits much better with the maltese cross and a red star (maybe we should alter the red star from a titled icon to be more in line with the other emblems):

the other backgrounds look really good. i like the somme map the most ;)

I think you're overlooking the ideological aspects of the war, which did on the whole entail putting democracy (except Russia) versus autocratic militarism and then Bolshevism.

In any case, the point of having the triangle is to display ideology, not alignment. A country could be democratic, and still not be apart of the Entente (USA up to 1917) for example. Therefore, the triangle must remain a representation of ideology rather than diplomacy, thus necessitating the use of symbols like Marianne.

Furthermore, it is suitable to favour displaying the ideological over other aspects as this shows what they felt that were genuinely fighting for. It's correct for the time period, at least.

I really like the game selection picture - in fact, I suggest this might be a better picture for the game icon - its a very strong, high-contrast image so should still be recognisable when reduced to icon size.

(Is it just me, or does the standard HoI icon look like a guy in a peaked cap doing a Nazi salute? It's only after I take a second look that I recognise the famous "Soviet sergeant wearing two wristwatches standing on top of the Reichstag" picture...)

For the "defeat" picture, it may be over-morbid but how about a photo of one of the Flanders war cemeteries?

As for the reason for the war, I agree - for the Allied and Associated Powers it was definitely a war of Democracy versus Militarism. The Germans, meanwhile, were defending European culture against Slavic barbarism.

I'd say the war was caused by Austria's imperialist view of the balkans. Serbia would've been attack regardless of if there was a WWI or not.
