Dutch

Infantry = infanterie
Cavalry = cavalerie
Guards Infantry = zwaar infanterie
Attack Division = aanval divisie
Light Infantry = ???
Marine Infantry = Mariniers
Mountain Infantry = berg infanterie
Militia/Levies = militie
Reservists = reserveren
Trench Division = ???
 
Hawaiian

Infantry = Pu'ali kaua ka'i wawae
Cavalry = ???
Guards Infantry = Kia'i Pu'ali kaua ka'i wawae
Attack Division = Ho'ouka kaua


Who am I kidding, there won't be a need for Hawaiin unit names. Can anyone tell I have WAY to much free time. :rofl:
 
about the indonesian names? are they for real?
i mean
pasukan = group/team
jalan = walk
kaki = leg
which i guess translates to "group that marches"

than again, i don't recall what the actual terms myself so you might be right.

i think by the time the westerners came, most malays/indonesians were using anglo-names/terms for their units.
 
ah ok, that clears up alot. cos the names sounded really funny when i was reading them off your list.

anyway, i'm pretty sure your translation is a little too literal. i don't recall anyone calling a soldier or infantry "pasukan jalan kaki" over in Jakarta. and they kinda use english for army terms except pronounced with indonesian alphabet/spelling usually. like i know army is army(ar-meee), police is police(pu-li-ci) so on and so forth.
 
I wouldn't concern yourselves too much with the intricacies of the Indonesian language, as the East Indies are under the control of the Dutch in the 1914-24 timeline. :)

Attack Division - Stormdivisjon (allthough we don't have anything that quite corresponds)

Militia/Levies - Milits (not sure about this one; couldn't think of anything suitable)
Reservists - Heimevern
Trench Division - Festningsdivisjon (literally "Fortress Division")

That has been done but I got the wrong idea. Still, while I'm here I might as well get it off my chest. I don't like naval artillery techs because they are expressed in the units of millimetres, e.g. 350 mm. Maybe this sounds right to continental Europeans but I'd much rather be talking about 14-inch guns instead. Please can the English edition have the correct imperial units of measure...

Just popping in to give a better translation to dutch :)

Infantry = infanterie
Cavalry = cavalerie
Guards Infantry = zware infanterie
Attack Division = aanvalsdivisie
Light Infantry = lichte infanterie
Marine Infantry = Mariniers
Mountain Infantry = berg infanterie (we don't have those obviously :D)
Militia/Levies = militie
Reservists = reservisten
Trench Division = Loopgraaf divisie

Allenby brought that up previously. Understandably, opinions were mixed on the subject. I think the best way would be having dual names, like 102mm (4") gun.

Finnish:

Infantry : Jalkaväki
Cavalry : Ratsuväki
Guards infantry : Vartiosto
Attack Division : Hyökkäysdivisioona
Light Infantry : Kevyt jalkaväki (yes, it is separated) OR Jääkäridivisoona (probably the first name is better)
Marine Infantry : Merijalkaväki
Mountain Infantry: Vuoristojääkärit
Militia/Levies : Nostoväki
Reservists : Reserviläiset
Trench Division : Juoksuhautadivisioona

I think these finnish names are the only and surely best around.
 
OK, I added Finland then. Surprisingly, danish is still missing... :confused: The silence of the serbs is a bit strange also.
 
We aren't silent. We just didn't know about this thread ;). I'm assuming this is what you need:


Infantry - Peshadija (sh stands for a character I can't write here (Dus) Silni from EU2, for example. I think you can get it with alt + 0138)
Cavalry - Konjica
Guards Infantry - Cuvarska peshadija (or just 'chuvar' which corresponds to guards :) )
Attack Division - Napadachka divizija (ch is c with those two lines above. like alt0138 ;) )
Light Infantry - Laka peshadija
Marine Infantry - Marinska peshadija (or marinci/marines :) )
Mountain Infantry - Planinska peshadija
Militia/Levies - Opolchenie (I can't think of a right expression. I'll put the Russian bit here, though I'm not sure how good it is)
Reservists - Rezervisti
Trench Division - Ukopana Divizija (litteraly entrenched division, but I cant think of anything better. If I do, I'll come back here ;))

Updated. You wouldn't want to do Montenegro as well, would you? Or should those names be used too?
