Itis probably more pipe dreams, but what about mountain troops? It would be nice to have some Itallian Bersaglieri complete with crows feathers and French Alpine troops with walking cane, heavy pack, beret and of course, curly moustache! I guess highlanders would be British. And of course, Rommel was a mountain troops Lt. Wurtumberg mountain btn.

If anyone is keen enough to create the sprites Ihave a number of colour photographs of actual uniforms in use.

I'm working on this sprite:

sopwith_camel.bmp

Hope you don't think it's WAY too crappy.

I'll start animating it now. Then I'll try to make Fokkers, maybe a Bleriot XI, bombers... I'm having fun modelling planes. :D So I won't stop when you all say I'm hopeless at it.

Chocks away Ginger! Time to give those devilish huns a damn good thrashing...

Would it be possible to take that sprite and change the symbol to the insignia of other countries? Presumably, the little propeller on the front spins round and round. :)

I never quite understood the British desire to paint targets onto all their vehicles.

Give the enemy a sporting chance!

Belgium. And the propeller will spin when I get around to it, of course ;). I didn't have time for it today, though.

EDIT: It now has landing gear too. I'd forgotten it... Must add those guns.

Belgium? :D Very good!

You could probably do a few more for some of the other countries too. A little red and white crescent for the Turkish Air Force, for example. :)

I doubt the Turks were using Sopwith Camels ;). When I model a Central Powers plane (Fokker Eindekker, maybe) I'll see how it looks with a crescent on.

Canada, Australia and South Africa are all British Empire in TGW, right? No use in making RCAF markings, then. France and the US didn't use the Camel much either, so I'll see about a nieuport for them.

And, of course, I must make one with a nice red cross of christ on white background. The portuguese flyboys will need planes. :D

All you ever wanted to know about Turkish aircraft markings can be found here.

Apparently a black square with a white border was the most common marking, as it was easy to over-paint this over the German Maltese Cross on aircraft supplied by Germany...

As for which Central Powers aircraft to model, this might help:

Albatros D.V - over 1,000 made. Served in Palestine and Italy as well as the Western Front.
Fokker D.VII - about 700 made
Fokker Dr.I (Triplane) - about 300 made
Fokker E.I, II, III (Eindecker) - about 300 made

I'm thinking of the Eindekker because of the sinchronized machine-gun thing. I really should be the German model in it's tech level for that reason, even if it wasn't the most produced. My opinion, obviously, you're free to feel differently about that.

The above is of course limited by the existence of a tech level for the fighters built aroung 1915, early '16, and another for those built in late '16, through '17 and into '18. Or something of the sort, so Germany could have the Eindekker and a good late fighter. As for what that should be, although production numbers should be taken into account (and 900 Albatros D.V were made, not 1,000. But over 1,600 D.Va should be added to that... ;) ), there's also the coolness factor of a red Dr.I... :D.

Sprites in varying levels of completion: (All stand animations are 1 frame. I mean, it's supposed to be stopped, right?)

eindekker_ger.jpg

Fokker EIII (modelled, prop moves, tweaking "motion wobbling", doesn't fire)

sopwith_camel_eng.jpg

Sopwith Camel (almost done, if someone knows how to get the guns to "fire" in Milkshape, please tell me. Otherwise, it's animated, and tested in-game (just doesn't fire in battle ;))

nieuport11_fra.jpg

Nieuport 11 (Pretty much the same as the EIII)

SPAD XIII (No image yet, model isn't really done (just fuselage and wings)

I'm thinking of making a D.H.2 to go with the EIII and the Nie 11 in the Level 1 fighter sprites. Joining the Camel in L2 would be the SPAD XIII and an Albatros (DIII or DV, but then you can't really tell the difference at the size these things are on screen). I'm open to suggestions on the issue of L3 fighter sprites, and other plane types.

EDIT: And I really should give these things a pilot.
