I just created a custom map but it goes to a blackscreen and CTD on the loading screen.

Can someone please check it out? Cheers!

Working on your own TES mod? Fair enough, but you realise there's a team already working on one?
I don't mind the competition, but thought I'd let you know ;)

As for the map not working, that's because it's incomplete, and the source map isn't good enough as a base, you have to manually sharpen the edges of the landmasses to get them to work properly. This can be done simply by using the fill tool multiple times, or you can manually draw along the landmasses to get a finer edge (fill tool will make it boxier).

Of course, though this is more of a personal project for fun, I imagine you have already done all the 'fun' stuff :p

Thanks for getting back to me. Perhaps you could be more specific in regards to what is making it "incomplete"? And by "sharpen the edges" do you mean get rid of the mask's anti-aliasing so it is monochromatic instead of greyscale?

Our map is mostly complete, and I have partially completed portrait sets for Khajiit and Orsimer (though they're on the backburner), and all basic text files are complete (Culture, religion etc). We're working on events, decisions, cbs and that kind of thing right now.

If you zoom in to around 300% or so on a coastline you'll see your coasts are blurred, you need pixelperfect hard edges in all bmps except topology and colormap.dds. By incomplete I was referring to the missing .bmps, I'm not sure if CK2 will like the missing rivers.bmp specifically, I think it's ok without provinces though.

Okay hardened the edges and now I'm just going to test it out, cheers.

For your mod, do you have all the flags you need? I've already made quite a few.

Not really, we've only covered Skyrim, Alinor and a scattering of others right now, however we're only using original art materials, nothing created by Bethesda (we're not for example using flags or pictures from elder scrolls wikia, UESP or other sources for anything other than inspiration).

While it's loading it should say "Loading Map..." "Loading Provinces..." and so on, knowing at which point it's failing can help pinpoint the issue. It looks like it could be adjacencies though, open up the .csv, select all text and replace it with;
Code:

In the first file, the following a completely crash inducing: No colour indexes, not all files present and antialias present.

Those three are huge problems, in and off themselves, that really can't be overlooked.

Ah I didn't check that indepth to see if the indexes had been tampered with.

While I'm here, has anyone figured out how to reduce the texture repeat on maps, and in addition;

Anyone know how to remove the blue shiney from water? It messes with my volcano.

It crashes at 'calculating paths' (took me 10 minutes to work that out, it flick up for a millisecond!). I assume that is perhaps something in relation to movement between provinces? I'll check it out.

Keanon, could you be more specific in relation to 'colour indexes' and 'not all files present'?

Reflections.dds handles the shine on water. Ya can just make it all black to remove the shine/reflection, but it will for all water. Not sure it will solve your problem as it should still display blue, but maybe look better. A potential option is set the toplogy of the lava to 96 96 96, so it will be above sea level, thus removes the water effect altogether. May need to tweak your colors to look proper, as the game still applies some kind of filter to it. I've been playing with this effect in adding dry salt lakes in Tunisia.

So, lakes look terrible when they don't share a border with atleast 2 provinces, I have tried a million funny ways to trick the game to paint borders anyway without success, if we were to write a dev, do anyone think it'd be possible for them to fix it in the future? It's even in the vanilla game and looks aweful, look in Finland!

Yes it would be nice if the devs would remedy this, as the lakes without a border around them do look terrible, I've noticed this a lot on the map I'm trying to map, so I guess I have to cut down on lakes unless they border 2 provinces.

Does anyone have Medieval knowledge on geological areas like the Qattara Depression in Egypt or the various Chotts (dry salt lakes) in the Magreb?? I mean, were they perhaps actual lakes back then? I know Aral Sea and Lake Chad were much bigger back then so have those reflected properly, but can't really find information on those others.

Also, I've gotten a bunch of lakes in my map and don't look so bad to me, but borders wouldn't hurt I guess.

@caligulabob: Nudge edits the vanilla positions.txt, you have to temporarily replace the vanilla positions with your mod's positions.txt, edit, save then put your positions.txt back into your mods folder. As said, it's a devtool, not something originally intended for the enduser so you have to work with what you get.

Man you're a life saver...thought I had to do all that manually

another issue that has stumped me...my mod is done but I have one province (limousin) that is acting funny. Whenever I 'raise army' in limousin, they appear half the map away in Provence and moving an army into Limousin requires the unit to travel to provence first. I cant figure it out. positions.txt is empty, adjancies doesnt have either of them and the province map shows that provence's province is all one pixel color. Not sure whats giong on

If positions.txt is completely empty the game usually defaults to centering everything into the province, so I'm not sure why it would do that with an empty provinces.txt. The only guess I'd have is that the province's unit location is inside provence. Usually it reports that kind of thing in one of the logs (though I can't remember the specific log). Try opening with nudge, finding Limousin and checking the position of the unit in there (it should appear similar to the Marshal sprite in Nudge).

Here is a quick shot of the Maghreb showing my solution for the chotts (dry sea lakes) in the region. I made them part water and part land as they may have had more water during the time period than today.
