I am currently running the game on a 17 inch crt monitor, and my only problem is that I think that the screen is either slightly too big, or too "small" compared to HOI 1. But no biggie.

I am however thinking about getting an lcd 19 inch...will this totally screw up my HOI experience?

You can bet, if the don't fix it, either you have to waste a lot of your lcd, having black borders around, or have it stretched, so it looks like crap, specially for a text-heavy game like this one.

I have thought that LCDs operating in non-native res provide crappy image until recently, but that was true some years ago. I have tried HOI2 on my teemmate's new 19" LCD and it looked perfectly clear.
Then I have tried to switch to different resolutions and compare how does an Excel spreadsheet look like - again perfect. I nearly did not believe it is LCD.
So the bove is true only for old/crappy LCD monitors

Would support for other screensizes where everything outside to right/bottom = black work out?

Yes, if that's the only option we're given.

For those with TFT monitors (me included - guess why I don't play as many games on PC since I swapped my CRT monitor for a 17" 1024*1280 TFT monitor!) that's a much better choice than having a blurred image.

One would expect to have multiple resolutions for the currently most common display resolutions (768*1024, 1024*1200, 1200*1600) but I can't be as disappointed as many others seem to be because a lot of current PC games still does not support higher resolutions. You are bad but not worse than most others. ;-) I think game developers should be given reasonable high resolution TFT monitors. That way games we would have games that would look good on set-resolutions TFT monitors as well as multiple sync CRTs (which is a soon-to-be extinct technology, anyways).

The whole black edges thing does not work for me either. I like having the left bar in Hoi be shorter than down to the History bar. If nto the game looks waaaay to big for me.

How can you instruct the program to run with a black edge around it? I wasn't able to find a switch either in the shortcut or in my ATI card panel display.

I have a 19" LCD monitor with a fixed 1280x1024 resolution, and the blurry image combined with screen flicker genuinely make me nauseous after a while. I never had problems with HoI 1 or EU 2, games which I played for hours and hours during holidays.

Anyway, regarding the fixed 1024x768 rez, some weeks ago I put the tea boiler on the fire, waited for the water to boil, and then *I took it with my bare hand*, getting a good burn. Sometimes you just do something stupid. But my foolish act needed only a momentary lapse of reason, Paradox had two years and a lot of feedback to avoid this "fixed rez" thing

There's a hack to do it for other Paradox games but no one has posted one for HoI2 yet. Laptops sometimes have a function key to do this. I suspect ATI may not support it; my newest laptop has an ATI Mobile 9700 that doesn't do the black box except for certain resolutions.

Yeah... I need 800x600 rez because my computer isn't very good... so i have some problems playing the game... if only the game could run in 800x600... But i believe that paradox will make it! :] offcourse it will... will it?

Yes! I don't matter i only want to play this game because I LOVE IT... :]

Little introduction:
Sorry - i'm speak english only little - forgive me this.

Dear Paradox Team!
I'm 26 y.o. I was with you few years. EU, EU II, HOI - I loved this games!
I have bought this all title and enjoyed this with pleasure. It was great! You were the best of the best (I'm history teacher - specialization: II World War)
You think about your fans and create for us! I was impressed. I was...

Yet I changed my mind. I have bought Hearts of Iron II...
This game don't support change resolution tools! This is unfair - Hoi_settings was in Hearts of Iron. My monitor can support max resolution 800 * 600 - this is great problem because res was locked on 1024*768. I hope you made something with that. I'm not alone. Fans wants to have this resolution tool. Please, do that for us. For fans - we wants to be with you FOREVER!

I don't want sell my HOI2. I can wait for patch and I'm waiting. I hope that Paradox Team do this for fans.

Yep, I'm not buying this game till it is FINISHED. A game that doesn't support multiple resolutions in 2005 it's simply, well, how would I put it without hurting Johan's feelings? It's unprofessional, it's cheap, specially when Hearts of Iron 1 supported 3 resolutions.

I want to use my full 17" of my Samsung 710T, not just a part of it, or have it stretched so it looks like crap and makes me have headaches.

Agreed, I won't buy it either. Not until this is fixed. If it isn't, well I bet I can find something else to spend my money on. It's too bad though because I've been longing for this game since it was announced.

Like alot of other people have been saying: It's 2005 and a game should run in more than one screen rez. Actually there are no, I say again NO, excuse for making a game that won't.

Yeah at least you guys had the foresight not to just "help out" the developers and pre order on the presumption that minor attributes such as this and fully developed sprites would have been part of the game.

Just played enough now to give a good statement

Well, I'm having a 17'' TFT, so 1280*1024 is standard resolution...

Even it's a cheap monitor(Acer AL1713) and it isn't best to work at 1024*768, it's not that hard to do say, I don't have any large problems with it...

I'm not saying that you shouldn't fix it, but if I would have to question if I'm for a smarter AI or a 1280*1024 res., I would be for the AI :)

Just make it easy on the eyes. allow us to crank down the resolution to 800-600 on full screen. I can't imagine it's too difficult since other Paradox games have it already. Do developers get tunnel vision because they work on the best equipment with the HUGE monitors, that they forget their customers have regular off the shelf small monitors? Give our eyes a break. Listen to your customers.

Suggestion for a poll: what ONE resolution would you most like to see added to HoI2 (and/or future Paradox games)?
800x600
1280x960
1440x1080
1600x1200

I'd be happy with any of the last three but 1600x1200 is preferred. I doubt there's enough demand to justify 800x600.

(Widescreen modes would be nice but probably very unlikely unless Johan gets a widescreen laptop that he wants to play on. :) )

Actually more have asked for 800x600 than any of the others.
