Our friends the Jerx are back.

Do we know yet whethr it contains a tech? - It would say if it did. This one doesn't.

And in the radiant no less... - Yeah. Good luck with THAT. One of our Particle Lances is deployed there, for one thing.

The Jerx scout is just ignoring the Mineral Flow Freighter that is headed for Comet 13, and is instead moving into the inner system.

That suits us fine, since our Trade Route Protection squadron is based there.

Twenty more years, and this game will pass the century mark. Started in 1948.

We lost track of the Jerx for a while, when he left the sensor-zone of Watkins Resources Group... but we've picked him up again as he approaches Franklin Limited.

These civilian companies don't have RADARs, but they do have modest Passive arrays and they report what they see.

The Jerx seem to be headed toward the Franklin Ltd / McLean Minerals Ltd mines... possibly to raid them for slaves.

The Jerx scout notices us... and instead of fleeing, he turns toward us!

EDIT: ... and he turns away and flees. It was just a bluff.

Almost in range.

In range, but we'll close in to 270,000 km before opening fire.

Firing at 270,000 km range. Two hits with the opening salvo.

Immobilized it after a few salvos. Not long now.

Another one bites the dust.
Is it just me or are they usually trying for systems they haven't visited before?

Yeah... they seem to aim for weakly-held systems, which means systems at the fringe of Known Space.

A Typhos!

sc-1866.jpg

This will be a formation of from four to six ships.

The Typhos is the Slaver vessel. It's huge, and is always spotted at ranges where the escorting Jerkmobiles and Achernars are still undetectable.

So while we only see one ship, we can confidently expect a squadron of at least four.

The Typhos formation is more than a billion kilometers away, so this will take a while.

Maybe they can't make out details at first, so they act on the estimate that "maybe it's a colonization vessel with lots of slaves" and then when they get a bit closer or make out more details then they go "ooor maybe it's a big-ass warship".

It's a formation of one Typhos, one Jerkmobile and two Achernar PD vessels.

The Typhos, as advertised, is huge.

Another enemy formation!

Note that we've spotted these two Jerkmobiles by their RADAR emissions.

sc-1870.jpg

They are well outside our RADAR range and would not have been spotted had they stayed dark.

Very likely, this is another full formation of ships rather than just a pair.

Being huge makes it easier to hit, right?

Sort-of.

If a ship is smaller than the granularity of our RADAR (eg: an 800-ton FAC vs R100 RADAR) then it can sneak in quite a bit closer before getting spotted. That's the trick I've been using with our Scouts. 6,000-ton ships, Stealthed down by -90% to a RADAR signature of 600 tons.

Big ships just get no "smallness" bonus. Even Stealth is completely useless if the ship is too big... a 100,000-ton ship stealthed at -90% is still 10,000 tons.

I've got a second group of Sabres on the way as reinforcements... but I can't really picture ANY number of Pirates beating our original group of four Sabres unless they can run them completely out of repair parts.

... and there's a depot full of spares on the Radiant itself. Thirty-seven thousand of them. AND one of our rare Particle Lance STOs.
