Not close enough yet.

He moves so fast that he can burn a lot of the missile's fuel just by turning and running directly down-range.

So we'll wait until we can see the whites of their eyes.

On stalks, presumably.

Now at 53 million km from the jump point.

We'll pop through when he's about 20 or 25 million km away.

I figure that at that range we'll have plenty of time to recover from jump shock, and even at 20,441 kps he can't possibly escape either by going forward or back.

Assuming he keeps going, and actually gets that close.

A small task force composed of an Admiral class AWACS vessel and six modern(ish) Fighters forms up to intercept the approaching enemy scout.

The Fighter Pilot Rowan of Elton is the ranking officer.

They are waiting hidden behind the jump point, as the enemy scout comes closer...

I take it such AWAYS scouts are not particularly valuable to be captured for intel or such? Because otherwise, a stealth ship with a boarding party and powerful acceleration might catch one investigating.

Your chance of boarding successfully depends on speed advantage over the target, with a 5-to-1 speed advantage equating to 100% success, and all unsuccessful boarding attempts result in the automatic elimination of the Marines.

... so a 20,000 kps target is hard to board.

Now 22 million km from the jump point.

That's just about perfect.

We have a hard lock on him with the AWACS.

The Fighters will be out of jump shock in half a minute.

Maybe we should just fire three of the Fighters. They carry three missiles each.

Realized that we're at an ECCM-3 vs ECM-6 disadvantage - that will be a -60% penalty - so I decided to fire everything.

That's the second out of four known Mayenne scouts, whacked.

Who got the kill credit? :)

One of the no-name Fighter pilots, flying the #4 Fighter.

Rowan of Elton is in the #1 Fighter.

With hundreds of Fighters, we typically have only one named character in each Fighter squadron. Sometimes none.

A Tug has finished towing the captured enemy Gard back to Earth, and it is entering a 40,000-ton repair dock now.

We'll fix it up before tearing it apart and reverse-engineering all the alien components. That way, we'll have more toys to play with.

The repair efforts will require about 15 months. Not counting the time it takes to scrap it afterward.

That's longer than I thought.

No matter, we still need all the military engines we can get.

As an aside, I've started rereading the game just to go hunting for good threadmarks. I know, I'm crazy.
Hence the smileys on page 1 posts.

Even if you only read Emu's posts, that is still quite a commitment. Good luck.

Happycat has reached the Alpha Centauri system and begun exploring it!

Our first jump point exploration!
An excellent threadmark.

Done.

First encounters with the Modrons and with the Bork would be two more useful ones.

Will take me a few days at the least. The discovery of the Radiant, the nuking of that Rakhas planet, the Statue of Wagonlitz are also things that come to mind. And the Jerx.
Also, precursors.

Commander Happycat is the first person to encounter Aliens!

I suggest a rapid withdrawal. We should leave (if they allow it).

If this is the Precursors, then it won't matter what we decide to do... Commander Happycat is doomed.

If this is NOT the Precursors, then this is likely to be their home system, given the habitable planet. So we should LEAVE as quickly as possible, and send a Diplomatic vessel instead. Diplomatic vessels do not raise inter-species tension by being in your star system. Other vessels (including Scouts) do raise the tension.

First contact.
Aliens in Struve 2398. The precursors. Another threadmark.

Our current Diplomacy rating with the Bork is +47 and very slowly improving.

But we can only see "our side" of the relationship, of course. Not theirs.

Our Diplo rating with the Modrons is -2,032.

That's great news. At least we know it's possible to get peace with them, if their xenophobia isn't too high.
