PDX delivered 3 different sets of human portraits, two of which require no DLC. If you used one new human portrait and one legacy portrait, it would make it more clear that the game treats them as different species.

I am pretty sure the exact point is that two identical species using the same portrait will be treated by the game as different species just due to them being in two different starting empires. Which I am pretty sure is not WAD but an oversight (as the game was supposed to treat them as the same, but an update might have broken something).

The previous design was that same portrait + same name = same species.

But you're allowed to set same name + same portrait for prepatents and serviles in the origins that provide those.

Instead of changing the code to forbid same name + same portrait when creating a custom empire, someone after Necroids decided to break the previous design.

You can change species name when you make a new Template. Bio Ascension gives you the power to change portraits, too. This combo of changes was previously able to merge species in a portrait category into a single Template via genemodding, which was convenient and powerful. That was broken by this change, too.

I'm not a fan of this design breakage.

Let's face it. The Paradox DLC policy is great for players who pick up the game early but not so much for new players who start now and see the huge list of DLCs to buy.

Aren't those both from the original human portrait set? Being different would make the joke actually work.

I spent too long staring at this trying to think of what the joke could actually be (aside from real life sexism or real life racism).
The joke is that the two human portraits are incompatible even if both species are "Human" because of how the code works, last I checked. It's nothing to do with racism, stop saying that before you derail the conversation into some stupid Reddit-tier slinging contest and we all get banned while the thread gets locked.

Here's an ancient meme to get us back on track.

It takes an astonishing lack of self awareness to reach back 12 posts, to a different page, to throw out a hot take on a point which has already been explained and discussed, and (in the same breath) chastise someone for derailing the thread.

Use it for future reference, and considering the fact that this entire page so far has been nothing but analyzing PDX's DLC policy, I'd say it's still quite derailed.
Here's another meme.

More Xeno Compatibility [very inappropriate word, for using which you might get a "warning with no points assigned" (sic!)]. If you know, you know.

Besides, shouldn't Serviles utilization for Xeno Compatibility be, like, illegal or something?

Found this on Reddit so I'm giving credit as usual.

Serviles are less intelligent, but they aren't animals (though fanatic xenophobes might disagree with that).

I can't figure out how this is related to Stellaris.

Sorry for asking you to explain the joke, but could you explain the joke?

The description of them in the Syncretic Evolution Origin says "most of them have the intelligence of a particularly dim-witted child."

So yeah, they may not be animals but they're clearly not intelligent enough to consent.

Primitive refrigeration technology is so fascinating. Amazing how they were able to achieve useful cooling from nothing more than a two-chambered ceramic pot.
All the food is decomposed and smells terrible for some reason. I guess humans just have weird diets.

Good point. Though there are plenty of adult humans in real life with the intelligence of a particularly dim-witted child ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

According to an old (possibly apocryphal) quote:

Back in the 1980s, Yosemite National Park was having a serious problem with bears: They would wander into campgrounds and break into the garbage bins. This put both bears and people at risk. So the Park Service started installing armored garbage cans that were tricky to open -- you had to swing a latch, align two bits of handle, that sort of thing. But it turns out it's actually quite tricky to get the design of these cans just right. Make it too complex and people can't get them open to put away their garbage in the first place. Said one park ranger, "There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists."

Really puts some context to Yogi Bear's claim about being smarter than the average bear.

I'm only a nice empire in half of my playthroughs. But there is a mystical dark influence that affects players who play for long enough and causes them to take pride in being xenophobe. So far I have resisted the corruption to cross fully to the other side.
