I have been thinking of Swabia, and letting them become both KoI and polish kings would make them too strong, perhaps. Maybe a protestant Swabia can't become KoI, but will inherit Silesia (and still Milan, but not KoI), while a catholic Swabia won't inherit Silesia, but will inherit Milan and claim KoI (or they will just inherit KoI if Milan already have claimed it). We can of course have a Swabia both inheriting Silesia and KoI, but then we do not have Swabia as a medium power any more, but truly a major.

As I said, I think Swabia should be a true major, for balance reasons. But there could still be concerns about it inheriting both northern Italy and the rich part of Poland - it might not add up to a big country, but it's an extremely rich one, and is likely to get even stronger if it beats up Bavaria (as it should at least some of the time).

The inheritance of Milan is likely to have to happen before the Reformation anyway, as both countries desperately need the strength early on if they are not to be squished. But forcing the Habsburgs to make a hard choice when the Reformation comes is a good idea.

The swabians could have problems in Italy if they go protestant, not losing Milan, but losing their claim on the KoI. But a catholic Swabia should not be able to inherit the protestant Silesia, the silesian nobles would not accept that, so if Swabia is going for dominance of northern italy they should choose catholic, if they are pleased with their possessions in Northern italy, not interrested in more, they should go protestant and inherit Silesia. (A Swabia with german, polish and italian culure would still be quite a power, maybe losing italin culture if they go protestant).

It's not clear whether ArchDuke intended Swabia to be a minor or a major power, and in a sense it's on the border - often it gets annexed, sometimes it persists as a minor, and quite a few times I've seen it become really strong. It has enough cultures to count as a major and some very juicy cores, but its event file is too sparse.
Actually, I'm the writer of most (all?) swabian events. Although ArchDukes first intention was to keep Swabia a minor I got an ok to make it a medium power (which kind of satisfied me in my quest for making Swabia a power).
Simply, it would be nice to see my little Swabia turned into a potential major. :)

My event :)
You should re-write it or just delete it, since;
1. this seems to be the first event in a chain and
2. I don't remember what I wanted to do with this event and
3. it doesn't make much of a sense to grant independence AND inherit (unless I meant Milan to be newly inherited by some reason)
Cheers.

swiss culture?

For those writing the Swabian file, I had some questions. Why don't we still have 'swiss' culture in Bern and Schwyz? Swabia could have two cultures, 'swiss' and 'german', and then if it chooses Milan, it could - after some time - take on 'italian and drop the 'german', or 'swiss'. Could be quite a dynamic file, with otions to drop into or out of the german/italian theatres.

Iirc, in Aberrated history there never was an independent Switzerland, so there is no chance for a distinct Swiss culture to form.

Ok,

I am about to embellish the Swabian file, on the basis of stuff proposed in the rest of the german threads and what you've all noted above. A lot of what's noted below are existing events, but any new stuff are my ideas to provoke a reaction.

Major themes:

1400
Claims on Baden and Tirol
The Italian heritage of Karl I (relocated from 1519, and Friedrich instead of Karl)
The Swiss Revolts
Arsenal of Freiburg

1500
Luther
Reformation
If Capital in Zurich and Protestant - War of Religion
If Capital in Milan and Catholic - Revolts in Wurtemburg, Baden, Bern and Schwyz

1600
Split and restoration of the Hapsburg line, involving split along the Alps.
If Capital in Milan and Catholic - Expulsion of the Philosophers
If Capital in Zurich and Protestant - Rise of the Philosophers

1700
Anschluss with the Hohenstaufens ?
Creation of Lombardia ?
Creation of Germany ?

1419 Albert V (779) reigns.

1420 - 1820 "The claim on Wurtemburg" event deleted. Swabia start with this core already.... :D
1420 - 1820 "The claim on Baden" - gets a core on Baden if it doesn't exist.
1420 - 1820 "The claim on Tirol" - gets a core on Tirol if it doesn't exist.

1422 "Albert V marries Elizabeth, daughter of Sigismund" Royal Marriage and +100 Relations with Hungary.

1439 "The Death of Albert V" Ladislas Postumus (887) reigns.

1447 "End of the Visconti" Milan chooses between rival claims to the Milanese throne.
a) Ladislas Postumus, +100 relations SWA, +1 INN, triggers Vassalage and Alliance with SWA. BUR get CB on SWA and MLO.
b) "Charles d'Orléans", +100 relations BUR, +1 ARI, triggers Vassalage and Alliance with BUR. SWA get CB on MLO
c) "Francesco Sforza", Milan ruled internally by Sforzas. BUR and SWA get CB om MLO.

1450 If a) above, and no war with SWA, then BUR get a version of the "Support Dissidents Abroad" event, targeting Bern and Schwyz provinces, costing BUR 100 ducats, -50 Relations with SWA, and triggering "The Swiss Revolts".

1451 "The Swiss Revolts" IF Tax Collectors in Bern and Schwyz, then revolt against heavy-handed Swabian tax collectors (and Swabian absorption of Milanese throne...?)
a) "Put down with military force" -2000 Desertion, Revolt in Bern, Schwyz, Revoltrisk +5 for 60 months.
b) "Relieve their tax burden" Revoltrisk+2 for 60 months, -2 Provincetax Bern and Schwyz. Sleeps "More Swiss Revolts" event.

1455 "More Swiss Revolts"
a) "Put down with military force". Revolt in Bern, Schwyz, Revoltrisk +5 for 60 months, provinceculture in Bern and Schwyz changes to swiss, -50 Relations with BUR .

1457 "The Death of Ladislas Postumus". End of the Hapsburg line ( :confused: he dies without an heir?), his cousin Friedrich V (976) reigns, makes peace with BUR (+100 relations), -5 Revoltrisk in Bern and Schwyz.

1470 If SWA own Milan, it will have earnt a core on it and have finally gained italian culture.

1480 If Swabia own and have a core on Milan then Friedrich has a choice to expand his empire, fortify italian relations and seek the safety of the relatively peaceful Italian peninsula.

1490 "The italian heritage of Friedrich" moved forward to have it resolved before the Reformation.
a) "Stay in Zurich", add cores of Pfalz and Mainz if NOT owned by Bavaria.
b) "Move to Milano", reverse country cultures, move capital, add Italian cores of Lombardia, Mantua, Siena, Firenze and Emilia.

1493 "The Death of Friedrich V". Maximilian I (977) reigns.

1518 "The Final Choice of an Italian King"
IF Milan is capital, then Maximillian must choose whether to maintain the Milanese palace despite the calls for a return to german lands.
a) "Stay in Milan", lose cores on Baden and Alsace, lose german culture, become MLO.
b) "Move back to Zurich", never get the choice of moving to Milan again, lose cores on everything Italian except Milan. Lose italian culture if he turns Protestant.

1518 "The Final Choice of a German King"
IF Zurich is the capital, then Maximilian must choose whether to maintain his palace in Zurich despite intense calls for a relocation to Italy.
a) "Stay in Zurich", lose cores on everything Italian except Milan, lose italian culture.
b) "Move to Milan, never get the option of moving back to Zurich, lose cores on Baden and Alsace, become MLO. Loses german culture during Reformation is still Catholic.

1519 "The Death of Maximillian I". Karl I (887) reigns.

1521 "Martin Luther and Karl I"

lots of possibilities here:

If the capital is in Milan, then Martin Luther gets chivvied off to Saxony, quietly. Stays Catholic.

If the capital is in Zurich, and SWA still has italian culture, then Karl supports Luther, but does not harbour him, and delays turning Protestant.

If the capital is in Zurich, and SWA does not have italian culture, then Karl supports and champions Luther. Starts crusade.

Still to Come:
The swabian Reformation.

Mike,

More great work. So pleased that Swabia will be joining the ranks of the Majors and have such an interesting storyline.

I will need to work closely with you on one major issue, which is how Burgundy will relate to the western German states, especially Swabia.

At the moment the 'Germans' and the 'French' are sort of doing their own thing, with few interrelating events. Of course, the players change all of that in the way they actually play the game, but we need to think of some more concere interractions.

One of the big ones will be in how Swabia responds to the first critical Burgundian event where Phillipe decides to become King of Burgundy or else retain his claims on France. Is Swabia goign to be pro-Burgundian? Would they prefer Phillipe the Good or Phillipe the Great? Would Phillipe the Great and his dreams of the French crown force Swabia into an alliance with Savoy or would they support Phillipe seeing him as a 'winner' and good long-term bet?

Sorry, there was a power outage here, and my Reply got sent before I was finished. This is what I meant to say...

I think their relations will be affected more by the width and length of the Rhine than anything else.

There are a couple of possibilites though:

1420
Under Albert, Swabia has a clear germanic expansion policy, and a "Good" Phillipe doesn't concern him very much. However a "Great" Philipe is someone with whom he must foster relations, to ensure that Phillipes Greater France is truly French, and not german. Perhaps there is an event which describes a meeting with them, secures better relations, a Royal Marriage, and ensures that they have divided up their respective bits of Europe over opposites sides of the Rhine.

1447
The Milan Visconti dies, and both Albert and Phillipe le Grand claim it's throne. Action_a has Swabia winning, and thus setting up the whole Italian Inheritance events. Under this scenario, le Grand then forments dissent among the swiss peasants in Bern and Schwyz as described in my potted history above, then gets cores on those two provinces if they actually DO change provincecultre to swiss.
However under le Bon, Burgundy don't contest the Milanese crown, but provide support to the Italian nobles, so if they DO choose Sforza, they can guarantee a RM, cash and a Proclamation of Guarantee from Burgundy. This makes it Sforza option perhaps more palatable to a human player of Milan.

1480
Friedrich of Swabia chooses to move to Milan, or to stay in Zurich. If he stays in Zurich, Charles and he consolidate the agreements their fatehrs made 60 years ago. If he moves the palace to Milan, it does two things.
It creates a vacuum in southern germany, and Charles of Burgundy takes the chance to claim Alsace and perhaps Baden, and once taken Alsace perhaps turns provinceculture french.
The second thing it does is to make Friedrich more careful about protecting Savoy, and perhaps being allied to it against a rampant Burgundy.

Essentially with the first big choice the player is selecting not only their aggressiveness, but also the cultures they can hope to include. With Phillipe le Grand they will have only French culture but if they form France they can convert some occitan provinces to French eventually.

With le Bon, the culture for the core provinces will eventually become Burgundian and some provinces (Lorraine and maybe the Swiss provinces) can also convert to Burgundian. But they will also have the chance to gain either German or Dutch culture. Not sure how this will happen yet, but that's the plan.

So, in fact, the Burgundy that is more liekly to have conflict with Swabia is le Bon. (Not the man himself so much, as the that which comes after him. Burgundian culture is not gained until/unless Charles comes to the throne and follows his father's path.) That's the path where Burgundy turns 'east' and will have a greater interest in Germany. Or to the north in Holland. Is there another opportunity for the line in Swabia to be under question?

Maybe if the throne goes to Milan there are revolts in 'Switzerland' and that's when Burgundy could intervene, citing the original Burgundian ownership of the region.

Ok so since Hapsburgs did not go to austria and for some reason Bavaria already early on has cores on dutch lands the swabians sat there giving them the possibility to marry around in the area possibly getting milano nobility to support them once they take milano.

Why do Bavarians have some lowlands? It pulls the heat away from swabia and gives them a chance to develop. it puts bavaria in conflict with hansa. which both are good reasons. But not truly good explanations.

In vanilla (real history) Austrian Hapsburgs scheme to be the emperors for for centuries (1273 - 1291, 1298 - 1308, 1438 - 1740, and 1745 - 1806) earning an enpire where the sun never sets.

Swabian Hapsburgs get Itallian and german cultures.

Pretty good. Not Austro-Dutch-Spanish-Hungarian Empre but who wants the "Blob" in Abe. Bavaria already can do much of that

The reason that Bavaria has the Lowlands is because just before the start of the game and for the first few years after the normal vanilla game start they held a substantial portion of the Lowlands. Same reason that they have Brandenburg, aberration assumes that the Wittelsbachs were never forced out of Brandenburg or their Dutch possessions.

Ok,

I have done some reading and some writing. The following is presented for comment on direction, and idea. I will check the coding myself when the 1400's are finished.

I have yet to add a chunk of events about Swiss Conferacy Revolts.

1400 and the Habsburg Succession

Unlike the current Swabian Abe version, I propose no pre-game-time Aberration of the Habsburg lineage. I retain their crushing of the Swiss Confederacy at the battle of Sembach, which secures Bern and Schwyz.

In 1419, the Hapsburg line is split into Albertine and Leopoldine lines. The descendants of Albrecht V rule Austria ( the province of Austria only (which I have stolen from Bohemia... :rolleyes: ), having lost Ostmarch to the Bohemians, and Salzburg to the Bavarians), ceding control of lands in Bohemia and Hungary along the way to local nobles.

The descendants of Leopold are split again, with Friedrich IV as Duke of Tirol and Vorderosterreich - aka "Swabia", consisting of Alsace, Schwyz, Bern, Wurttemburg with it's capital in Zurich. Tirol and Baden are Vassals). His bitter rival and brother Ernst ('the Iron') rules Innenosterreich ("Steiermark"), which consists of Steiermark, Istria and Krain (which I have stolen from Croatia... :rolleyes: )

However with the death of Duke Friedrich IV in 1439 things begin to Aberrate. Instead of "Vorderosterreich" being ruled from Steiermark before Sigismund is old enough to become Duke, a Council of Nobles (the "Adeligerat") close to the old Duke take on the guardianship of his son. This sours relations between Steiermark and Swabia, and a reunification of the Leopoldine Hapsburg line becomes more remote. Suddenly the Hapsburg line that looks so tremendous in the RW, aberrates into pieces.

Sigismund is a weak Duke and a gambler. But he marries well. IRW he marries Eleanor Stuart, the duaghter of King James of Scotland. But in Aberration, the Habsburgs are not quite as marriageable. Sigismund settles for the daughter of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan, the determined, clever and ambitious Bianca in 1441.

The Adeligerat maintain their power during Duke Sigismund's ascendancy and are then influenced by Bianca who promotes her illegitimate son Phillip at the death of the childless Duke.

Habsburg Succession only

Since yesterday:

General editing and spelling revisions, again, 1400-1500.

Swabian transformation into Milan added and edited from Kaigon's original idea. It now occurs between 1493 and 1516 after Sigismund's death, but before Phillip I dies. Most importantly, before the Reformation.

AsI understand many alternatives are opened for Swabia, and I like the main themes: An italian catholic Swabia with mainly italian cores, A german protestan Swabia with mainly german cores, and an alpine Swabia with a possible late conversion to protestantism with moderate german and italian cores.

Mike, here are my comments, by event.

event = {
id = 233101
name = " The death of Ernst the Iron. "

command = { type = breakdynastic which = SWA } #does this code work?

Yes it does. Nice little event.

event = {
id = 233102
name = " The death of Friedrich IV. "

I don't think both options should give examty +1 stability change. Surely one is less stabilizing than the other. And anyway, maybe neither ought to increase stability. Stab doesn't normally go up when there's a new monarch, and there has been no decrease to justify an increase.

Also, if you increase the MIL and ADM score you ought to drop the DIP score in both cases, given that the monarch is now partly takin orders from elsewhere.

event = {
id = 233103
name = " The death of Friedrich IV."

Great to see you carefully considering alternative version that would be necessary.

event = {
id = 233104
name = " The Ascendancy of Sigismund "

You might need to have an extra event in the STR file to lower the relations between them so that they cannot be DiploAnnexed before Sigismund gains the age of Majority.

event = {
id = 233106
name = " Bianca Visconti "

action_b = {
name = " No, she is as ugly as her father "
command = { type = relation which = MLO value = -25 }
command = { type = DIP which = -1 value = 24 } #to reflect the stupidity of the choice
}

Yes, but, remember I have this Lorraine event wherin Swabian can inherit Lorraine because Sigismund's son marries the Lorraine heiress. None of that would work in the Bianca model you propose, but it would if the player/ai rejects her. Also, I don't think you ought to double punish someone. If option B is a bad decision it will carry its own negatives.

event = {
id = 233108
name = "End of the Visconti in Milan"

Cool.

event = {
id = 233109
name = "End of the Visconti in Milan" - Orleans

Does someone refusing marriage really give such a CB? Where does Sigismunds 'claim' come from?

event = {

Ditto

event = {

+2 seems a touch high ...

event = {

command = { type = trade value = 500 } #Reflecting Bianc'a work among the traders.

Surely that is already reflected in the massive +4 per month Sigismund's ADM gets from marrying her?

I don't like the stab -1, personally. Also, you will need to include:

command = { type = capital = 389 }

event = {

country = SWA
name = " The Death of Bianca, Duchess of Swabia "

Very very cool.

event = {

Presumably this Phillip would be the guy that could inherit Lorraine through marriage ....

Whoa, that's a LOT of cores to get. Also, you'll need to test the lose/add countryculture to see if it works. Might need to be two separate events. Or, because they become Milan, it might immediaely adopt only the Italian culture that Milan has, so the first line might be unnecessary But good thinking.

This is all great work here, Mike. Well done. I would love to see these events also create changes in leaders. Also, what kinds of interractional events have you considered for Bavaria, Genoa and the German minors?

yourworstnightm said:
The swabians could have problems in Italy if they go protestant, not losing Milan, but losing their claim on the KoI. But a catholic Swabia should not be able to inherit the protestant Silesia, the silesian nobles would not accept that, so if Swabia is going for dominance of northern italy they should choose catholic, if they are pleased with their possessions in Northern italy, not interrested in more, they should go protestant and inherit Silesia. (A Swabia with german, polish and italian culure would still be quite a power, maybe losing italin culture if they go protestant).

I would not necessarily buy that. The ultra catholic Bavaria had no major problems in accepting the Palatinate branch of the family inhereting; well they did have to change religion. So give Swabia the same option, as well as allowing the crown to pass to a sidebranch of the family and gaining SIL as a vassal.
