Yes, I like the idea to lower the morale..what about paganism? The greenlanders had their own bishopric but the Vinlanders must have been in contact with the "Skrälingars" believes..

Don't forget the Vinlanders themselves (some of them) Probably persisted with their own old beliefs of Asatru (Odinism). If they were isolated from the rest of Europe (Especially the Pope), even the Christian Vinlanders may have reverted back to the old ways.

At the very least I think some of their provinces should probably be pagan. This is how it is in the IGC....

Here are some changes we could make to the provinces.csv. I have filled in some city names Havard has given before, And I changed the culture of Gander from Abenaki to Scandinavian (Makes sense because if that is to be their capital of 1000) and I changed the resource of Vestbygden from Furs to Ivory, I have been reading some of the Sagas which state that Ivory was the top trade good between Vinland and Europe.

I have highlighted the changes I had made:

Re culture and Greenland gov.

Great idea!

Just a couple of comments - from what attention I've paid to my lectures this semester (I'm actually supposed to be studying some of this stuff), Greenland's government was not as, well, 'republican' as that of Iceland. At least initially, settlers came at the invitation of Erik the Red, and everything was pretty much under his personal control. Though obviously the basic lower level structures would have been similar.

And perhaps the Iceland/Gaelic thing someone remembered is related to the small numbers of Irish Christians mentioned in the Book of the Icelanders? Unsurprisingly, they 'went away' when confronted by large numbers of pagan Norwegians...

Hope that's some help. And apologies if I've got anything wrong.

Any help is welcomed :)

You are right about Greenland. In the beginning it was settled by Erik the Red (who had to leave Iceland for murder... the same reason his father fled Norway and came to Iceland :rolleyes: ) and from the beginning it was more of a Chiefdom than a republic... My guess (I haven't studied this thorough enough) is that there were still a thing (assembly), and that in the centuries after Erik's death they acted much as Iceland (until they both got annexed/subjugated by Norway 1261/2).

There were Irsh monks there yes. They were not many, and either went away or "went away" ;) when the Norwegians arrived. Anyway - they certainly didn't get many decendants there :p

About the amount of British settlers: The Icelandic Book of Settlements (Landnámabók) names the homes of 1003 of these immigrants. Of them 846 came from Norway, 30 from Sweden, 1 from the Faroes, and 126 from the British Isles (Ireland, 52, Scotland, 31, Hebrides, 26, and Orkneys, 4). These "British" settlers were mostly norse or from the norse influed parts of Scotland and Ireland. They also brought with them a large amount of gaelic slaves, and the ratio of these to the population is debated, but it has been estimated to 13% based on genetics.

Names!

We need names! I really want to redo some of the leader/monarch names from the IGC scenario. We can also add our own names for random leaders :)

This is top 20 male names from the Icelandic book of Settlements (Landnámabók):

Þorsteinn, Þórðr, Þorkell, Þorbjörn, Þórir, Þorgeirr, Helgi
Þórarinn, Ketill, Bjórn, Þorgrímr, Grímr, Þórólfr, Þorgils, Einarr, Eyvindr, Þorvaldr, Ormr, Þormóðr, Oddr

And, of course, the original norse variant of my hame: Hávarðr :D

The same person has also compiled a list of bynames/nicknames:

inn gamli = old
goði = priest, local leader
inn hvíti = white
inn sterki = strong, powerful
inn auðgi = rich
inn rauði = red
inn spaki = wise
inn svarti = black
inn digri = stout, fat
inn rammi = strong
Víga- = Battle-

well maybe not.
i got that link from a user here in the forum of what he thought to be a viking flag.
i'm not to sure what to think of it...

I read the reference to an "ancient Vicking (sic!) settlement" but a flag adopted in 1938? :p

I'd much rather have the Raven ;)

(Oh - btw, I tried that other raven... It was ugly! Too wide to scale down...)

i know, just read the info on that page, don't know what he was smoking when he mailed to me... :)
i've tried to do a shield based on the other raven earlier, but it didn't look right...
the raven shield you got looks great, keep that one! :)
btw, did you manage to do a raven flag as well?

@Capt. K:
I will try to set up new files for Monarchs, Leaders, and Random leader names (just so that we doesn't do anything double...).

How about events? I can imagine a few ideas:

* First contact with "skraelings" (Lenape, Hurons, Iroquis)
- peaceful co-existence?
- aggresive policy of conquer?

* Missionaries?
- Send missionaries to the skraelings
- Do not send
-> response from indians... convert? become pissed and attack?

* Contact with Europeans?

* Maybe some powerstruggles?
