The thorn? I use Textpad for coding and it has a nice list of all ANSI characters. I haven't tested if those come through ok in EU though...

I don't think they should start out with contact with Europe. But they will have explorers, so we know that eventually contact will be established anyway.
I was thinking of some events regarding their policy towards Europe... We could use the new relation triggers and stuff :D

And by the way, did you look at the province.csv changes I made? What do you think? any further suggestions?
Looks good so far. I have been looking around to find some place names we can use. In Greenlander saga they mention that Leif Eriksson buils several houses, and called the place "Leifsbudir". In the Saga of Erik the Red they mention settlements at "Straumsfjörð" and "Hóp" - I guess we can use that.

If we start in 1419 I guess they would have to adapt to newer tech ;) The Greenlanders at this time had more modern ships than the longboat. The last known contact with America we know of is the 1347 mention of a timber-ship going from Markland to Greenland taken by storm arriving in Iceland...

Battle-axes would be cool, though :D
 
Vinland's Religion

Do we really want another Protestant Scandinavian country? Why not set them to "Pagan", "Hindu" -- a remotely related religion, or even "Muslim" - Christians were not the only ones proselytising their religion.:)

I would say Hindu would be the best choice. Muslims in the new world isn't quite as plausible. :D

A Hindu Vinland is more realistic than Pagan Vinland as far as the effects are concerned. This would make a distinguishment between their beliefs and those of the natives. And since Hindus are on the other side of the world (in India) there isn't likely to be any contact between the two. If I am not mistake Hindu also has a tiny morale bonus which works here (Valhalla) and the tech research speed is slower, and there is a negative investment in stability. All these factors I think simulate Odinism rather well.

Of course some of their provinces should be Christian starting out, such as the capital. I don't know what the state religion should be at game start. But an event should be made to give the player an option of which religion to adopt.

Battle axes and Longships aren't really that far behind the technology of 1419 Europe. And keep in mind, that rivalry influences military technology. Since the Vinlanders only enemy would be the Skraelings, who don't have any iron working, they wouldn't see much reason to develop new military technology. So they may never have developed Pikes and Halberds. Pikes and Halberds are designed to be used against Cavalry, and since the natives had no horses at this time, they would have had no need to develop them. That's why I say the early soldier sprites would be wrong for Vinland. They wouldn't need those pikes...

And the battle axe weilding warrior would look better anyway. ;)
If only someone knows how to make it.....

Unfortunately we don't have the ability to make new religions. :(
So we must use one of the existing ones, and I think Hindu would be the closest choice....

I had an idea for the alternate line that goes like this. One of the early monarchs can also be a conquistador. And there can be an event, where he goes on an expedition of exploration into the wilderness. He is led by a few Abenaki native guides, which he doesn't realize are leading him into a trap. ;)
A fierce battle then rages in the forest between the Skraelings and the Vinlanders. The Vinlanders eventually end up victorious, but not without suffering heavy casualties (including the young king). The young king fought heroically and so is remembered always through song. Meanwhile, his young widow assumes the throne. As she is in grief, she is enraged with the Skraelings and attempts to get her revenge. But there are those who want to oppose this and keep peaceful trade relations with the natives.

In game terms, this would mean the player would have the option of accepting the young queen and keep the old Eriksson dynasty alive, or they can choose to support those who advocate a republic rather than a Monarchy. This would be where the lines branch off..... I would suggest to keep things equal that the Eriksson dynasty monarchs have on average, higher military ratings. whereas the republic monarchs would have higher administration ratings on average. Going with the Erikssons would mean war with the natives, this would finally give an excuse to use the command that raises the aggressiveness of natives. To go with the Republic should mean that the natives aggressiveness is lowered, and of course other effects...

What do you think?

For religion, how about three choices: the old beliefs (Hinduism), the current (Catholicism), or the new (Paganism) thru an event?

Also, I agree that the Vinlanders would not have needed to develop pikes and whatnot. Their tech level should be muslim, or even pagan, to prevent them from developing too quickly (possibly with an event to change it once contact w/ Europeans is established?).
