What about "Arabia Universalis"..

I think you should consider taking advantage of two facts:

1: Spain's tag has a CB against all non-christians
2: All protestants have a "base" religion of catholic

With this in mind, the religions should really be:

Catholic: Moslem
Protestant: Shi'ite
Reformed: Kharjite
Orthodox: Jewish
Sunni: Catholic (the schism hadn't really taken hold, and the big conflict was with the monophysites)
Shi'ite: Apostolic (the monophysites)
Pagan: Shamanism (beast cults, totem worship, shamanic magic, etc)
Hindu: Hindu-Buddhist (Buddhism was still under the hindu umbrella of religious beliefs, this would not change until later)
Buddhist: Polytheism (religions with god pantheons)
Confucian: Zoroastrian (so they can force-convert other vedic religions)
Counter-Reformed: Ultra Orthadox Sunni

...and give the Caliphate the SPA tag.

This was the Caliphate will have a CB against all non-muslims, and if they go ultra-orthadox CBs against non-sunni moslems. Also we can distinguish between shamanism and paganism.

What are Karjite? Were they different from the Shi'ites? Or a subgroup like the Reformed of the Protestants? I remember someone writing in this Thread that Shi'a and Sunni were sufficent in the game because all the others were sub groups of these two.

Great idea, but still sad that we can't make the Eastern and Western church different. That would add some spice to the inter-european relations. But since the scenario is called "Arabia Universalis" I can live with that. Islamic religions have priority.

By the way, is the HAB tag still automatically HRE Emperor in 1.09? If yes we could also make HAB the Caliphate and rename the title Emperor to Caliph. Then we just relocate the HRE area to cover the area of the Caliphate.
 
HAB and SPA both have bonuses to being Emperor, so HAB should be a rival to the caliphate. We want the Caliphate to be SPA because of SPA's hardcoded permanent CB against everyone who isn't Christian (in this case, Moslem)

Kharjites split off from Shi'ites for a lot of the same reasons that Reformed Christians split off from the Protestants. The Shi'ites promised to return to a more "pure" form of Islam, but in the opinion of the Kharjites, failed to deliver, so they killed Ali and split off to form their own opposition to the Sunni caliphs. This is mainly because Ali had grown concerned with the fact that he was harming Islamic expansion by his war with the Ummayads, so he began to negotiate with them to settle their differences. The Kharjites refused to negotiate.

The Kharjites later became known as the Ibadites, and they still exist in Oman and central Algeria. In fact they really should have been in EU2, but no matter.

At this point, the schism was more of a dispute between the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Bishop of Rome. They still considered themselves to be one religion however, unlike the Monophysites who they considered to be heretics.
 
Nearly everything east of Anatolia should be Apostolic: Armenian Anatolia (IE everything east of Angora) Cilicia, Syria, non-Jewish Palestine and Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia. Only Georgia later accepted the council of Chalcedon, so they would be Catholic.

We should include the Nestorians in the Apostolic category, since even though they aren't quite the same it's kind of like the way Shi'ite was lumped together with Ibadite in EU2. They were quite active in Iran and along the steppes, and several turkic confederacies converted in this era, like the Qara Khitai.

Yes. Everything east of Angora (Ankyra) was Monophysite. But about Jews in Palestine. As far as I know there were no Jewish majorities in the Levant at that time. The Jews were already in the Diaspora (since 70 AD or so). So everything down there should be Apostolic.
Coming to the Pope - Patriarch relation. I wanted them to be seperate because it would be much better to simulate the struggle between the Pope and the Patriarch over religious domination in the Balkans/Eastern Europe (for example conversion of the Bulgars or Kyrillos in Moravia). The differences created a lot of tension. The Schism in the 9th century was just the official seperation. Inofficially the seperation already took place much earlier. But as I already said I'm willing to keep them together because the scenario is called Arabia Universalis and it's main focus is Arabia and not the Pope - Patriarch relation. ;)

Why did you seperate Polytheism and Shamanism? For Christians and Muslims there was no big difference in those two. They were heathens. No religion of the book.
 
However Pagans and Hindus DID see a difference. A pagan from scandinavia should not consider a shamanist mongol to share the same religion as him.

Nice, Shia - Khwarij (spelling mistake in arabic, then again, nobody would notice) and Sunnah.Very nice indeed.

Though I dont see a point in adding the Khwarij , they were simply trouble makers, burning and looting, and didnt get much of a following, as they died out later on.Perhaps events should reflect them "Khawarij are crossing the countryside!"

Why not leave the BYZ tag for the Roman Empire? Everyone is used to it. And KAZ I had the idea using for Khazaria. :eek:o

Can you post the country names in the text.csv again please?

I'm wondering what you used the RAG, DAM and VOL tags for. ;)

Has HoChiMinh ever reported any progress? IS he doing a map? If not we could use MKJ's Dark Ages map (he said he will post some screens in the middle of january) which covers Europe, Asia and northern Africa, so all we need. :D
