Boom.

Finally picked up Red 2 on Thermal at 155 million km.

That's well inside his missile range, of course, and we are counting on our cloaking device to prevent him from locking onto us.

sc-2761.jpg

Now we'll close in a little more and then shadow him.

Our Intel ships shadow the enemy Red 2 formation, still heading toward planet Harmony.

Possibly annoyed by the shadowing Intel ships.

Or possibly just swanning around.

... and that's GOOD. It means less missiles for Red 2, and it also means that he WILL shoot at nearby commercial engined ships as he goes by.

Civilian engines yes. Civilian shipping lines -- no. So far at least.

As expected.

Salvo of 7 missiles incoming.

That's what... 592 missiles in total?

585 + 7?

592 indeed.

Every wrecked ship in the galaxy gets a unique identifier.
Yeah, but I checked rhe previous wrecks in the earlier screenshots, and the modron ones didn't seem to have a number.
So I ruled out it could be it was the 500th wreck since game start.

The Modron wreck numbers are not displayed, no.

But all wrecks - ours and theirs - have sequential numbers.

They just aren't shown on the map.

Our Intel ships are within Red 2's missile range.

Hopefully their cloaking device prevents a fire control lock.

I'm hoping to close in with the cloaked Intel ships to about 130 million km.

That will allow us to directly ping them with our AWACS RADAR... and hopefully will persuade them to chase us.

I haven't yet given up hope of pulling the jump point sucker-play... sitting right on the jump point and jumping out just as enemy missiles approach.

Picked up the three Gards on Thermal at 177 million km.

My sensor sensitivity estimate (posted above) was 176 million km for a 4,000 Thermal target.

Cross and Middleton are two of our civvie shipping companies.

And we don't build Freighters (or anything else) that large.

We've maneuvered them into AWACS range, and we count 15 enemy ships.

7 x Lot-et-Garonne missile cruisers
3 x Gard AMM-PD vessels
3 x Vosges Laser PD vessels
1 x Sarthe Heavy Laser Gunship
1 x Deux-Sevres missile boat.

Tactical, Harmony star system.

The current action is taking place near the top left corner, along the row of waypoints.

Enemy invasion fleet at bottom center. It only moves at 2,800 kps so we have lots of time to deal with that before it becomes an actual threat.

The two small enemy detachments near the center of the map... one group of three ships, the other a single damaged ship... are basically out of ammo.

So once they are out of 200 million mile missiles, they are going to be fairly straightforward for the gunships.

Having followed Red 2 down the chain of waypoints, we are now leading them back up the same chain of waypoints, toward the jump point ambush.

Exactly.

Despite their clear technological advantage, our opponents strike me as a bit of a one-trick pony.

Admittedly, it's quite a trick.

Size-12 strength-18 missiles that travel at 78,000 kps and reach out over 200 million km. One missile hit killed every Pop on Harmony.

... but once you get past that, there's only the one Sarthe to deal with.

The Gunships have arrived. This is usually bad news for somebody.

The Gunships are half a billion km from Red 2.

They don't intend to engage... they just want to kite him over to the ambush site.

Well... HOPEFULLY we can keep their interest and lead them into the jump point ambush.

I'll get back into it later.
