CTD's:

Well got my first CTD with 1.01. Will see if it's a consistent one or not. WIll know soon. I've had consistent CTD's with 1.0 (meaning it owuld always happen at a certain point), but 1.01 seemd to fix that.

I really hate these, they are so without warning!

Thank you MrT!
If you need more savegames, I am willing to send them as i said earlier.
I have a 2,5mb WinRAR file of a game that repeaditly crash on loading.
I myself do not have any experience in analyzing these games.

Well, you can never have too many savegames with CTDs. The more the betas/devs can analyze, the better.

Dont know how to send large files of my save game even though its only around 9 MB, I can tell you what nation i play most though were it dose it.

I mostly play Brandenburg, I can correctly atm load my saved game as Prussia, but that remains to be seen for how long

Okay...I still haven't tracked down the cause but we are kicking around a few ideas as to possible cause in beta at the moment and will see if we can conscript someone to run a debug tomorrow. The debug process is incredibly processor intensive in ths game, so what we are likely to need are 5 or 6 sample games that either crash on load (ie you never make it into the game) or will *definitely* crash within a month of play. I have a few such saves, but I could use a couple more just to be thorough.

If you think you have such a save, I'd be willing to take it. To be eligible it must meet *all* of the follwing criteria:
  1. It must be a game being played in its entirety (so far) under 1.01.
  2. It must be played on a vanilla install. If you've made even a single alteration to the game files (including config txt and csv files) or to the save file then I don't want it (it could be counter-productive). Do not bother asking me if I want your crashed save if you've been playing muslims...
  3. You must be able to zip it (we prefer rar files due to better and more reliable packing).
  4. You must be willing to give me your system specs exactly. Ideally this would be a dump of the dx diag (run dxdiag.exe from the command prompt and then click the "save information" button). (Note to those who have sent me their files already: I won't need this from you since I have already confirmed the crash on my system and will give that information to Johan when I pass is along).
If you meet these criteria, PM me. I will respond with an email address for you to send it to. When I think I have enough samples, I'll post back here to let you know.

Fear not, folks. We'll track this sucker down and squish it.

I didn't read every post in this thread so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned...

In my case the CTD happens during a save (either autosave or manual save). Then when I reload the game the save that preceded the CTD crashes at the initializing phase. If I go back and reload an earlier save it works until the next save then CTD.

EF1, I am very sorry about your experience (and everyone else, too). I have also had a real drag playing my current game, and have had to go to prior saves and replay long periods to avoid a terminal CtD a few times. I have not expiernced a CtD loading a save file as has been expressed in this thread, though.

No matter...

But, I have a lot of options in trying to get around problems by using my Autosave tool - the download is in the first page of this thread. I strongly recommend that anyone that has repeated problems use my tool - it gives you a better chance at recovering from a problem than relying on the autosave and oldautosave.

I know, this is no fix, but it is better than nothing. Btw, I have great confidence that Paradox will fix this problem - they have a long history of ruthlessly tracking down these kind of errors.
I'm sorry to say it, but the problem doesn't only occur with autosaves, but with manually saved games, too (at least for me), so your tool probably won't help me. But I agree with you that it will be fixed, I only hope that it will be soon...
All my tool does is give more save files to choose from once you run into the problem. So, it is hit and miss. But, if you autosave it might work for you - as it did for me (twice, now :().

OK, there are now some moderators for this forum, and we will provide more structure, and we will want less chatter.

There's a lot of chat in this thread that is not desired. No need to criticize or defend the beta testers or Paradox, for example. The point is to contribute to finding the bug. Note, I am guilty of chatting here, myself...

There are temporary rules now posted in the stickies at the top of the forum. These will likely be refined very soon. Please limit your posting to contributing to identifying and clarifying a bug, and to providing a work-around. Btw, I believe MrT may have found a trend, so we maybe getting someplace on this (I don't recall him posting it here, yet).

Similar problem here - reloading either autosave or old autosave results in a CTD. I was playing as the King of England in the 1066 scenario (version 1.01) and had just been made papal controller for the second time (possibly a bug as both times it was related to Odo becoming pope I think, but the first time Anselem carried on). Becoming papal controller for the second time removed the papal controller icon (and menu options) but I was still listed as controller on Odo's screen.

I have the autosave from this, but I'm not sure what the best way to submit it is?

I have an error very similar to this one re: an announcement that Robert, King of England is the papal controller but no icons on the main screen. On Robert's personal screen, the cross icon is there.
This error came up after a CTD I had: I don't know if that is related or not, but this has happened twice now. I have a savegame that so far replicates this bug. I have a vanilla install, etc. Do the mods want this save game?

Thanks.

Scratch the save game. It now loads the Papal controller icon fine. Still CTDs a bit later, though.

I've had at least another half dozen save files offered to me which I expect I'll receive in the course of the next day so I should have a good enough sample now to be useful to Johan for debug purposes. I won't yet say what I'm thinking I see as a trend since I could be waaaaaay off base. Let me also reasure everyone that every effort is being made to generate a fix for this is rapidly as possible.

Thats good news, ive alread sent you mine, e-mail address is patrick.wegerle@..... the rest you can see just to let you know that thats me lol.

Just incase you thaught it was an astranged eprson sending you some thing and you deleted it.

I dont mind the CTD'S all to much but far to frequant lol as for not being able to load saved games its annoying hehe, thoughnI cna play my Prussia game atm, hope I cna still carry on playing it lol.

I’ve experienced this too. My impression is the CTDs are event related.

I’ve been able to cut down CTD frequency by:

1. Disabling background applications, including web pages that tend to grab focus or have video, such as Flash ads. Virus checkers must be closed.

2. Turning off autosave. Autosaves are often written while the game isn’t paused--bad.

3. Disabling the introductory video. I’ve had problems with games that use Bink video. Just rename the AVI folder.

4. Pausing the game when creating manual saves. Saves created this way have never failed to load properly.

5. Keeping game speed lower than maximum.

6. Increasing virtual memory.

This is happening with my current save game as Emperor of Byzantium, but I was always Emperor. Only thing is that I just inherited from my father who bore the same name. :(

I can confirm items 1,2,4 and 6. I fooled around with a few counts and saved and reloaded last night without issue (didnt progress the game more then 50 years though). I didnt have any issues with reloading.

Status update...

Progress is being made!

It is felt that the cause of this problem has now been identified and a solution is being actively sought.

Wow that is what I call quick progress MrT well done Paradox, hope it is the actuly problem what ever it is.

Be nice to know whats causing the problem, but so long it gets resolved quickly in a emergancy patch id be happy

Any chance you can tell us what you guys think the problem is Mr. T?

Especially if the problem is something that we can easily fix in the savefile!

It'd be great if those other games weren't permanently lost. :(

Sorry, no. NDA...

I fear that the saves may not be recoverable, but that remains to be seen. Most importantly we need the main fix so it doesn't happen again, and then we need to make sure that what's been fixed really was the source of the problem and that the fix istelf doesn't break something else. Can't give you an ETA yet, but we're doing our damnedest to do and do it right.

Before you ask:

ETA = Estimated Time of Arrival

Nothing to do between MrT and a terrorist organisation... :eek:o
