Rome 2 in space.

"Wage war against barbarians and fight for power in the senate. Defeat your enemies and become emperor. Make all other nations kneel before the might of Rome..................................................................................................IN SPACE!"

If there were portraits I hope they will be more like CK2 than this, I really don't like the "cartoonish" effect

This has a classic strategy look, though. CK2's portraits, while an admirable effort for the number of physical traits and combinations they have to represent, are still chintzy CGI. This art looks handcrafted.

EDIT: this is personal opinion of course

Johan had a plan:
When posting hints/teasers, such as the ones for Augustus right now, how do you plan and compose them? Do you have one big pool of hints and teasers and then pick some of them at random? Or do you have a set script of hints/teasers to be posted, with a specific order? Or do you pick teasers/hints out of a pool, depending on where speculation is going? How do you determine who posts the teasers and hints? Who composes them, can everyone involved in the project write one, or is it just leads/studio management/PR and marketing?
I make them, and I have a plan that is followed from day 1.

I find it unlikely that it would be Star Wars as some people on the reddit said/asked for.

My left eyebrow was arching ever higher with each "he's obviously a slave" comment, then I saw this ...

... and just had to laugh. It's so stupid you can't even be angry ...
It's not racism to consider the slave option when a game set in the slave trade era is on the table. Seriously.

I think that the picture is from a loading screen, not a character portrait. May be anything, but the fact that the mouth is cut-off does point towards a space game. Alternatively, it may be fantasy.

By the way, those who are bothered about the portrait's effects like gloss (which some think is 'cartoonish'), don't worry. You actually haven't seen how CK2 portraits looked like when it was announced, and later on in the dev diaries before release.

And it might not be a character portrait at all, it could be from anything.

Well deserved holidays! But don't make the mistake to drink non-bavarian beer at gamescom this week ;)

Edit: looks like an egyptian setting. The man could be nubian...or maybe it is just a
grand strategy game from egypt till today...

I'm feeling resigned to the fact that this is probably a space game now - I just can't see how all the hints could fit if it's a game based in antiquity (that said some are a bit of a stretch for a space game too). Hints #6 and #3 not working together made me question the theories I put together, and then hint #7 and the Coriolis/Stellaris trademarks really confirmed (at least in my mind) that Augustus is most likely a game set in the future. Honestly the first thing I thought when seeing today's screenshot was 'It's a space game' - I can see where the people who think it's a Roman or Carthaginian guy are coming from but I think the picture is just deliberately vague so that it's open to interpretation. There's nothing stopping alien planets from having a blue sky, and stone (or fake stone) could still be used to decorate buildings. If nothing else the scan lines look intentional, perhaps suggesting it's meant to be some kind of holographic projection type thing, and I'm pretty confident they didn't have those in Ancient Rome.

I can't deny that I find it all a little disappointing as a sci-fi game was really the last thing I wanted Augustus to be. I don't think I've ever played a futuristic strategy game that has really captured my interest - I just can't seem to get immersed in the setting. That said, I still hope the franchise will be a huge success for Paradox and that Augustus will satisfy everyone who was hoping for a space game. I might possibly even give it a shot one day - we'll see. I guess there's still some hope for an Old World Antiquity game (I honestly can't see EU: Rome II ever being a thing) and Victoria 3 coming out before CK3 and EU5 anyway...

My guess is they aim for a style that fits a setting they plan to use. Or they just want to give it a retro style...

Well...considering a lot of 'space' TV shows are retro...
