You get PHD in haircuts when you are unable to get a PHD in clothing, which is not shown anyway. That's why.

I hope it is like Dune, Foundation, Battletech, Gundam, or legend of galactic heroes. Human focused retro sci-fi with political intrigue.

"Wage war against barbarians and fight for power in the senate. Defeat your enemies and become emperor. Make all other nations kneel before the might of Rome..................................................................................................IN SPACE!"

"This will be your destiny, Roman, to rule the worlduniverse with your power. These will be your arts: to establish peace, to spare the humbled, and to conquer the proud."

- Virgil
2274 Before First Roman Colony In Space

I can already imagine them doing the presentation of the game:

"Hi guys and girls, welcome to the presentation of our new game!"

*hype intensifies*

"It is called.... ROME!"

*screaming and rejoicing*

*1 minute later, after there is calm again*

"Just a joke. The real game is Candy Crusher, exlusive on WindowsPhone."

This is Paradox's biggest issue with a sci fi game. They need to have a interesting, immersive lore which is a hard thing to do.Even the might of Firaxis could not do it with Beyond Earth.

Emperor of the fading suns,AlphaCentauri are the only great sci fi strategy game theme's that come to mind.

Paradox have just used history as the platform.Which is very easy.

I'm reading a lot about people being disappointed with the (most probable) setting: 'space'.
But please consider the Paradox staff reading this, thinking "What have we done?!". Think of all those tears, streaming down the young and eager faces of developers who have put their heart into making this piece of art. Imagine the sad face Johan makes, when reading your comments. Do you really want a sad Johan?

I say: This is very exciting and though it's not what I hoped it to be (which would be a modern 2000 setting), I will still look very much forward to it. So far I haven't played a PDS game which wasn't fun and I'm sure this one will be awesome as well.
I'm so excited about the direction they'll choose. I think concentrating on politics and technology is a great choice (especially politics, as this is where PDS-games shine).

Gooooo Paradox!

My guess is they aim for a style that fits a setting they plan to use. Or they just want to give it a retro style...
That was my point FFS. It's obviously based in the future so it's dumb that the "monitor effect" makes it look like an 80s monitor. That doesn't make any sense for something set in the future.

It will be sooo awkward.
Like last year when Runemaster was revealed...silence.
I'm horrified already.
Where's the phone number for my shrink ?...*searching*

Retro Style ! Vintage !
Doesn't have to be realistic.

Maybe roman space martians simply think that 80s screens look cool.
