One of the problems I have with all Paradox games is the tendency to hide the effects of major events. And, no, putting it in the change log doesn't count, not when the change log is huge. That's what I think people are asking for, some sort of notification that tells them that they only have a limited amount of time to redploy before peace and possible forced demob of their army.

this may sound stupid, but oh well, how do I take screenshots and where do I find them in my HOI files?

Thanks.

I told earlier about my failed campaigns against the Central Powers, this time I came back with a vengence. Here is Round two of Central Powers vs. Russia.
Difficulty - Hard
Aggresiveness - Furious
WarPlan.jpg

Operation Hammerfall, as shown above, was put forth by Generals Brusilov and Yudenitch. After being review by the Grand Duke, who was most pleased with it, the plan was forwarded to The Czar. The Czar, impressed agreed and by January 1914 the plan was being put into affect.

The plan has two phases, the first is shown in green. The first phase is a major attack through Torun towards Elbing in roder to hack off East Prussia and the 15-20 German divisions stationed there. In order to keep the assualt secret, Brusilov will amass 33 divisions in Ostroleka behind Russian lines behind only 6 Russian divisions in Torun, this force will be called Army Group Prussia.

After Brusilov's army had engaged the Germans at Elbing Yudenitch's massive Army Group North would collaspe on Memel and Konigsburg, and eliminate all German troops there. Phase one, expected to take two weeks would elimiate 20 divisions from the German Order of Battle and shorten the Russian line considerbly, and also anchor it behind the Wisla River.

At the same time to the south the Grand Duke's Army Group South would take Lwow and Munhacs in order to shorten the line and provide a launch pad for phase two.

General Alexseev's Center Army Group will hold the Wisla River, surrendering Western Poland, in order to draw the Germans into the Phase 2 - The Hammerfall.

Yudenitch's Army Group North, renamed Army Group Ukraine will combine with the Grand Duke and assualt north, using the Wisla river to cover their northern flank and the Carpathian moutains, their southern flank. They will advance through Silesia into the heart of German, and threaten to take Berlin, the Germans will begin to fall back to counter this, when Alexseev's Army Group (heavily re-enforced by 3 Siberian corps and 4 corps from Brusilov) will launch an attack on Radom while Yudenitch will attack Krakow. Both Armies will begin pushing the Germans out of Poland. Hopefully reaching the Oder before the winter. Given a 3 month time period of combat, the Grand Duke knew the operation must go smoothly. Finally war came.

Phase 1 began on August 2nd, Lwow was taken easily and Brusilov's 35 odd divisions facing Crown Prince Rupprecht's 8 Bavarian divisions, later re-enforced by 3 more German divisions. Despite German bravery, Brusilov easily won, with light losses and the Germans began retreating into Konigsburg. Yudenitch's attack was now fully progressing, Memel was taken easily. Yudenitch's main force attacking Konigsburg ran into stiff resistance and the attack bogged down, to help 15 Russian divisions arrived from the north and victory was sealed.

Phase_2_Start.jpg

The Germans were in shock, Landwehr began filling in around Danzig in order to cover the line, but the Germans were decieved, as by rail Yudenitch shipped 25 divisions south. Grand Duke's attack got underway in earnest.

Nikolai's attack blasted through 12 Austrian divisions, routing them and pressing for Silesia, they arrived at Dresden after 10 days, with no major German units in sight, at Dresden though, things began to get rough. 3 major German counter-attacks pounded Nikolai's weary troops and the Austrians attacked Munkacs and Lwow, but the Russians held. One German attack was carried out by General von Worysch.
Nikolai_Defend.jpg

With Nikolai being pressed hard and with 2 Siberian Corps finally ready for combat, Alexseev and Yudenitch hurled themselves over the Wisla river at the German defenders, who were moving west to defend Berlin. Yudenitch easily took Krakow, but Radom was a different story.
Phase_2_Hammerfall.jpg

At Radom, Alexseev's initial 21 divisions faced off against 9 Germans, but the river and German resistance proved to bog down the attack. Brusilov was detached personally with 8 divisions from Elbing to re-enforce the assualt but 10 German divisions trickled into Radom. Brusilov's attack gained new purpose now, instead of taking Radom his job was to keep German forces in Poland tied up while Yudenich moved form Krakow on to Czest in Poland. The goal being to encircle the Germans at Radom from Czest.
Yudenich_Attack.jpg

German resistance was stiff, Czest was easily one but a combined Teuton-Magyar assualt inflicted many losse son Yudenich and his forces. The attack at Lodz bogged down and the Germans attacks at Krakow intensified, as well Brusilov pulled back his forces to prevent losses from getting out of hand. The Hammerfall was failed, but there was still one final fight in early November before the Russian Command suspended offensive actions.
Consolidation.jpg

With winter coming and the Germans most likely to launch spring offensives, The Grand Duke decided to extricate himself from his exposed position at Dresden and move into Silesia, troops in Breslau would attack with men of Yudenich from Czest on Oppeln to widen and consolidate the Russian bulge. This operation was total successfull. The Austrians launched a final desperate offensive at Cieszyn, and managed to take it easily be the light Russian garrison. The Grand Duke easily took the province back from the Austrians and offensive operations were halted, the armies recooped and new Moutain-Infantry Corps were being formed in Ukraine for the Spring offensive against Hungary.
Final.jpg

The Russian High Command, after reviewing Operation Hammerfall called it a great success, the destruction of 20 German divisions in Prussia, the severe retardation of the German Western Offensive and the placing of the Central Powers in a weak position, Austria having lost no major natural boundaries for the rich Hungarian plain and Germany in a very exposed position in Poland.

Generals Brusilov, Yudenich and Alexseev were promoted to full Field Marshals as a reward.

Ahh very good but you should have promoted them even before the battle started......

Anyway I found some serious problems with the 1915 war. If Austria does nothing, it leaves the Central Powers, leaving Germany and Italy.

Then in May 1915 the Bulgarians, Austrians and Turks go to war with Greece, Romania, Serbia, and Russia.

Then the Italians get their second leave the central powers event - default is don't let Germany down and they stay. Then the Austrians get the "Bribe to Italy" event, and most of the time Italy then enters into alliance with France. Then Austria and Turkey ally with Germany, and Russia allies with France. But because Italy is allied to France, and Italy is also allied to Germany........everyone is in the alliance. To make matters even worse, Britain unilaterally declared war on Italy and Germany after the bout of Balkan war declaring - this highlights a need for a British WE reducing event in late July 1914 and early May 1915 so they don't declare war immediately, and can only join the war by picking the historical choices or waiting until WE goes back up again. Needless to say the map is an entire mess.

I think the problem can be solved by adding the additional condition:
NOT = { alliance = { country = ITA country = GER } }
in the Austrian bribe to Italy event 3020.

ptan,
I wanted fulladvantage of their skill ability, plus the exsistance of many skillfull low level generals never made me run into command problems, and the fact the Grand Duke was nearby during the main fighting in Poland, I don't think its serious reprimanded my assualt at all. Now I got 2 level 4 Field Marshals (Nikolia, Alexseev) and 2 level 5 field marshals (Yudenitch, Brusilov).

Future promotions during 1915 go to Yanuschkevich and Krylen or some like that, both oustanding generals during the Borodino Offensive into Hungary. I'll be posting a much less picty post about the 1915 Berezina-Borodino Offensives in Poland and Hungay.

I need to save webspace!

Pirate, the reason we do not have Australia and Canada is that, in this time in history, their foreign policy reflected, in fact for all practical purposes were controlled by London. Their militaries were also enteretwined with those of the rest of the Empire.

Perhaps one of the other team members has a handy link to the thread where we discussed this.

Just had to say:

This new version 1.03 is great, you guys are really coming along with this mod.

No problem if u guys decide to do a lil mod that continues up to 1936, then let me know, I'll help with America's small wars.

Seriously tho, you guys are doin a great job

I have a question about experience gaining.
As it is now navy and Army leaders get very fast very large experience whereas air leaders suck (compared to the others). Is it possible to make airleaders get experience, too?

I think the 1920s/1930s era is something best left to another team of modders, as I certainly have no interest in extending the end date of the current mod.

Thanks for the compliment, though :)

Just as in the standard HOI, air leaders gain combat experience as land and naval leaders do.

Guys-

Got 1.03b loaded and have played games as AH and the Ottomans-

Great fun!

Thank you for your work

Finally finished my Russian Campaign, despite bad the begining of the revolution, I managed to crush Germany by the Winter of 1917 and by Summer 1918 Turkey was knocked out.

The Entente has won.

Great game, and a very tough game.

Nice work, you and CORE have breathed new life into this game. Nice work.

Next, I'll try my lot with the French.

im sure this probabaly has been discussed for many times but game starts very late date..i mean you dont have time to build up an army or make an industrilization...maybe game should start at 1912?

They actually thought about this, and a discussion came up a while ago that it should start in 1905, but every one pretty much agreed later that it's current start date is the best.

BTW, I played a game last night as Germany. Rolled over Russia and took care of them first thing (to test Germany's original plan). The French took those Alsaice-Lorraine provinces they were always big about, but I left them alone until the troops in the east could come back home. Then I sent four army corps into Italy as the French were kicking the Italian's butt - I kicked the French out and moved into the southern provinces, swallowing up land after land. The Italians provided the defense, I provided the brute strength.

BTW, those military derigibles are nasty when you first get them. I told a squadron of two to attack one of the fortified French positions, and the French were helpless! I basically left it on repeat and it continued to pound away at the French positions, taking away their manpower. Have to say though it did turn the tide of battle. I took those provinces and pushed into Paris.

As soon as France and Britain were suppressed and the world was at peace, I set about tech whorring. Where am I out? I have MAXED OUT my infantry, industrial, land doctrines, and about five other tech trees. My infantry is stronger than my recently made armor! I invaded Switzerland, Belgium, and Denmark, rolling over them with my uber-soldiers. I then conquered France again (did they think a few French provinces would suffice?), and the only hard part about that was getting my troops to move faster.

I had never seen a maxed out tech tree before. Makes me feel like I can conquer the world...

:) You probably can...

Part of the reason for this, I thnk, is the low starting manpower - which means that you can't spend much on units, so you pour all your ICs into research instead.

Which is why we need to do the tech tree in such a way that to make any progress in one tech field you have to make progress in two others. Also tech needs to cost less IC, but take a whole lot longer to develop (not too much less IC, but perhaps by a 1/3. Also for some techs 2 to 3 times the development time.).
