Let's try to guess all 7.

Mammallian
Reptillian
Insectoid
Furry
Tenticles...

um.....

hmm....

I can't think of any more fetishes.

Will two races with the same phenotype have identical looks?

Like, say, Vulcanians and Romulans?
No. RPS article said there are 100+ racial portraits. So races will still have different appearances even when they're in the same phenotype.

Did they say if you can set the frequency of phenotypes or if similar phenotypes will spawn closer?

Like if I wanted mostly human species in my game to spawn or if I wanted most early contact of other empires to be human-like, with the more alien species showing up later.

I want my Electrical type!

I want a race of Pikachus!

I don't think so. The RPS article said there are 100+ racial portraits. There is no telling whether these are portraits of different species or not.
They look pretty different. 1 is squid/fish, 2 is furry mammal, 3 is weird, 4 is birdy, 5 is token human, 6 is reptilish. Not a lot of overlap.

So it's not 7 major playable powers and an assortment of minor states like I was led to believe? Will there be many tags just each one of them having a phenotype and many sharing the same, like cultures in other PDS games?

Let's look... http://www.stellarisgame.com/the-game

Mammal and Furry monkey people? Confirmed.
Insectoids? Confirmed.
Tentacles? Confirmed.

We only have seen 6 phenotypes on the page... and only reptillians are missing. ;)

The thing is Furry monkey people (looks more like a bat to me) should be mammals

It might be just 3 of the "phenotypes" so 1 and 3 are the same phenotype, as are 2 and 5 and 4 and 6.

im going to quote myself from page 2:
If you look at the picture names you will see that the "phenotypes" are (from left to right):
Molluscoid? (thats what the big picture says but im unsure what it is)
Mammalian
Fungoid
Avian
Human
Reptilian

The scientist in the screenshots we can see http://www.stellarisgame.com/assets/screenshots/screenshot6-4f34ab77279bea5f2e09641090672759.jpg doesnt imho look like one of these archtypes but more like an ant. So insect might be the 7th phenotype.

EDIT: but im glad its phenotypes. So theres a chance i can get to play an interstella moth. I feel like we were "promised" moths in a paradox game way back in the HoI3 DDs :p

The word "race" is really controversial in Sweden isn't it?

I doubt that's it. "Race" is essentially just a human word for subspecies or breed. Generally speaking, we call them "races" if they're branches of humanity, "breeds" if they're branches of domesticated animals, and "subspecies" if they're branches of wild animals.

What Paradox is talking about is something beyond species; more like phylum, probably.

The main question is breeding. In reality, you CANNOT produce a fertile child from two separate species. If you can, then they're not really different species, just different subspecies.

I'm not expecting much out of Paradox, but I hope they reflect this by having both separate races for species that CAN mix, and separate species entirely that CAN'T.

Also, as far as the seven phylum go, I'd like to see one that's leafy and one are two that are completely bizarre, like what TV Tropes would call "Starfish Aliens." I also would like to see major differences in reproduction (if dynastic mechanics are present) and psychology... xenofiction grand strategy.

I don't want Spider People. I don't know as I could stomach looking at the portraits.

So..could there be the possibility..... Of having hybrids between phenotypes....like a squid and a human... Because that is Japanese porn :p

Anyways, I think they could had go with more original ideas instead of the cliché species of most of space 4X games. Aliens doesn't need to be intelligent versions of animals in earth. I hope that future docs add original alien phenotypes that doesn't seem familiar at all

Great.... so it's 7 anthropomorphic phenotypes? I really hoped we'd see more viariety in the seven archetypes than just "7 different types of humanoid bipeds."

Runemaster, man I was sad when that was cancelled :(

Maybe if Stellaris is a big success, they'll revive the project.;)

I believe that when we find the people of Alfheim, Asgard, or Midgard in Stellaris (bet anything they'll be out there somewhere in the galaxy), at least one will be led by a "Runemaster." In the meantime, we must hunt down and exterminate all elves wherever in the galaxy they may be hiding. Exterminate, I say, in the name of Human Supreme.
